Every episode is a sermon about social and political issues, not entertainment. It's a news show trying to hide itself as a tv series, and almost immediately you know which way it leans. Don't expect the classic twilight zone twists or reveal at the end of each episode. The plot is explained to you halfway through, and the rest is you watching the show complete its social lecture. You know exactly the message it wants you to learn, because it barks it at you every scene. There was only one episode that tried to genuinely tell a real story. That's where the rating of 1 comes from instead of a flat zero. Plenty of good actors, but their charm is buried underneath "nag the audience" plots.

Dont waste your time on this. Much better shows out there with the real twilight zone heart in them. Or just watch the old series.

I can't believe how agenda driven that pile of **** was. There wasn't any real "twilight zone" twist in the plots, it was all agenda driven.
One episode is about a black mom trying to escape a racist white cop, one episode is about how all men are violent monsters etc etc etc.

The last episode was even poorer, being it about this new Twilight Zone and directly attepting to justify that somehow campy stories aren't as good as Jordan Peele's societal criticism, against the audience's judgement which tells us otherwise.
This show has been a massive disappointment, and feels like it is purely an usurpation of a format to serve Peele's own purposes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show started off great with episodes like the Comedian and the fresh take on Nightmare at 30,000 Feet, but as the shows carried on I noticed a worrying trend of the main antagonist almost always being straight white males. Jordan Peele's Get Out was built solely on evil white people, but it was a new fun idea. This re-imagining of the Twilight Zone has shown that to not be an isolated incident and he has given free reign to each show's writer to take this one step further reaching a new low with Not All Men where only men are affected by a meteor shower making them all evil violent maniacs. It was a commentary on toxic masculinity and the final moments came to the conclusion that all men are evil and violent and that some choose not to be. This is very insulting to all men and this kind of misandristic opinion has no place on TV. Expand

I grew up on shows like the Twilight Zone, X-Files, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Tales from the Crypt, ... This is nothing like that.

This is just a social justice-themed... show... about social justice themes. No twists, nothing to freak you out.

I'm usually pretty lenient with shows that have some lame elements, but this show is just awful.

I'll give the show credit for the diverse cast, which goes further than your average "let's add a few black people and call it a day".

I'll go so far as to say there's nothing necessarily bad about including social justice themes in your show. I'll go so far as to say some of the root problems they address are real problems in society. But it has to be done with subtly and finesse, not obvious propaganda. All the "bad guys" in the show are stereotypical caricatures.

The season 1 finale was just so boring and ridiculous I couldn't bring myself to watch season 2.

Still, this was quite a letdown on a whole there were just 2 maybe 3 out of all the episodes that were genuinely unnerving and disturbing in the right way. Everything else which is about 60 to 70 percent of was bad, boring and overly expositional; repeating something again and again even if it is a good social message does not make for good entertainment, even less so for the threshold of The Twilight Zone.

The Good

Every single cast member, all the episodes, hands down were the best part of the show. The writing given to most of them was near garbage but every actor really brought their 'A' game. Even when what I was hearing the actors say and do annoyed and bored me, watching them was the only reason I finished the show.
Special mentions to Kumail from the comedian, Sanaa from replay, Kinnear, Steven, and Marika from A traveler were all particular standouts in the season.

Concepts for almost all the episodes were worthy of the twilight zone but the writing was not. Almost every episode has a decently unique concept if executed better would have made for an excellent rebirth of this legendary show. Ep 4 A traveler being my favorite followed by Ep 3 Replay had probably the best-executed concept even handling the social messaging in an intricate enough way that the message did not overshadow the concept of what was happening.

Effects can be praised but this show was made in a time where effects needed ingenuity and creation hence the stories of the OG TWZ were so good, hence if I am to say a show in 2021 has good effects even as a TV show it is expected and as such the expectations were fairly met.

The Bad

This particular aspect of haphazardly just bolting on social issues to sci-fi/horror stories needs to stop. In the most recent memory Sabrina, Doctor Who, Star Trek, and now Twilight Zone. Social issues have their place here, but they need to be written better they need to be narrated and paced better. Except for 2 or 3 episodes every message is repeated over and over again as if you are listening to an objective announcement rather than a story. It was really boring and without the amazing cast for all 10 episodes, I probably would have stopped halfway and quit out of boredom.

Yes, we want media to involve social issues and have stories that in sci-fi and horror touch on everyday problems, but this is still primarily sci-fi and horror. Stop making it boring, stop repeating the expositional message like an objective announcement we are smart enough to get it if you write it subtly and more intertwined with the genre. This writing is so bad that by shoving the social message in haphazardly, they manage to make the message pointless. Because it feels like it was bolted on to the genre story and the genre of sci-fi and horror is also muddled because that is not where you are focusing on. This means you failed to deliver the message and failed to make a piece of genre entertainment. Turning away both sets of your viewers.

Final Words

I was really excited for this. A similar situation happened when I went into the Doctor Who reprisal all those years ago, not knowing much about the old show but the rebirth bringing back the good stuff from the old show along with the contemporary setting.
Unlike Doctor Who's initial reprisal run this fails as a rebirth attempt. I know that there is a Season 02 and I will be watching it but I have very low expectations going in due to the failure of Season 01.

I will give my short opinion and socre on all the episodes of the first season.
Ep 1 - 6/10 It was a pretty solid episode which was carried by our main actor but unfortunately it wasn't that entertaining to watch and it did got kinda boring by the end.
Ep 2 - 7/10 Now this was way more fun to watch and also really hillarious , moral of the story was pretty good too
EP 3 - 8/10 This is how Twilight should be , it was really good , the idea was nice and the actors played an amazing role ( Thumbs up to the cop he played so well that it really made you hate him)
Ep4 - 7/10- This had such a solid start and a really interesting middle part , almost in the entire episode you are intrigued on who this so called Traveler is but the ending was so generic that it kinda killed the entire good vibe of the episode
ep 5- 2/10 An alright idea which was executed incredibly bad , would advise you to skip this one, its a waste of time
ep 6 - 4/10 This was a pretty meh twilight zone episode , the idea was pretty good at least ep 7 1/10 Lmao this was such a **** feminist episode but I will give it 1 point due to the fact that there was a really short time that it was genuinely creepy cuz of the sound design and filming
Ep 8 6/10 Wish this was more developed since it just showed you a great idea but it was not that filled and developed.
ep 9 7/10 Really solid acting and idea with a meh ending
Ep 10 0/10 This was the biggest waste of time in the entire season , because the entire episode was boring as hell even the ending twist was not worth it.
Overall this was a weak restart of the twilight zone with having only a few decent things to watch 4/10

Many were great, many were garbage beyond just bad sci-fi, so I don’t think I’m coming from a nostalgic point of view when I say: This largely falls flat. From other reviews it feels like I’m expected to praise it to exhaustion because of who wrote and produced much of it, but bad is bad and this pretty bad. Even the credited writers and directors who have produced great sci-fi/thriller tv and movies can’t seem to lift this above its mediocrity. Carries similar themes to Peele’s past projects, but with an even thinner facade and with zero of the finesse like that which we saw in “Get Out.” It’s further proof, like we need more, that you can assemble a great cast and skilled film/tv creators and completely miss the mark. I went in with a bad taste in my mouth because of the awful reviews. I have to say I have no clue what those people where watching. And why they seem to low ball this series.
........

Season one hits every polical button you can push in this dawning century. Immorality of Fame, injustice of police brutality, the backing of lying politicians, the need to be the hero, etc etc. This is a very well hat tilt to Rod Sterling. I believe he would be pleased with this reboot. The original TZ was nothing but political, because we don't live in that era you ding dongs seem to not realize the severity of the originals impacts. Too many look at it as far off gergan. My only issue is this show is not as family friendly as I would hope. A lot of cursing and blaspheming is very unnecessary. It makes it very unwholesome just because of that. ........

Lastly STOP COMPARING US, GET OUT, AND ANY OTHER WORK. This isn't rock music or hip hop. No two art forms should be the same. You should not compare two art forms side by side. You would not walk into art with expectations. I am so tired of people comparing Peele's works side by side. Us was nothing like Get Out and Twilight Zone is nothing like the two. Shut up already about these comparisons.
.........
Now to sum it all up for you folks. Remember what the Twilight Zone is. Remember the view point is only as broad as the seer. This show was originally designed for the middle class white American. The vantage point is broader and wider so expect something more than the original. Do not go in with expectations. The 6 seasons of the original covered so much ground that is still relevant in today's society. There isn't much to cover. Rod Sterling's story was to bring understanding to the corrupt world we live in and if we did not get back to reality and live in the now and truth, how easily we could and would be deceived in the T.Z. Know thyself.

Again I just see a bunch of racist people trying to kill the only black male in American film directing that will not submit to their lies and reality. Welcome to the Twilight Zone! Aka Satan's playground. Will I be back for season 2? Probably not because im 100% sure this is not pleasing to the Lord. But keep it up Jordan. Haters gonna hate. Show is great, just wish you'd consider all the blaspheming God's name as you push away a significant audience of Christians.

The thing for me that makes me love it so much is probably the pacing in this series. It is honestly so good that even the episodes withe bad plot lines are still entertaining and fun to watch. There were only two of the ten episodes that I didn't enjoy thoroughly, those being episodes 7 and 8 and while those episodes weren't BAD, they were just the least enjoyable episodes. I am not saying this is better than the original series, because it's not, but this series succeeded in one of the only areas where the original series failed. If there was a bad plot in the original series, it was a bad episode. But if there is a bad plot in this series, the episode was still engaging and entertaining. The acting from every single one of the main characters in all the episodes is absolutely amazing, and the cinematography is just, perfect. Probably the only major issue I had with this series was that a few of the plots tried to have a lot of social commentary and that was sometimes distracting from what The Twilight Zone is all about. But even those social commentaries didn't take away from my positive experience with this series. I whole-heatedly love this show and highly recommend it, but I can also see why some people not like it and if you absolutely hate this series, that's fine. But, I personally love it, the characters are great, the stories are engaging and suspenseful, and it's just overall a great show in my opinion. But again, if you disagree with me, I completely understand. Expand

I watched the first two episodes and I'm already checked out. The first episode seemed okay, but the second episode gave me a better idea of what this show is attempting. Apparently the goal is to demonize white men as much as possible. Jordan Peele should just stick to comedy, he's really out of his wheelhouse in the suspense/horror genre. It also makes it worse when you inject your personal political views into every episode, and I'm saying this as someone who is fairly liberal. Rod Serling would not have wanted this show to simply become a vehicle for propaganda. Expand
