It will simply make you doubt how good the comic book actually was in the first place. The casting is disappointing, the pace and rhythm weak, and the changes made to the original source material seem to have been introduced either merely on a whim or to make the series more Bechdel-test-friendly. Overall, it is ok as something to have in the background, but it is hardly innovative. It is definitely not thought-provoking. Hell, it is barely entertaining. Expand

This TV adaptation is equivalent to shaving with the dullest razorblade possible. It is nearly offensive in how uninspired and uninspiring the writing, acting and the visuals are.

If you're a zealot of the comics, then maybe you'll find it passable, although I hope you don't, for the dignity of every writer and artist who ever contributed anything to the original material.

The Sandman is yet another staunch refusal to obtain an IP and create a show with any form of sensibility or entertainment value. I envy the mental gymnastic capabilities of those who can sit through this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The series based on the well-known The Sandman comics was broadcast on Netflix with great expectations, which unfortunately went in the direction of GET WOKE GO BROKE AGAIN, after the first few minutes! Just bad what has been coming out of HOLLYWOKE for the last 3-4 years, especially the episode in the American Diner, I turned it off, with the best of intentions I couldn't take it anymore and really bad, the character JOHN Constantine, now a small woman with thin arms (Mary Sue) who's also a lesbian?!! Misandry, misandy everywhere you look. Then the longed-for liberator, of course, a ugly black girl etc. etc., horrible, bad, without words...I'm not a racist and I love strong good women (black or white, who cares!), I don't hate gays, lesbians etc. ,my favorite movies are Alien 1979, Philadelphia 1993 and Blade 1998, but must have ALL good protagonists gay, lesbian, trans, women (Mary Sue), black and all white men, being stupid dumb and wimps?! Misandry and contempt against the majority everywhere..
Shame on you HOLLYWOKE!

Then episode 7 came along and "the sandman", the guy this show was supposedly based around, quickly became a side-character in his own show to make way for strong independent woman POC character who was just boring and personally, can't even act that well. Wish I had stopped watching at episode 6 to save myself the boredom.

Also found it cringe that so many of the characters are gay. I think ~5% of the population is homosexual but this show would have you believe that it was 50%+. It ruins the suspension of disbelief when the show is supposed to be taking place in the modern world setting I think.

Idiots are panning this series because they are offended by POC and LGBTQ+ being visible in media. Let me actually tell you about the show, not the politics.

Sandman is very smartly written. Like in the comics, Gaiman uses the Hero's Journey to explore themes common to all people. Themes of purpose, ambition, belonging, and mortality are all covered in this first season of The Sandman, among others. Fans of the original comic might be disappointed in one or two episodes that don't go as dark as the comics, but this is a new medium. Things that worked in the comics won't so much in television. I feel that Gaiman and the producers do a fine job of updating the story and leaning into the strengths of this new format. The series stays true to the original intention of the comic, and that's what most fans are going to be concerned with. Those who are new to the story needn't worry about how well they are able to keep up, either. They'll enjoy getting to know all these characters from the start, in a series that's as relevant today as the comic was in the 90's. By now, Sandman's been approved for a season 2. So buckle in, it's going to be a wild ride.

It gets to a point toward the end where they're introducing characters out of nowhere who are supposed to be hugely consequential. It feels like what is the point of everything we've been watching all season if it's all meaningless and there's this whole new plotline with new characters we've never met before? There was one episode where my spouse and I looked at each other and both commented that it didn't even seem like we were watching the same show anymore.

At first, the wokeness that other complain about on here didn't bother us. But it gets to a point where its gets ridiculous and its hard to suspend belief anymore.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I actually read the comic back in the college, thought it was just ok. Watching this now, as an adult with actual life experience, its just comes across as pretentious and cringe. Neil Gaiman can't write. The Preludes and Nocturnes arc was boring enough that they had to change it up for pacing. The Doll's House just frickin ends with a deus ex machina ass pull conclusion. Sandman works as a comic maybe because the static panels lend to the characters just standing around talking but when you translate that to live action you get exactly what you expect:characters standing around and talking! Its basically a soap opera with fantastical characters. No wonder the fanbase is mostly women or feminine dudes. Expand

With the first half get enough time for the overall development. And the second half completely overlooked, just like tossed it in for the sake of agendas. Who cares about character development? as long as we have a woke representative character everywhere. Don't make it deep, just enough for a face value one. And a typical underdeveloped strong female character, that just there for the sake of posing and being overrated by everyone.

The style is great, the narrative is unique. And there's some episodes that just uhm.. Movie Quality! But the overall attention get distracted more for making cool spectacle, it left the characters hollow and the narrative much to be desired

I had an idea of what went wrong, but I wanted to sit on it a bit and see if others felt the same way. After a very intense concussion to the first narrative the show gives, the second comes and just doesn't hold up. It's boring at best. I'm trying not to come down on the actors too hard because there is only so much they can give with what they had to work with, but everyone just comes off "samey" as in "the same." Same facial expressions. Same energy. Same lame cadence in delivering lines almost waiting for their turn to speak and not acting. The crazy thing is the youngest actor who plays Jed does great. Genuine emotion and tears. Everything else is flat. There is some scary stuff going on when everyone meets up at the end, but you never feel any tension. That's a shame because they could have done some really crazy stuff in the dream sequences. Like a lot of Netflix shows these days if you have the service I'd give it a watch, but maybe stop at the conclusion of the first story. Expand

Read all Sandman comics, and because of that I already knew more than less everything that was going to happen.

However try as they might they couldn't revitalize something that is not exactly made for everyone. Sandman stories are already not for everyone, and The Sandman will seem like a bad acid trip to some.

Some choices were spot on like Tom Sturridge as Dream, or Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death. However David Thewlis as Doctor Destiny, was a big let down, not being able to capture at all the essence of the character. But no bigger disappointment like the one of the choice to play Lucifer. Gwendoline Christie didn't nailed the part at all, because Lucifer of Neil Gaiman is not at all as she tried to make it seem. She showed neither the charisma, personality, or presence of Lucifer.

Also the show quickly loses whatever drive it has after episode 5. By episode 6 any viewer can be forgiven to ask why are they even watching the show anymore. Although the interaction of Dream with Death is like it should be, after that point each episode seems like a filler.

The show isn't bad but it also isn't good. And for those that already knew what was going to happen, it felt even less. Because it was like watching someone else retell a story, that one already knows, but in an inferior way.

It's watchable and it even has some good moments, but not enough to make it anything even worth recommending.

Like the sands of Dream, this show will also go down like that. A dream long forgotten.

Sandman is one of the most iconic comic book series ever made.

This Netflix live action implementation has great production, props, music, ambiance......but has generally poor actors and actresses and has been completely distorted to accomodate woke concepts.

The Constantine comic book series is another iconic one. The stories connect a few times. Constantine, John, is a self-centered, unethical and at times amoral anti-hero. He strives to do good through mostly evil ways. The character hints at bissexuality.

Is this enough to the people writing the script? Nope.

Enter JOHANNA Constantine. Yes, a woman. A lesbian one, at that. And very ethical and moral too. Dabbles with demons, but she's a good girl. After all, women can't be evil except when forced to be so by men, the scourge of the Earth....

If aliens got to Earth and watched this they would be certain of two things regarding sexuality: half of the population is not heterosexual - and the other half would be bisexual if allowed to do so.

Don't get me wrong, I advocate live and let live. But there is no country in the world with that proportion of non heterosexuals.

Then there is the historical revisioning.

During the XIV to XVI centuries black people in the UK (and Europe in general) did not occupy positions of importance, nor were them among the well-to-do or even rich.

Portraying them so is a disservice to kids - and to black people, as their plight in European lands is at least severely diminished, if not erased.

What's wrong with the Netflix show? I can sum it up in one word: Wokeness.

Rose Walker is now black .. For no reason at all.
Lucien is also black and a woman .. For no reason at all.
John Constantine is now a woman too and (of course) a lesbian .. For no reason at all.

There's not a single reason why you would claim to stick to the source material on one hand and then recast the whole thing anyway for sake of .. Yeah, why exactly?

BUT. This is one of the wokest series I have ever seen. Call me whatever you want. I do not care. There is not a single white straight male who is a good guy, except Sandman himself. They swapped half of the characters, either gender or ethnicity. There was no reason for that. They focused more on showing and explaining little agendas that on the mindblowing world that Gaiman once created. And I will never forgive the change of Death. No disrespect towards the actress, she is great, she did good job with the role she was given. But if you read Sandman, you know who Death is. And it absolutely isn´t who she is in this series. Sad. I am just sad.

A story used to push a narrative
This show was interesting for a couple of minutes until every episode dived deeper into shoveling a bunch of woke ideology down your throat. From what I've heard about the comic that inspired this show, it was fantastic and all the creators needed to do was follow the comic script, however, this show is sadly just a twisted version of the comic to shove in as much wokeness as they can. Another Netflix show is ruined because is east of focusing on the actual story to entertain, they focused on what political ideas they wanted to push and forced the story to go in that direction. All and all, this show had so many problems that were added to it because the story was driven by political views rather than creativity.

I had low expectations and I have not been let down. I am currently slogging through the third episode and, I may revisit this review, if I manage to finish the whole show. It is worth mentioning, that I am a massive Sandman comics fan and II had low expectations and I have not been let down. I am currently slogging through the third episode and, I may revisit this review, if I manage to finish the whole show. It is worth mentioning, that I am a massive Sandman comics fan and I have quite an emotional connection with the source material. The way it was „improved” has not irked me, cause it was exactly as one would expect in the current year, given the company that has released the show. In a way, „predictable” is a very apt word for the show. It is a typical Netflix slop, wearing a skinsuit of its brilliant source material. There’s a lot of CGI, subwoofer sound effects and questionable casting choices. The dialogues are as one would predict in the current year, ticking all the boxes. The race and gender swaps are as one would predict in the current year, ticking all the boxes. The original comic storyline is relentlessly blended into a script that is both hectic and sluggish. The showrunners rush straight off the gate blending comic episodes one to five into just the first two episodes. The time saved on character development is spent on charmlessly introducing many altered characters. Anybody, who has seen more than one Netflix show, will easily recoginse them all. They are the typical cast of corporate archetypes, wearing some semblance of persons mentioned in the Sandman comics. The main character is played by an actor, who looks great on stills and handles well Morpheus’s aloofness, bar his gravitas. A pleasant stand-out so far is the Cain and Able’s actors, whose storyline follows the original well thus far and are as one would imagine them reading the comic. Rest of the characters are either ephemerae with little screen time, or charisma voids readng the Netflix script, not bothered with the setting all that much, Charles Dance, for example, belongs to the former cathegory. For an actor mentioned all over the promotional material, he gets less than five minutes of presence in the entire show leaving it with a whimper. Constantinette is the example of later. She is a token girlboss, damned be the setting. Her presence is justified by showing the original constantine as a drunk, bumbling loser laying on the floor in stupor. She also puts out a stereotypical cockney accent, has a gun and has a house full of artifacts pertaining to daemons, so she is THE Constantine in the show. Also, as opposed to the comic Constantine, she has no moments of weakness or levity. She is always coldly in total control of every situation she is in. As said previously - predictable. She is one of many swapped characters, and I can only expect such quality in the future ones too, would I decide to continue watching. A character, I am hopeful for is Dr D. While some of his particulars were changed likely due to copyright disputes, he plays a bitter madman quite well thus far. An absolute nightmare (!) is the Corynthian. He makes an excellent lesser villain appearing later in the comic, where his aura of threat and dread is built by his sparse appearances - only to visit horrible (PG 18+ and a media outrage) violence upon others. In the show, he is the major vilain, and a sort of evil Yoda/Gandalf type of character, who appears to give the villain of the episode (and likely the viewer) exposition on what in the hell is happening and summarise character’s motivations. Also, as opposed to being a gruesome monstrosity of the original, he is just a dude. Kind of wacky, bumbling type of bloke, wearing a funny hat to boot. We know he is evil, cause he explicitly says he has an evil plan and he flashes his monstrous eyes, even though he takes no action to prove it. Well, he comes to villains’ houses gives them quick rundowns on story thus far. Ah, and yes. He gets girlbossed too. Big time. Warts and all, he seems to be doing a crucial service to new viewers. No person, without the knowledge of the original, would physically be able to follow the plot. It is a convoluted mess with an avalanche of bland characters doing things for reasons in places. Speaking of places, good half of them are Netflix-quality CGI and more than half of them (especially the physical ones) are in the absolute abyssal darkness. I believe the lightman needs to either be fired, or given a raise. Due to his work, Netflix could hire just five actors to play everybody in the same office room and no viewer would notice the difference. The savings man offers, may deserve him a larger cut of the revenue. If I was to extrapolate, from what I have seen thus far, I believe the show will go down the Witcher route and become a Netflix background play#4134 subverting the expectation and roaming free of the original material. All in all, I am still debating, whether to continue watching or not. On one hand hand, I do not want to remember my beloved series as what it had been made into. On the other hand, the corporate Sandman does what he does best. Puts people to sleep Expand

The show consists of actors moving to and fro. You can’t fill in for an absence of story with random movement. Like those shows where people brush their teeth or drive a car and stare off into space. The equivalent of a written story with the same sentence over and over. The equivalent of a written story with the same sentence over and over. The equivalent of a written story with the same sentence over and over. See, it’s boring. Scenery is not storytelling. In visual storytelling the scenes should enhance the story, not detract from it. The point should still be to tell a good story. I’ve noticed an increase in pointless drawn out scenes in movies and shows in recent years. I guess some out of touch fool in film school is teaching this garbage. The fool is wrong. Movies and shows should entertain with a good story, not bore the viewer with drawn out scenes. There are numerous options for my entertainment time and will not waste it sitting in the waiting room. Expand

Outside of a few CGI scenes this comes off as a cosplay larp...a bad one. Ep 1 was the best episode by far but it goes straight down after that.

I think part of the problem is that the comic just doesn't translate well to live action, there is no space to build emotional and atmospheric qualities. Instead what you get is a monotone delivery of the dialogue that carries no emotional weight.

Then there is the casting which if you value comic book accuracy will disappoint you to put it mildly.

There are so many things wrong with this series, but the biggest one is that it is profoundly boring.

The people behind The Sandman found a way to make cosmic struggles only marginally more amusing than watching paint dry.

The other obvious problem is the lack of fidelity with the source material.

Fans of Gaiman's original graphic works are not going to be happy with the changes that have been made in this interpretation because they have been provided many significant reasons to be displeased.

It's actually difficult to believe Gaiman is as comfortable with this reimagining of his work as he claims.

Regarding the other contents... The costume and set design are intricate and very beautiful.

Alas, it is not good enough to carry the story.

Put another way, if this were being assessed the way you judge a painting, you'd like it a lot more.

The acting is challenging to review because the quality is very inconsistent.

Without naming names, some members of the cast were clearly not selected based on their acting abilities.

In the end, this is a tragic misstep, made with an intellectual property that had enormous potential.

Tragically, it will only be remembered as another example of writers refusing to respect the much loved stories and fans they seek to exploit for profit.

Why studios continue to adopt this approach when it inevitably fails remains a mystery to me.

The actors chosen are all superb in their roles, chosen for their acting skills and ability to play the personality of the character. The negative reviews all seem too focused on the physical aspects of the casting which is absurd given that the Endless have no set physical form. What I find incomprehensible is that some of them claim to have read and enjoyed the original comic book. Some complain about the casting. The comic has one issue that literally casts Morpheus as a black man (the one about his fling with African queen Nada). It has many gay characters and at least one transgender. One of the Endless is actually non binary. Sandman the comic was well ahead of its time and if you read it and the diversity in the TV series bothers you, that means that 90% of it flew over your head and you just paid attention to the magic and the cool goth outfits. In reality I think the series is extremely true to the source material, maybe too much. I wonder if people who haven’t read the comic will understand it or enjoy it, but for fans like me it’s an absolute delight. Of course you have to change things in order to make it work on TV but they’ve kept many bits of dialogue verbatim and even some of the scenes are copies of comic panels. 24/7 and The Sound of Her Wings are fans’ favourites and they’ve nailed them. Of course not everything is perfect. Johanna Constantine is good but not as good as John from the comics, and the episode about Hob Gadlin feels a bit bolted on, but overall the series is a treat if you like the original comic. Expand

I've not seen the whole series, I'm at episode 7, so I might change the review in the next days.

So, first of all, I'm not a hardcore Sandman comic book fan, bareley read it, maybe a few standalone issues, but I'm aware of the story and the characters.

With that in mind, let's talk about the elefant in the room, the casting. I don't think it works, all that gender and race swapping doesn't go well with me. The problem with adopting a graphic novel is, people have a very detailed image in mind, how a character should look. Deviate too much from it and people are upset, it's only natural. But... Are the chosen actors good? Yes, they are!

So, all in all I'd say it is a decent adoption of the source material. I sometimes have the feeling it was actually done panel by panel and line by line. That's good and bad at the same time. Good in terms of staying true to the source material, bad in terms of really adepting it for another media to the advantage of that media. You have way more time on a TV show, you can invest in smaller characters, enhance dialogue... I kinda feel they missed a bit of an opportunity here.

One piece of the story, or rather the characters, that does not work for me is Johanna Constantine. Apart from the gender swapping and a huge missed chance (Neil, we really, really love John!) she has some strong Mary Sue vibes. So I'd say the swap was not done well because it changed the core of the character and that's a no go. From my point of view the show looks good, sometimes even gorgeous! Yes, there is a lot of CGI and it is recogniczable as CGI, but what do people expect these days? The only real problem I had so far with was Gregory, these days creature effects seem to lack a lot. Everything else looks really good to me.

Finally, is it woke? Or is it too woke? I can kinda understand why people are upset, but honestly dudes, the comic was woke way before someone invented the word. Sandman always was a rather odd piece of work with non-binary characters, so get over it, it wasn't changed in that regard. So all in all I enhoy it. I can see ways how this could have been done better, I'm not a fan of the casting, some effects are odd, but it is one of the better adaptations out there and enjoyable!

I was a huge fan of the every 100 years meetup with the gentleman that Morpheus met at the bar and wanted to see more of that story. I will definitely be checking out the comics after watching this and am looking forward to a season 2 hopefully where they improve on the small amount of issues in season 1. Expand

I haven't read the original so I'm judging the TV series purely on its own. It's entertaining and filled with fantasy. I hope there are seasons 2 and 3 to continue the series.

A great and accurate adaption of the comics by the their creator. People complaining about the TV shows "wokeness" have either never read the comics or haven't understood them.

The stories roam between his domain of mystical creatures and the land of regular (and some not-so-regular) humans. Of course, the dual realities blend as the titular character tries to repair "the dreaming" after his 100 year captivity. There are some interesting visuals and fascinating concepts (the Cereal convention is especially bizarre), but there's also plenty of dialogue discussing the concepts and outcomes. The plots are a bit of a labyrinth, so it's necessary to have this talking, even though it slows things down. This epic vision has sufficient elements to keep it interesting, but could use a simpler structure. BTW, there are technically 10 eps, but Netflix dropped a surprise bonus 11th, which includes an animated story ("A Dream of a Thousand Cats" featuring the voices of Sandra Oh, James McAvoy and Michael Sheen) and "Calliope," which explores Morpheus' ex-girlfriend. There's a few Whiteness in this woke crap / cultural appropriation.
Only actor that fits the role is Tom Sturridge.

The perfect Adaption. The character has grown with the time which is fitting since he is an endless. Enjoyed from begging to end. The books hold a very special place in my heart, and I was incredibly leery of it being made into a live action series. ForThe books hold a very special place in my heart, and I was incredibly leery of it being made into a live action series. That being said, I have been incredibly happy with the show and have no issues with the creative choice they’ve made. For anyone complaining about the changes made to characters, those decisions were made by Neil Gaiman. Those changes fit the series well. If people complaining about LGBT+ characters had truly read the books, they’d know very well that Neil’s vision was always progressive. I’ve never seen any adaptation stick as close to the source material as Sandman does, though it does mix up some of the short stories in a way that works well. Expand
