Season two continues immediately after the shootout cliff-hanger of last season. With much of the White House staff struggling to come to terms with the events that unfolded they soon discover that there is no rest bite from the constant pressures of running the country.

As with season one the quality of writing is as good as anything else on television, Sorkin's scripts are full of drama and no shortage of humour whilst continuing to raise important issues. The acting from both the primary and secondary characters also remains of the highest standard, ensuring that The West Wing doesn't fall into the trap of becoming overly melodramatic, and whilst it will still not be a show for everyone it is certainly as intelligent and interesting as television drama can get.

"The West Wing" needs changes, and it needs them now. Without a revamping of the show in some significant fashion, it runs the risk of losing its importance, dropping its political cachet and looking for all the world like a fine, if not sterling, bit of Hollywood fictional fluffery.
