This show is... not great. You can tell it is pulled from solid source material because the world-building is awesome, but that is all there is to it.

It was a slow pace but interesting. Did create a new world kind of experience. But not much superhero action. I did not finish the series. It did not seem like it would be worth the time investment. Reading other reviews I can see most feel about the same, good start but slowly turning into a woke agenda manifesto. The waiter approaches the table asking if they want more coffee, when he walks off one of the two man ask how old they think he is, the woman replies 16 or 17 so too old for you, he comments oh seems younger…disgusting, who Netflix is getting seriously sick like all this insane agenda that they insist promoting. Why did I watch it I wonder, probably I should just save the money and stop watching this crap… Expand

I was hooked in the first episode. Loved the world-building and the intelligent dialogue. Then episode 7 came along and "the sandman", the guy this show was supposedly based around, quickly became a side-character in his own show to make wayI was hooked in the first episode. Then episode 7 came along and "the sandman", the guy this show was supposedly based around, quickly became a side-character in his own show to make way for strong independent woman POC character who was just boring and personally, can't even act that well. Wish I had stopped watching at episode 6 to save myself the boredom.

Also found it cringe that so many of the characters are gay. I think ~5% of the population is homosexual but this show would have you believe that it was 50%+. It ruins the suspension of disbelief when the show is supposed to be taking place in the modern world setting I think.
Summary: Great Start, Sad and Pathetic Finish… Expand

The series based on the well-known The Sandman comics was broadcast on Netflix with great expectations, which unfortunately went in the direction of GET WOKE GO BROKE AGAIN, after the first few minutes! Just bad what has been coming out of HOLLYWOKE for the last 3-4 years, especially the episode in the American Diner, I turned it off, with the best of intentions I couldn't take it anymore and really bad, the character JOHN Constantine, now a small woman with thin arms (Mary Sue) who's also a lesbian?!! Misandry, misandy everywhere you look. Then the longed-for liberator, of course, a ugly black girl etc. etc., horrible, bad, without words...I'm not a racist and I love strong good women (black or white, who cares!), I don't hate gays, lesbians etc. ,my favorite movies are Alien 1979, Philadelphia 1993 and Blade 1998, but must have ALL good protagonists gay, lesbian, trans, women (Mary Sue), black and all white men, being stupid dumb and wimps?! Misandry and contempt against the majority everywhere..

Sandman is very smartly written. Like in the comics, Gaiman uses the Hero's Journey to explore themes common to all people. Themes of purpose, ambition, belonging, and mortality are all covered in this first season of The Sandman, among others. Fans of the original comic might be disappointed in one or two episodes that don't go as dark as the comics, but this is a new medium. Things that worked in the comics won't so much in television. I feel that Gaiman and the producers do a fine job of updating the story and leaning into the strengths of this new format. The series stays true to the original intention of the comic, and that's what most fans are going to be concerned with. Those who are new to the story needn't worry about how well they are able to keep up, either. They'll enjoy getting to know all these characters from the start, in a series that's as relevant today as the comic was in the 90's. By now, Sandman's been approved for a season 2. So buckle in, it's going to be a wild ride.… Expand

The perfect Adaption. The character has grown with the time which is fitting since he is an endless. Enjoyed from begging to end. Having watched the entire series, I have a mixed reaction. Apparently Neil told viewers to expect a 'looser' adaptation, and that is what this is.

The good: Morpheus is spot on. In fact, all of the Endless are. The scenes that draw directlyHaving watched the entire series, I have a mixed reaction. Apparently Neil told viewers to expect a 'looser' adaptation, and that is what this is.

The good: Morpheus is spot on. In fact, all of the Endless are. The scenes that draw directly from the source material are moving, brilliant, so well-acted, particularly the exchanges between Dream and Death - say what you will about Death's casting, but it makes sense: she does where the Ankh, after all, and the performance is so good, nothing else matters. The effects are superb, the realms are exactly how I, at least, always imagined them. Proper service could never have been done to this story at any other time than in our modern CG age. Really, the portions of the story that are in line with the comics are just amazing.

The bad: I am not opposed to 'inclusivity', though I loathe the word in this context due to it being Hollywood code for 'inclusion riders', which were created by lawyers, not by creators, and if they are imposed, there's really nothing one can do. Some of the swapping here doesn't make any sense at all, e.g.: Lucien, Lucifer(if Lucifer was inspired by David Bowie, why is Gwendolyn playing the character, as undeniably a wonderful an actress she is?), Rose Walker, even Constantine, though Jenna Coleman does a great job with the role. It is absolutely correct, as anyone that has read the comics knows, that The Sandman was already representative of a very broad spectrum for the time. This just feels forced and arbitrary a lot of the time, and it's a pet peeve of mine. How does this serve the story? Neil has been quoted as saying that when one really cares about people they want to include them, and I don't disagree, but this feels gratuitous and a decision made under the presupposition that white folks are inherently flawed and to be marginalized, a very sad Hollywood trend, particularly in comic-based stories. I don't think Mr. Gaiman realizes that 'woke' and 'progressive' are actually antonyms.

Another complaint people have had is that the story is so non-linear, but if you've read the comics, you know that already, so it shouldn't be an issue if you are a fan of the original series. And bear in mind this is a series based on what was a bit character when he was first introduced into the DC canon. All in all this is both the best and worst Neil Gaiman adaptation I've seen, which is frustrating. I guess a fan can't have it all. The majority of it is quite good, and again, at times, brilliant (for me, particularly episode six, which a lot of people have complained about for some reason). I find ret-conning to be incredibly jarring without context for the decisions made. If that doesn't bother you, you will probably love this to a perfect 8 - 10. For the rest of us: I wish had been a bit more. But it is still worth your time. Watch it for Morpheus alone if nothing else, as he is terrific, the first episode is absolutely great, and the rest have enough wonderful moments to carry the series for this fan of the comics.… Expand

I regret it, to an extent. Because, while the show is visually interesting and has some cool concepts and takes on the whole universe/spheres/dreams theme, the actual plot and characters are rather boring.
Even after 10 episodes it's unclear what the core narrative really is, as the show seems to change focus every 4 episodes. None of the characters stand out either (other than the Corinthian) as particularly fun or interesting.

Frankly, it's a drag to watch, even if there are individually cool episodes (Diner espisode).… Expand

Started ok. I have to give cred for the atmosphere and effects used in this series. The bad side: The cast was not much to write home about and the woke agenda they trying to trash me with.

Read all Sandman comics, and because of that I already knew more than less everything that was going to happen.

However try as they might they couldn't revitalize something that is not exactly made for everyone. Sandman stories are already not for everyone, and The Sandman will seem like a bad acid trip to some.

Some choices were spot on like Tom Sturridge as Dream, or Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death. However David Thewlis as Doctor Destiny, was a big let down, not being able to capture at all the essence of the character. But no bigger disappointment like the one of the choice to play Lucifer. Gwendoline Christie didn't nailed the part at all, because Lucifer of Neil Gaiman is not at all as she tried to make it seem. She showed neither the charisma, personality, or presence of Lucifer.

Also the show quickly loses whatever drive it has after episode 5. By episode 6 any viewer can be forgiven to ask why are they even watching the show anymore. Although the interaction of Dream with Death is like it should be, after that point each episode seems like a filler.

The show isn't bad but it also isn't good. And for those that already knew what was going to happen, it felt even less. Because it was like watching someone else retell a story, that one already knows, but in an inferior way.

It's watchable and it even has some good moments, but not enough to make it anything even worth recommending.

Like the sands of Dream, this show will also go down like that. A dream long forgotten.… Expand

Who the heck was this adaptation for exactly?

Seriously though, what in the actual **** did I just watch? I saw the first 5 minutes of episode 3 with my brother and was intrigued enough to go and binge the whole 11 episodes presently on Netflix. Turns out I fell for the trap, however.

I don't know why I keep giving Netflix shows the benefit of the doubt. They are always, ALWAYS, mediocre at best.

There is woke agenda slathered all over the script which results in the pacing being abruptly halted over and over again by some sort of insert. There is a LOT of gay in this show. Nothing wrong with gays but, I swear, there is a new gay couple every episode. It's annoying, almost frustrating, like the writers thought viewers can't pick up on their woke messages so they just plugged them in again and again. And it's always super obvious. Literally looked at like three of the guys before they showed up as gay and was like "oop, there's another one."

I watched this show because I was interested in the whole "gods who rule different aspects of the universe" thing. How do the gods that so much of our religious teachings are based off of show up in this interpretation. After episode 4 though, all of it just fell by the wayside.

Seriously, who was this adaptation for? Don't watch this unless all of the aforementioned nonsense sounds good to you.… Expand

What about Sandman? There are no compliments that do the show justice. The adaptation of the comic for the series is surprisingly wonderful, the setting, the handpicked actors... all a care that makes me like the work of Neil Gaiman more and more.

The books hold a very special place in my heart, and I was incredibly leery of it being made into a live action series. For anyone complaining about the changes made to characters, those decisions were made by Neil Gaiman. Those changes fit the series well. If people complaining about LGBT+ characters had truly read the books, they’d know very well that Neil’s vision was always progressive. I’ve never seen any adaptation stick as close to the source material as Sandman does, though it does mix up some of the short stories in a way that works well.… Expand

I've been trying to think about how this show went from mildly substantive, entertaining and fun to just about unwatchable in it's ten, now eleven, episode first season. I had an idea of what went wrong, but I wanted to sit on it a bit andI've been trying to think about how this show went from mildly substantive, entertaining and fun to just about unwatchable in it's ten, now eleven, episode first season. I had an idea of what went wrong, but I wanted to sit on it a bit and see if others felt the same way. After a very intense concussion to the first narrative the show gives, the second comes and just doesn't hold up. It's boring at best. I'm trying not to come down on the actors too hard because there is only so much they can give with what they had to work with, but everyone just comes off "samey" as in "the same." Same facial expressions. Same energy. Same lame cadence in delivering lines almost waiting for their turn to speak and not acting. The crazy thing is the youngest actor who plays Jed does great. Genuine emotion and tears. Everything else is flat. There is some scary stuff going on when everyone meets up at the end, but you never feel any tension. That's a shame because they could have done some really crazy stuff in the dream sequences. Like a lot of Netflix shows these days if you have the service I'd give it a watch, but maybe stop at the conclusion of the first story.… Expand

The stories roam between his domain of mystical creatures and the land of regular (and some not-so-regular) humans. Of course, the dual realities blend as the titular character tries to repair "the dreaming" after his 100 year captivity. There are some interesting visuals and fascinating concepts (the Cereal convention is especially bizarre), but there's also plenty of dialogue discussing the concepts and outcomes. The plots are a bit of a labyrinth, so it's necessary to have this talking, even though it slows things down. This epic vision has sufficient elements to keep it interesting, but could use a simpler structure. BTW, there are technically 10 eps, but Netflix dropped a surprise bonus 11th, which includes an animated story ("A Dream of a Thousand Cats" featuring the voices of Sandra Oh, James McAvoy and Michael Sheen) and "Calliope," which explores Morpheus' ex-girlfriend.… Expand

As usual with one of Neil Gaiman's television adaptations, he's put a huge effort into making it something really special. The cast is amazing and the scripts do a great job of translating the source material to the screen.

Woke beyond all points of reason.
Collected the comics monthly for the years of entire run, loved the story and characters.
Now it's black-washing, gender swapping, changing the story for no reasons. Sad that Gaiman decided to **** on all theWoke beyond all points of reason.

I was initially sceptical that some of the elements wouldn’t translate well to live-action but was quickly put to bed by the fantastic performances by the entire cast. Everyone pulls their weight here. If I had any qualms it would be with some of the late-game CG (Azazel in particular was a bit iffy) but the heart and soul of the series is well and truly bared here. Episode 6 is divine and 5 made some well considered changes to the source material that I enjoyed. Can’t wait for more!… Expand

Unwatchable. Utterly disrespectful to the source material. Audio is mixed poorly. Prepare to constantly adjust the volume to compensate for the MC endlessly droning mumbles.

Show only good to cure a bout of insomnia.

I find it pathetic that so many reviewers get triggered by alternative lifestyles. That being said, I think that Dream is a bit drab; I wish he had a bit more life to himself. As always the usual crowd of whiners have descended upon this series to review bomb it decrying its wokeness. What I find incomprehensible is that some of them claim to have read and enjoyed the original comic book. What I find incomprehensible is that some of them claim to have read and enjoyed the original comic book. Some complain about the casting. The comic has one issue that literally casts Morpheus as a black man (the one about his fling with African queen Nada). It has many gay characters and at least one transgender. One of the Endless is actually non binary. Sandman the comic was well ahead of its time and if you read it and the diversity in the TV series bothers you, that means that 90% of it flew over your head and you just paid attention to the magic and the cool goth outfits. In reality I think the series is extremely true to the source material, maybe too much. I wonder if people who haven’t read the comic will understand it or enjoy it, but for fans like me it’s an absolute delight. Of course you have to change things in order to make it work on TV but they’ve kept many bits of dialogue verbatim and even some of the scenes are copies of comic panels. 24/7 and The Sound of Her Wings are fans’ favourites and they’ve nailed them. Of course not everything is perfect. Johanna Constantine is good but not as good as John from the comics, and the episode about Hob Gadlin feels a bit bolted on, but overall the series is a treat if you like the original comic.… Expand

What's wrong with the Netflix show? I can sum it up in one word: Wokeness.

Rose Walker is now black .. For no reason at all.
Lucien is also black and a woman .. For no reason at all.
John Constantine is now a woman too and (of course) a lesbian .. For no reason at all.

There's not a single reason why you would claim to stick to the source material on one hand and then recast the whole thing anyway for sake of .. Yeah, why exactly?… Expand

And a typical underdeveloped strong female character, that just there for the sake of posing and being overrated by everyone.

The style is great, the narrative is unique. And there's some episodes that just uhm.. Movie Quality! But the overall attention get distracted more for making cool spectacle, it left the characters hollow and the narrative much to be desired… Expand

There was one episode where my spouse and I looked at each other and both commented that it didn't even seem like we were watching the same show anymore.

At first, the wokeness that other complain about on here didn't bother us. But it gets to a point where its gets ridiculous and its hard to suspend belief anymore.… Expand

The other obvious problem is the lack of fidelity with the source material.

Fans of Gaiman's original graphic works are not going to be happy with the changes that have been made in this interpretation because they have been provided many significant reasons to be displeased.

It's actually difficult to believe Gaiman is as comfortable with this reimagining of his work as he claims.

Regarding the other contents... The costume and set design are intricate and very beautiful.

Alas, it is not good enough to carry the story.

Put another way, if this were being assessed the way you judge a painting, you'd like it a lot more.

The acting is challenging to review because the quality is very inconsistent.

Without naming names, some members of the cast were clearly not selected based on their acting abilities.

In the end, this is a tragic misstep, made with an intellectual property that had enormous potential.

Tragically, it will only be remembered as another example of writers refusing to respect the much loved stories and fans they seek to exploit for profit.

Why studios continue to adopt this approach when it inevitably fails remains a mystery to me.… Expand

The Constantine comic book series is another iconic one. The stories connect a few times. Constantine, John, is a self-centered, unethical and at times amoral anti-hero. He strives to do good through mostly evil ways. The character hints at bissexuality.

Is this enough to the people writing the script? Nope.

Enter JOHANNA Constantine. Yes, a woman. A lesbian one, at that. And very ethical and moral too. Dabbles with demons, but she's a good girl. After all, women can't be evil except when forced to be so by men, the scourge of the Earth....

If aliens got to Earth and watched this they would be certain of two things regarding sexuality: half of the population is not heterosexual - and the other half would be bisexual if allowed to do so.

Don't get me wrong, I advocate live and let live. But there is no country in the world with that proportion of non heterosexuals.

Then there is the historical revisioning.

During the XIV to XVI centuries black people in the UK (and Europe in general) did not occupy positions of importance, nor were them among the well-to-do or even rich.

Portraying them so is a disservice to kids - and to black people, as their plight in European lands is at least severely diminished, if not erased.… Expand

I was a huge fan of the every 100 years meetup with the gentleman that Morpheus met at the bar and wanted to see more of that story. I will definitely be checking out the comics after watching this and am looking forward to a season 2 hopefully where they improve on the small amount of issues in season 1.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I actually read the comic back in the college, thought it was just ok. Watching this now, as an adult with actual life experience, its just comes across as pretentious and cringe. Neil Gaiman can't write. The Preludes and Nocturnes arc was boring enough that they had to change it up for pacing.The Doll's House just frickin ends with a deus ex machina ass pull conclusion. Sandman works as a comic maybe because the static panels lend to the characters just standing around talking but when you translate that to live action you get exactly what you expect:characters standing around and talking! Its basically a soap opera with fantastical characters. No wonder the fanbase is mostly women or feminine dudes.… Expand

Neil Gaiman served as executive producer on the series and signed off on all the casting choices. The series is almost a 1:1 adaptation of the original and, if you liked the original, you will probably like that. Watch lots of tv and this is great. Great effects, great story. For at least once Metacritic critics are wrong. Story is not hard to follow at all. It’s a fun ride. a great escape from dog days of August. Enjoy!
