We begin with a bang in 'No Sanctuary' one of the best episodes yet, which is thrilling, emotional and thoroughly enjoyable. However, the season seems to lose it's direction as it heads towards the mid-season break. It begins to seem too hung up on Beth's situation. Later, the start of the second half is a case of 'on the road again'. A particular case that made season 4 such a problem. This freedom adds a degree of welcomed mystery but does take away an important reason to feel intrigued in terms of progression. The Alexandria story arc is my favourite thing about this season. The characters are again in a place where trust is a luxury and challenges are a formality. The addition of new characters adds a fresh air whilst allowing for interesting theorising to commence. The season ends with a new foe in sight, perhaps the worst yet. The Walking Dead's fifth season puts the show back on the right track and re-establishes the consistency of season 3 following the erratic and disappointing season 4. We get thrills and chills and a genuine longing for season 6 to come around sooner. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Walking Dead Season 5 has to take a different avenue. Season 1 & 2 were fantastic but 3,4 & now seemingly 5 seem to all be too similar. I was hoping that trying to reach Washington may be more of the old like series 1 & 2 but they keep on going away from what the show is all about. Survival!!! Too much drama, I think this snow needs a major twist. Will it happen... probably not because it makes way too much money and a twist could lose that. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Only two good episodes this season. The first one, and Four Walls and a Roof, the rest was filler. And another thing about the first half. Why do they killed off Gareth so quick? It was an amazing, interesting character. Beth getting killed was so lame, so bad directed, bad written. It's the same plot since the first season. Rick and his group looks for a place to stand, to be comfortable, to live a life, and then they destroy everything, they go to another place, destroy everything, that's it. And now, AMC will produce a Spin-Off, congratulations to AMC, and the one who will see the show, that it will probably be another show that it just entertains you, with a bad written, ok actors, ok characters, bad directed, etc. Expand

About 3 episodes in season 5 were exciting 8 to 9 outta 10 episodes, the rest were boring 2 - 3 outta 10 episodes. My god even Tribes from 20 years ago was more entertaining than this, and that was just low budget, teenage actors, trying to beat each other up kinda drama. I'm gonna struggle to watch season 6, but will hold out in the fleeting hope that 1 or 2 episodes might be half decent.

This season has gone too far. What started as a 8/10 show is now a 4/10 show for me. Rick is crazy, Sasha is crazy, the whole world is crazy. If you're going to lengthen a show, at least do so with some respect to the characters. I will still keep watching this show but with a 10 second fast foward every time a character starts to tell how sad or lost they feel.

The mid-season premier was really weak. More of the same plus some forced drama. I'm starting to not care about these characters. If they start to rely on killing off characters for impact, this show will go downhill fast.

Season 5 had a promising premiere but now things are back to what's been the problem with this show since season 2: Slow, comatose plot, inconsistent characterization (due to aforementioned lazy and incompetent writers), head scratching decisions that make no sense. For example, Abraham and co wanted to leave at night due to the danger of those cannibals. Well, after they killed them all and that danger no longer exists, why did they still leave? Why split? In a world where you KNOW that being in the group is essential why not wait a day or two and then leave together? The cannibals are dead, which is why he wanted to leave in the first place. OMG. And why did Maggie and Glen go? To keep their promise? Like what, if they hadnt gone, Abraham would have sued them? COME ON. This did not make any sense at all. And then Glenn saying to Rick it was his decision to leave with Abraham and that it should be respected, just so 5 seconds later he can make that decision FOR Maggie. Watching this show is like pulling hairs and the reason for it is Scott Gimple and his completely and utterly incompetent writing staff. Seriously, Fire them all and hire a new show-runner. Expand

In fact, I'd say this stretch has been going on for about a season and a half. The season five premiere "No Sanctuary" was one of the best episodes of television I saw last year - it was fast, it was bloody, and dispensed with the Terminus plotline with a swift and total lack of mercy. But the rest of the episodes have gone nowhere. This is a show that used to have some of the best writing and acting on television. The cinematic qualities are still there, but the writing isn't and the cast would be as great as they were in seasons past if they had better material to work with than the repetitive, uninteresting and poorly paced formulas the show now depends upon. As someone who enjoyed "The Walking Dead" in seasons 1, 2 & 3, I wish I could still watch and not spend every episode disappointed at how far it is from the show I used to love. I wish they could deliver an episode like "No Sanctuary" on a week-to-week basis, rather than just one or two episodes like it a season. Expand

This season has been the biggest letdown yet and I have a hard time continuing to justify watching it. The writing behind each episode is just lazy now and just because you can write multiple storylines just to tie them together later is not as unique as you think it is. In fact lots of what brings the heroes back together is unexplained and just conveniently happens. This season is like the last season of Lost, and I won't go through that again. Expand

Season four wasted a staggering amount of time on tiresome one-off episodes in which the scattered factions of the cast engaged in irrelevant and plodding misadventures following the forced exodus from their prison (this itself following on from the already excruciatingly dull flu outbreak story in which people we didn’t care about moaned and sweated). Give me strength.

From the majority of reviews here it looks as though avid fans of the series are willing to let the writers get away with the same trick. Four episodes into season five and we have clearly reached the ceremonial slump which will no doubt pick up by about episode 13 or 14 - just in time to wake the parish up so they might froth to everyone about how good it all is. Of course this season may prove me wrong yet.

I will resist from ranting about the many bizarre and unconvincing motivations of the characters (most recently Abraham & Glen) and the ill-conceived Eugene (oh Jesus don’t get me started on Eugene) and just say this; the show works best when it keeps focus and details the challenges that Rick Grimes faces in keeping his people safe. Now that the character of Rick has reached near Mad Max levels of intensity, the writers would do better to work with his story without the misguided deviations – this is not The Wire.

The Walking Dead is not without its merits, I have clapped with joy and anxiety at some moments – I was near orgasmic when the Terminus crew reached their end at the church – but let’s be honest, these kinds of payoffs are few and far between. To be completely fair, the show is generally diverting, I wouldn’t have come this far if it wasn’t, it even has moments of excellence, but if you’re older than 12 and genuinely think this is the best thing on TV, I feel bad for you son.

Season 4 was the season of Filler, I'm not kidding you nothing happened in that season beside the Governor attacking Ricks group, the writing was all so messy in season 4 and I was very shade about season 5 and what can the writers do to win me over again, well let me tell you something about Season 5 of The Walking Dead and that is it's ten times better than Season 4.

I felt that season 5 had a lot of things moving and there wasn't much of filler episodes in this season which I'm so happy about because filler episodes are the most forgettable ones, it's a true fact. I also thought the writing has improved a lot with the dialogue that doesn't feel boringly thought out by the writers that only want to go home for the day.

The character arks are another thing that's improved in this season because you can see the group slowly melting away into full crazy by this world that they living in and how it's eating their minds away. But in the other seasons you never got that, you know what we got, pointless talk to talk between the characters talking about something that really isn't all that important and then the episode ends. Some people call that character development well I call it lazy writing and how is it character development when two characters stare at each other telling each other that they hungry and how their feeling, really.

I got to give credit to Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes as he gives a great performance as the furiously cold Rick. Andrew is the only reason I watch The Walking Dead because these something about Rick as a character that always keeps me watching. The rest of the cast did great as well.

I'm looking forward to Season 6 to see what's next and what else the show brings even if it is part awesomeness or upsetting.

The season started off the strongest it has been in a long time with some of the bloodiest, darkest, and most action packed and tense episodes the show has seen. However it didn't stay like that for long. We got a filler arc focusing on Beth being missing for a while. When that happened both the writing and the pacing took a hit. While weaker than it started off the season was still strong. I can't say the filler arc was great, but I was still invested in the characters and story.

This first half of season 5 did have it's flaws thanks to the Beth arc, but it ended on a shocking note. It also promises a great second half. One that will go back to following the comics. It did take a hit in quality thanks to the filler, so I had to update my review and lower my score a bit, but overall I still loved this season and can't wait for the second-half.

When things go wrong on a typical drama it may feel safe to assume nothing of major consequence will happen, even when the situation seems grim, but within the world of The Walking Dead there are no such guarantees. The season premiere is a shining example of the tension that can come from blurring these expectations. In fact, the episode is so well paced and so exhilarating and enthralling that it easy to overlook some of the inconsistencies, or less believable portions of the plot (which there are some).
With "No Sanctuary" The Walking Dead has hit the ground running this season. It will be interesting to see if they can now hold, and build upon this momentum, and avoid the inconsistencies that have plagued past seasons.

Easily the best zombie themed show on television. I'm a fan of the comic who loved when Darabont and Nicotero got ahold of the property. Although it deviates from the comic(IE Daryl was created for TV) it still retains the graphic novels it's based on look and feel. If you haven't read the comic, do so, and make sure to get "All Out War" parts one and two on shelves now.

One of the best Season openers for the series. It had everything: suspense, action, drama and dark comedy. Just the first 4 minutes of the episode, audiences are catapulted to an intense battle and foreshadows what is more to come.

On the one hand, the lack of main character deaths may seem unrealistic, but it's easy to forget what these characters have been through. They aren't afraid anymore; it's everything else that should fear them instead.

It's been amazing to watch these characters evolve and devolve. It always makes me want to watch from the beginning again to compare. That's a sure sign of a great show. It's so exciting!

Season 5 is starting very strong. I don't remember another season premiere from this series that starts off the season this strong. I also love how brutal some of the scenes are in this premiere. Including one scene which seemed especially brutal for The Walking Dead, and I loved every second of it. I'm through the second episode now, and you'll be guessing the whole time who is good and who is bad. And that's one of the main reasons why I enjoy it. When you meet a new character, you have to ask yourself just like the characters have to, "Do I trust this person?" After all, the only thing more scary in a post apocalyptic world than zombies are the people themselves.

My personal thought on the series is that Season 1 was very strong. Season 2 was weaker, but still to my liking (although many people got bored of the farm). Season 3 is where the show really fell off for me. They found their footing a little bit in Season 4 even though there were too many slow episodes. I have high hopes for this season, and from the trailers I've seen, and the plot lines that I know are coming; I'm expecting Season 5 to be the best season yet.

It has the best pacing of all episodes, having wrapped up Terminus in a single episode, with sweet reunions and wonderful character defining moments for Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) and Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) in particular. It leaves questions unanswered - to be answered - in a fresh season which is assuredly tighter than its previous ones.
Following constant build-up to Terminus and a cliffhanger season 4 ending, there was no doubt it would deliver, but it still managed to surprise with its violence and gore. The show is maturing and hopefully AMC recognises this and allows them the F bombs it deserves. Gimple proves to be the best showrunner for the show, with a huge ensemble to carry 16 episodes and more fleshed out characters than ever before. Previous showrunner, Mazzara had sacrificed the development of certain characters in order to stir conflict between Rick and The Governor (David Morrissey) and struggled to handle new material to progress the show. This problem doesn't land with Gimple, who has a clear, steady arc for the 16 episodes. Last season was "How far are you willing to go to survive?" exemplified by Carol's actions last season. This season, we are aware it is "What do we become?". This season, with its 17 main chararacters will balance the hierarchy and define these people and so far, it's doing a wonderful job.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I watched the start of this season I imagined that I would go online and see at least mixed reviews of season 5. I was amazed not to find any or at least none that was coherently written (although I have no expectations that this will be any better written).

I have had several issues with this season.

Terminus Storyline – The season had so much potential with the cannibal storyline, but it was pretty much resolved within the first episode and then re-introduced and resolved again within another episode. No build up or suspense whatsoever to the break out. It feels like the second half of season 4 was just wasted.

Also while I know everyone likes Carol... her Rambo mission to free them was just ridiculous. There was one specific scene where I knew I was going to have problems with season 5. It was when Carol used her sniper gun to pierce a gas tank and lights a firework which magically somehow hits the gas tank and causes a huge explosion. How the hell did she manage that!? How could she have possibly lined that shot perfectly the first time?! It was straight out of an 80s action movie.

It had so much potential. They could have stayed imprisoned for an episode or two and watched as characters returned without their limbs and the dread and panic for the need to do something. A failed escape where a character is killed and divisions within Terminus. In the meantime Carol & Tyrese resort to torturing their captive to get information and scout the area.

Once they escape do the Hunter’s storyline except introduce a lot more tension and friction in the group.

They could have done anything instead of the 80s action scenes.

Randomly badly written moments – There are many of these that just jilt the narrative and stops me from getting absorbed. Tyrese stupid smiling when he is holding the baby, awful dialog between Carol and Daryl, etc.

Zombies – I can live with the fact that zombies no longer seem like a threat, but to the extent where they can take on large groups with little issue without using guns or having plan seems a step to far. I also do not like how the show has suddenly & more frequently started to show a lot more b-movie violence. There is at least one moment in every episode so far where there is a close up shot of a zombie being killed, but in an overly grotesque, tasteless, cartooney way if that makes sense. For instance, in episode 7 when Daryl and one of the cops are fighting and Daryl is on the ground he puts his hands in a zombie’s mouth and rips it off it body to use it as a weapon to hit the cop on his head. There are many examples of this immature violence in every episode that did not seem to be there in previous seasons.

Also while I understand that they are trying to show that the zombies are decomposing they also now feel more like an b-movie horror zombie, but I also have issues with how they moved and I realised what it is. There is a disconnect between how the zombies are moving for the most part completely fine (maybe a slight limp or as though they are drunk) but then showing them as heavily decomposing. They have shown heavily decomposed zombies in the past, but they are usually greyer (instead of red with skin falling off) with no legs or lying decomposing against a wall or tree. That to me feels to me to have more believability in the narrative.

There are a lot more issues, but I cannot bring myself to spend any more time writing this. Suffice to say I have gone from being engrossed in every episode to making comments whenever something jarring happens.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After a pretty disappointing second half of season 4, The Walking Dead breathed new life in the first half of season 4. It has been the best half season of the show so far and I can't wait for the rest of the season 5. The premiere opened up with a violent and intense assault at Terminus. Action scenes are always great in TWD and this is no different. This first half of season 5 really showed how great the show can be written and acted. The rest of the season was slower and not as intense, but that really worked well with the story. The Terminus storyline lasted a lot shorter than people were expecting it too. The next storyline would involve a hospital where is Beth is located in. The storyline and location were very compelling a breath of fresh air to the series. Beth does a great stand alone episode(an episode that is completely underrated) and Carol delivers her best performances this season. The rest of the cast was also used in a much better capacity and it was nice seeing some rather good character development this season. The ending was intense and Beth lost her life ib one of the most interesting deaths in The Walking Dead. So far, the writing, story, direction, acting, etc has all been vastly improved over prior seasons. As of right now, The Walking Dead is one of the best dramas on TV and I can't wait to see what happens next. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its hard to rate this show. While many people dont like season 4, i like it after the cast split up into different groups. You learn about the people, you start to care. And maybe thats the problem after the first 3 EPs so far in season 5.They throw in a bunch of nameless guys, add a priest and everything that happens is mostly action oriented or running arround for no reason.Plus, they split the cast a couple of times. For me, the dialogous are uninteresting in most of the scenes because of that. For example they took Carrol and Derryl out of EP 3.They are highly connected to each other while others dont have such a connection. The action is ok so far, nothing fancy.Sometimes the show is trying to shock you(for example in the scene where they eat the leg), but honestly, after the knifed kid(and the shot kid right after the knifed kid) nothing can shock the audience. So these attempts are doomed to fail, at least for my taste. What they avoid is zombies "sneaking" up to persons. That was stupid in the past, when a person looks in one direction, no zombie, he turns around and is grabbed from behind.Zombies dont sneak, im sorry. That is not in season 5 so far, big improvement. All in all seson 5 is ok so far. They can improve it further. For big fans, add +1 to my rating. - Carol goes beast mode.
    - Cannibals are always a shocking element in a post-apocalyptic world setting.
    - Varied (yet not really new) locations apart from forests.

    Cons:
    - The first half of the season does not bring plot development at all and those first two arcs get closed after the first episodes.

Season 5 starts off good with a action packed shootout scene at Terminus but than develops bland Beth is kidnapped and forced to work for some hospital people who thinks they are doing good but obviously aren't and don't trusts each other one bit so to maintain power cops will kill each other of okay? I just don't get why they came to this bland hospital drama like ark. Anyways we are introduced to this doctor who has a good personality and genuinely wants to help Beth but he becomes irrelevant after the first 3 episodes. Noah is introduced but this is just to tie Rick in with the hospital group and find Beth. A cliche thing happens as Carl is hit by a car and brought to the hospital Beth works. The group try to negotiate with a man-swap but it ends up failing when Beth moronically decides to stab Dawn the leader of the Cops. Beth is killed and Dawn is too. The violence ends there and the group leave. There are a lot of "Sasha moments" where the character Sasha just decides to angrily kill zombies, break something or whatever! We get she is angry must she be all the time. Gareth also plays a short role for an antagonists and although he survived the assault he is quickly killed off to early in the season in a brutal church massacre. Abraham's group heads to Washington thinking Eugene is a scientists that can stop the cure. Eugene says he lies and the group is left dead in the water with no hope much like how I was watching this show. The episode "Them" felt more like a filler and I wouldn't watch it if I was wasn't watching in order but it is so boring and lifeless. Falls to generic cliches like the whole group being upset or Sasha freaking out in one part she had a silencer and I was like when did they get this?
Pretty bland season compared to 4 which had a powerful antagonist, story and good music. Character deaths like Bob and Beth as sad are forgettable and not barely mentioned in the show. Tyrone also dies in a dumb way although his death sequence is well made and we see old characters. I felt it was the hardest season to finish as it had too much drama and not enough action.

Season 5 is the best season of the The Walking Dead currently. There is a sheer amount of death, loss and buildup towards a satisfying finale that does a great job on showing how far not just the characters have come but also the series as a whole. While can argue it is more shock value and sadist friendly, watching characters in the group die from careless mistakes and uncertainty rams at the show's theme and ideas of living in a post-apocalyptic world. Everyone's performances are pretty good to even great, with one of the best lines of the whole series coming from Rick saying the titular title as a representation of themselves.

There are still a few missteps and issues, but generally I saw the season to only get me hooked and excited for the next one. This is Walking Dead at its finest.

This is the best season of The Walking Dead. For some reason, The Walking Dead keeps getting better but people continue to hate it for very minuscule parts. People hate this show because it is popular? It’s stupid if you think about it. This show isn’t Breaking Bad levels of good, but if you take it for what it is, it’s amazing.

Seeing the group now seems like a family. A family of veterans in the wild coming together and surviving. You feel connected with the characters, and want them to survive but love seeing the turmoil they get them selves into and out of. I absolutely loved this season and it is perhaps my favorite season. Every episode felt fresh and you simply did not know what was going to happen. ASeeing the group now seems like a family. A family of veterans in the wild coming together and surviving. Season 5 is a good season of The Walking Dead. The story is entertaining enough and well acted by the still extremely talented cast. The addition of new characters adds a fresh air whilst allowing for interesting theorising to commence Expand

It’s swiftly paced, disgusting--lots of shots of walkers chomping on screaming faces--and puts down some much needed signposts for the rest of the season. Consider us still hooked.

Right off the bat, this new season strongly hints that the series will continue to ruminate on primal sensations of fear and survival, but that it will be more content to allow action, as opposed to a plethora of argumentative moral debates, to speak to such existential matters.

When death no longer holds the dread it once did, what's left is the fear of what life can become. And that is the boogeyman with which the characters must now wrestle.
