John and Mary were brought together by a Cupid's arrow. From there we could have followed their courtship and marriage, meeting new characters along the way, up until Mary dies and John finds out about the supernatural. We could have been introduced to the younger versions of the characters we knew on the show, such as Pastor Jim, Caleb, Ellen and her husband, Missouri, a younger Bobby and of course kid Sam and Dean. Following canon would have been far more engaging than the ridiculous, confusing, bland and boring show that is The Winchesters.

I can't quite understand why Jensen would have signed off on such an inferior show compared to the awesome Supernatural. The casting was bad, the story-lines unengaging and the writing worse than what many fanfiction stories contain. A failure on all front, imo.

I don't know why they made it into a teen show. 2 why they changed the storyline. WE all knew why John started hunting.. to avenge his wife s death from yellow eyes. But now he has daddy issues? Why is his character so clueless and soft. John was a serious intimidating man. Why the hell is Mary 14. I had to finish the series in 3 sittings s. Not every series needs a gay person of color confident best friend. Especially the scene where he hit the demon with a van and gave John the paper with the exorcism and John knew exactly what to say... Expand

My one minor criticism—and it’s very minor—is that the pacing felt a little rushed in the pilot. Given that I could say the same thing about 90% of pilots which then lead into well-paced shows, I’m not really worried about that.

As a big fan of Supernatural who watched for all 15 years, The Winchesters is a welcome return to that universe. It’s clear that a lot of love and respect for the original series went into making the pilot. It really couldn’t be in better hands & I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store.

This is a poor to mediocre teen drama with a mild supernatural theme. It's like the past 15 years didn't exist. None of the lessons learned with the previous show were applied here. It's poorly shot and for the love of me, I couldn't figure why they've that that color correction choice. The pacing is absurd. Why spend time meeting and motivating the characters naturally when a random plot Deus ex Machina would do to force events forwards Expand

This feels like a teen drama that tries hard to be supernatural. Everyone is extremely soft, and weak. They try to act "cool" and "stylish" but just comes off as annoying. I dont know if its because of the actor or the writing but John does not act confused at all. For instance How is John not "surprised" at finding out about demons and stuff. Instead he's just goes with the flow. He doesn't question how to pronounce exorcisms, he just knows it. He doesnt train to use a silver sword, he just "knows it". Dont give me, he's a soldier so he knows how to fight. What kind of soldier trains them to use a sword when guns are available? This just feels like another CW show unfortunately. i miss dean and sam :( Expand

The two main characters are cardboard stereotypes who have the same insipid conversation over and over. Similar to how Sam and Dean argued about who was the better brother episode after episode. The secondary characters are also stereotypes, but at least have a little more substance than the leads. This is not enough to make the show interesting. The plot is generic and predictable. The acting is passable, but nothing special. The effects are meaningless because even TV commercials have effects now. Effects have become expected rather than something that makes a show or movie stand out. The days of special effects being “special” are over. Overall this show is a pointless. Expand

My ex was so adamant that I have to watch it that it felt more like a chore than anything. And by the time I did think about watching it, there was just too much of a time commitment. So this is from a non-supernatural standpoint. As another review pointed out. It feels like a teen drama. A boring teen drama. And the characters are so badly written/acted. At no point do I think that these people could fight their way out of a wet paper bag, let alone the supernatural. John, first shows up looking like he just came from brunch. Not the Vietnam war. The only way this guy was in a war is if he spent it riding a desk or crying in a trench. And he continues to come across as weak and soft. Then we have Mary. Oh she's the stong, independent loner in the leather jacket. Except that's where it ends. You can tell they tried to write her tough but she just never manages to sell it.
The rest of the team, besides being forgettable, are all cringy. I don't buy them as demon hunters for 1 second. Overall this is just a poorly written and cast show with very little going for it.

Expand
