    This Is England '86 picks up the story 3 years after the events of the 2006 film, and does not disappoint. Superb acting from the likes of Vicky McClure (Lol) and Joe Gilgun (Woody) provides gritty realism to Shane Meadow's gripping portrait of a grey working class culture under the leadership of Thatcher. Superb acting from the likes of Vicky McClure (Lol) and Joe Gilgun (Woody) provides gritty realism to Shane Meadow's gripping portrait of a grey working class culture under the leadership of Thatcher. The brilliance of Meadow's work to date has been his ability to consistently write character-driven stories - ones in which the audience can't help but feel completely immersed and attached to the director's heartfelt characters. Tackling deep and dark issues such as domestic abuse, rape and infidelity, '86 explores the gradual accumulation of various forms of tension developing within the lovable gang. The series is scattered with plenty of light-hearted and witty moments too, which has always been one of its strong points. On a personal note, I found myself shedding a tear on numerous occasions whilst watching '86 for the first time, and I was subsequently shocked at how fond I had grown of the gang. By the end of the series, they felt like they could easily have been my friends. And that is the brilliance of Shane Meadows.… Expand

    This has recently been shown in the UK on Channel 4, and I can honestly say was one of best pieces of television aired this year. Beautifully shot, and an excellent continuation of Meadows fantastic orignial feature, the story follows on a few years down the line with all the original cast returning (due to Meadows invovlement no doubt), with England's football journey at the World Cup inThis has recently been shown in the UK on Channel 4, and I can honestly say was one of best pieces of television aired this year. Although, to not perhaps deter viewers early on, the first few episodes take a slightly more humourous approach, much bleaker and darker issues are dealt with in the final episodes, reflecting moreso with the tone of the original feature, with Meadows himself directing personally the final episode.
