Why can't I say just say "best TV show ever" rather than having to type out 150 characters to just say "The Wire is the best TV show ever"? And, by the way, did I mention that The Wire is the best TV show ever. (Hope this is 150 characters!). :)

Season 1 and 2 stand the test of time. The rest of the seasons fall short. 12 years out the first 2 seasons rival anything since. If you never saw this then give it a go and you will probably end up finishing it anyway. Not as good as BB but still a mothertrucker.

Seriously..... well written, well cast, well produced, well shot, one of the best things you'll ever see on TV. A mature 'Homicide: Life on Street" for the TV connoisseur. Makes great use of some seriously good British actors (look out for Idris Elba). I could watch this again and again, has some serious depth to it. Couldn't give it a 10 though because Vic Makey wouldn't let me ;-)

As a whole, television shows and their cultural/social impact are often looked down on when compared to poems, novels, or even movies. TV shows are frequently portrayed as base and unimportant, but The Wire takes the assumptions and turns them upside down. The Wire is capable of creating in the viewer a sense of connection and wonder that allows it to transcend the boundaries of being merely a television show. These are not actors and set pieces, these are the real streets of Baltimore and these are real people trying to eke out a living in a situation that they have little control over. Coming from the perspective of a white kid living in the suburbs, The Wire can and will open your eyes as to how the world of crime and drugs truly operates, and it will destroy your preconceived ideas about how the "system" works to combat it. The Wire is less a TV show than it is a tragic epic story of the streets shown in a way that provides a bitingly realistic social commentary on the workings of Baltimore, as well as a commentary on the base instincts and desires of humanity itself. (2) it's stylistically more like a documentary than like a drama. There's no music other than whatever music is playing in the scene. There's no shaky cam or tricky camera work of any kind really, no special effects. It's all just whatever you'd see if you were standing near the events in question. By keeping the medium plain and unobtrusive the viewer is able to better connect with the elaborately woven story.

Season 1 in particular deals with the Barksdale drug operation and a wire tap investigation against them. Later seasons move on to other parts of Baltimore, but past characters fade in and out as appropriate.

Each season has a different synopsis but the story remains the same. The way the politics affects the police force and then the gangsters is at the heart of The Wire, but more importantly its social commentary of the politicians, police and the gangsters is perhaps the most important thing of The Wire.

The daily work of the law enforcement is not always flawless and rightful. From the start of forming a unit that could bring down a multimillionaire drug lord, going through the ups and downs of major a case crime investigation, tapping a wire to understand the network and finally maybe dropping the hammer is very much a long and rocky road. Eventually you will end up spending a whole day watching through a full season hoping to solve just one case.

Or maybe you will create a bond with a character for some reason. A life where drugs can be a way to another state of mind or the fastest shortcut to a large amount of cash these dealers and users have to live by certain rules, learn respect and/or create a special code of honour to survive. Breaking this code or forgetting the ways of the “game” will sooner or later leave you weaved between the ruthless street thugs of Baltimore city or the its punishing police department.

The Wire is a TV drama show about the streets of Baltimore realized through a dozen of deep and genuine characters. Drug dealers, policemen, politicians, newspapermen, teachers and their students and other significant line of people all play an important role. All which always can have an effect on the outcome of a bigger picture. And my time with the series has given me some kind of understanding of what a real “poe-lise” (police) is. It has given me other very intriguing insights too. Enough for me to also understand how these influence each other. Therefore this is the most realistic piece of genius I have ever encountered. Movies and series alike are not even close to the respectful amount of detail put in to this story and its single events, character trademark and influence, story continuance and veracity and individual career progress. So if you are looking for a “cops and robbers” drama series masterpiece you can stop looking now because this is it. 10/10.

It's violently candid depiction of the low-income neighborhoods in Baltimore, from their mobsters running organized crime, to their corrupt systems of politics, media and education, are extremely gritty and equally brilliant. The writing keeps you guessing throughout all four seasons and the cast is exemplary, growing more cohesive through every episode. A good amount of the cast are either ex-drug dealers or ex-cops from Baltimore which gives the series an undeniably authentic element that truly sets the wire in a league apart from other television programs. The first season focuses on the projects and a war against drugs, who apparently nobody but Daniels' squad cares about. I won't spoil it or anything, but by the end you're so exhausted from the intensity and the ending is so deliberately unsatisfying (in a good way), but the show doesn't care, what it cares about is about showing things realistically, and of course, we all know that is succeeds. The Wire is dense storytelling at its finest. Expand

The Wire has to be one of the most realistic shows I have seen in television. I believe people rather avoid this one, due to its graphic portrayal of violence in the streets, the school system, and the corruption in politics. But you can't help it, when the dialogue is top notch! Smart scripting and acting make the show as real as you see it on the streets or hear it in the news every day. I cannot go on any further writing this review. It really is unfair, as I cannot say much to make homage to an amazing series. It is depressing at times, but very much a rewarding experience to follow through from start to end. Expand

This first season focuses on the efforts of the Baltimore Police Force to take down known drugs kingpin Avon Barksdale. Showing the story from both sides is the shows true masterstroke and takes the show above your run of the mill TV cop procedural. As in real life this is not just a simple case of good Vs bad, we soon learn that the police and politicians can be just as corrupt as any criminal and that those involved in the drug trade often have no other option. Of course any show of this complexity is going to take its time to truly get going, I myself wasn't really hooked until at least midway through the 12 episodes on offer here, but give it time and you will be rewarded with five seasons of groundbreaking television.

    Should you watch it?
The great thing about The Wire is....well, everything. The scope of the show is immense, the characters range from judges, DAs, police chiefs and detectives on one side to those encompassing the whole structure of Anton Barksdale's gang, from right hand men and enforcers to low level dealers. Each is involved in the story as it plays out slowly piece by piece. The line between good and bad is blurred at best, the police force is riddled with incompetence and those only concerned with self-preservation while the dealers are a well-organised mixture of cold-blooded killers and morally conflicted teens who know no other way of life. Not to mention Omar (Michael K. Williams), the gay stick-up man who terrorises local drug stash houses. Who's listening?
The Wire is the ultimate definition of a slow-burner but with hour long episodes the plot begins to unravel soon enough and rewards are plenty for those patient during the initial episodes. Fans of David Simon's other works like Treme will have no problem adapting to the pace.

Did I mention that the acting, script and music are also top notch? Best line..."If you come at the king, you best not miss".

I am a huge fan of both The Soprano's and The Shield, and the first season of The Wire comes very close if not better than the best moments of these two. It deserves all the credit it receives and more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TV's biggest crime? The Wire not getting the recognition it deserves. This HBO series requires patience but if you're the type of person who can manage multiple threads without getting lost, The Wire would have instantaneously hooked you. This procedural drama does dip into the conventional a bit too much, but I absolutely love the themes present present throughout, at least, the first Season.

Perhaps the most immediately notable aspect of The Wire is the amazing sense of realism it achieves. The very first scene of the very first episode ("The Target") had me thinking that this is a cheap show, lacking the style or grace of something like Breaking Bad, a show that manages to be realistic and not plain. The more I watched of The Wire, the more I found the realistic style contributed to the show's quality. It feels like you're actually on the streets or hunting drug-pushers in a basement full of low-quality technology. There's no fancy lighting or panning camera angles. I felt apart of the experience, in a way, rather than watching from the sidelines. This is something that no show I've watched has ever accomplished.

The actors brilliantly add to the experience. They use language that is full of profanity, but it's how a lot of people speak even today. Barksdale's crew speak exactly how I'd imagine, and the cops aren't that much different. This superficial link is just one of the many parallels The Wire likes to draw between criminals and members of law enforcement.

In "The Hunt" lead McNulty (Dominic West), addresses these issues head on: "Everybody stays friends. Everybody gets paid. And everybody's got a f*cking future." McNulty is our moral compass while everybody else remains, at the very least, morally grey. Not everyone in law enforcement is dirty, but you see most of them make questionable calls from time to time. The point is: can we really trust the politicians, attorneys, and police that serve to protect us?

One of the biggest points has to do with masculinity and pride. If you take a shot at Barksdale, you should expect them to hit you even harder. Omar, the fantastic character that rips the crime syndicate on more than one occasion, pays the price with the loss of his boyfriend. We also realize that the police aren't all that different. Bodie only hit a cop once. However, the task force retaliates by seeking his head. Not only do they continuously beat him, but Hauk and Carver want more blood spilt after. And, of course, the 'dope on the table' retaliation to Greggs' injuries. And not to mention the whole beat down of Bird after his verbal assaults. In fact, one could make the argument that the Baltimore Police are even worse than Barksdale's crew.

People aren't joking around when they say The Wire is tough to follow. There are lots of continuous themes and plotting to think about, and the large cast is multi-layered, and superbly acted. In fact, it's hard to single anyone out as the best. The characterization is extremely different than, say, Lost where you feel a personal connection to all the survivors. Instead, you'd probably pick and choose only a few as your favourites.

Aside from McNulty, the show often focuses on D'Angelo Barksdale (Larry Gilliard, Jr.). I've felt for him throughout the Season, and I can't help but ultimately respect his decision to protect his family. After it dawned on him the lives he has destroyed with his actions early, his emotional journey was spectacular. It's no coincidence that he befriend Wallace, who wasn't far enough along life to make the same mistakes as he did until the call he made to put the hit on Omar's boyfriend (ah, how meticulous this show's storytelling is).

I definitely like McNulty but some of the threads surrounding him were the series' most generic aspects. For one thing, he's another detective with relationship issues. And, of course he has a boss with bug up his ass. On the other hand, despite getting his kids in danger, McNulty is a moral breath of fresh air from all the others who only seem to care about money and power.

If I weren't running out of space, I would talk more about the equally amazingly deep Greggs (Sonja Sohn), Daniels (Lance Reddick), Bubbles (Andre Royo), and Omar (Michael K. Williams).

Perhaps I'm watching the wrong show, but I was hoping for more of a bang in the Season finale. All the build up for shutting down Avon Barksdale was paid off in an anticlimactic way. It's hard to say that "Sentencing", wasn't great however, since the pieces are being set up nicely for the next Season. I'd just prefer it if the pieces that were knocked down went out in a more spectacular fashion.

Nevertheless, the first Season of The Wire plays out in a brilliant, thorough way. If the next 4 Seasons are even half as good, I wouldn't be disappointed.

However to make up for it are twists that you never really expect. It may take awhile to get into but it is very much so worth it. It's loose and rambling; its dramatic climaxes don't coincide neatly with the conclusion of any given episode. Its dialogue, overseen by creator David Simon ... is so good it often sounds improvised. One criticism of the show I've read is that it's repetitive (in showing the slow process of how the police bring down bad guys). But what those critics don't get is that those qualities are exactly what make 'The Wire' the funkiest cop show on TV.
