Creator Sarah-Kate Lynch knows precisely the niche “The Sounds” is meant to fill, a soapy nighttime diversion along the lines of “Big Little Lies,” “The Affair,” “Little Fires Everywhere” and “Sharp Objects,” with the advantage of sweeping New Zealand land- and seascapes, the glory of the Marlborough Sounds of the South Island, perhaps with a few more moody, meaningful closeups and music that brings it all home like an Uber driver on NyQuil. “The Sounds,” in eight parts, is not out to revolutionize TV, but it does have bingeability.

This is a marginal recommendation because we’re hoping The Sounds gets better as the mystery progresses. But in the slow first episode, not a lot happens, which makes us even more annoyed when information is purposely held back from viewers.
