So much squandered potential. Kate Beckinsale. Every guys' celebrity crush and the only reason this rates 2-stars, and she's not even that good in this. The pacing is so slow in this weak mystery that you will age out before it's over. I turned grey just getting through the first ep! This series plays like those B-series/movies from the early 90s. It's just so lackluster in every aspect. So much squandered potential. Kate Beckinsale. Every guys' celebrity crush and the only reason this rates 2-stars, and she's not even that good in this. It's just so lackluster in every aspect. Nothing, nothing has redeeming value here. The overall setting is the Democratic Republic of the Congo as you're constantly reminded and can you think of a worse setting in Africa?! Do you want to sit through 8 1-hr episodes staring at the filth and poverty of this landscape?! And Kate's character and the guy she runs around with must have all the time and money in the world to pursue the mystery and there's absolutely no conflict evident, no deadlines, no dwindling resources, no random violence against them, no setbacks. This is all evidence of someone who failed Plots 103 in film school. Just a fail of a series all around. Expand

A good show that is well acted, the story did not feel like it could have been real.

It had an intriguing, if mad, plot, huge ambitions spanning three countries and complex strands including Congolese child soldiers. Unfortunately, the dialogue hadn't quite got the memo. For such a vaulting project, some of it was comically corny.

Watching The Widow was like wandering around an African street market – far too many distractions and far too many tall tales to take much of the offering at face value. So you don’t end up buying much.

Affecting performances keep the series from going off the rails. Beckinsale again proves a compelling leading lady, capable of measured emotion without becoming overly maudlin even while wielding a machine gun and evading bad guys. Charles Dance and Alex Kingston imbue their characters with irascible humanity, and newcomer Shalom Nyandiko gives a beautiful and natural performance as young Adidja, a young Congolese girl forced to join a militia.
