This was fine in my opinion. It wasn't anything groundbreaking or anything, and it delivered nothing more than I expected it to, but it still had an interesting narrative. Recommended for chess fans, but skip if you're not interested, I would say.

She had no interests or passions in her life other than doing drugs and sleeping around with chess guys, and did not even particularly seem to like chess - what she liked was purely winning as it made her feel important and better than everyone else. Other than he brief struggles at the orphanage, everything else in life seemed to fall to her on a silver platter. Maybe that is enjoyable or something for other people, but there was nothing that moved, intrigued, or otherwise made me feel strongly about this series. I did appreciate that for once they refused to demonize the Russians, and instead presented them with class and integrity. But little else was interesting. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unfortunately the show starts out intriguing but fails to deliver throughout the rest of the show. It doesn't use chess, something that many only know the basis of, to give it that thriller edge that other shows successfully deliver on. If they gave more detail to how the characters plan their moves, and use it for the audience to be welcomed in the world of chess would be pretty fun. Instead the show focuses on generic drama troupes and in the end it 's a soap opera than a thriller.

If it's just a drama you are looking for, it's a tad boring as well, since the main character is not likeable and if you're looking for a chess thriller it fails to deliver on that as well.

This should probably just have been a 2+ hour movie instead of a series. It drags out too much at times and there are many mini plots that never lead to anything. A very thin and predictable story, not great writing. It could've been so much better.

Anya Taylor-Joy , from Emma Fame shines oh so much more brightly here, weaving a compelling character with a panoply of emotional looks that range from sultry to cerebral and back again. Moses Ingram, and Thomas Brodie Sangster also shine but really, there are no bad actors here, and thats a credit to the creators as well. Hats off to Scott Frank and Scott Allan for the well crafted scripts and to Walt Tevis for his original source material. A winner!!!!! Expand

"The Queen's Gambit" gets two points for its art direction: it's beautiful and wonderfully evocative of the period. And that's all, because that is all there is to the series.

It's not character-driven: our protagonist is an empty shell, with a flat affect that fails to communicate any emotional engagement with anything happening to or around her. I suspect this is intentional, meant to represent some combination of an obsessive (perhaps autistic?) prodigy and the effects of her tranquilizer addiction, but it simply doesn't work on screen (as it could on the page) without a compensatory conceit like an inner monologue narration, because all we have as an audience is the actual performance. The result is what looks like lazy, uninformed Hollywood stereotypes of a savant and pill addict, with no emotional hooks for the audience to grab. The robots on "Westworld" - literal empty vessels - have more characterization and development than Beth.

As a result, we also get no character motivation for any of Beth's actions. A few times, she's explicitly dismissive of her supposed obsession in dialog; without a countervailing emotional performance, we have no reason to suspect that she is anything other than actually dismissive, negating one of her only two - informed, never truly shown - character traits. I was left wondering why she did anything she did throughout the entire series, and my conclusion was that it was because it's an adaptation of an existing narrative, so TV-Beth does X because book-Beth did X.

Beth's flat affect and lack of intelligible character motivation also render her relationships meaningless. Friends, foes, loss, and triumph all yield the same lack of any response, leaving an audience feeling no sense of consequence to anything that happens (or that we're told happens, because...)

It's not plot-driven: the plot focuses on the rise of a chess prodigy, but we have almost no playing chess, discussing chess, or depictions of our prodigy obsessing over chess. I've seen reviews note that this is likely because a mass audience isn't going to be sufficiently familiar with chess to appreciate particular moves, references to famous games, etc. (I am that audience - I know enough to play legal moves, and get badly beaten by just about anyone), but that's only a hindrance if the CREATORS also know nothing about chess; a more skillful creative team could use that as a way to engage the audience by teaching while entertaining. (And that can be true even if what they're teaching is wrong - consider "House, M.D.", for example, on which at least half the medicine was BS, but was used to engage the audience whether real or not, instead of avoided over concerns about alienating anyone who isn't an M.D.)

We're frequently not even shown important plot beats, instead being told of them after the fact in scenes that jump forward hours or days in time. This tendency is presumably informed by not wanting to actually show chess in our chess story, as well as not wanting to show emotion that might guide an audience unfamiliar with the game.

It's not even conflict- or tension-driven, because there is none of either. This also relates to the aforementioned problems. Beth is apparently a tranquilizer addict, given how many pills she buys and swallows, but this doesn't create any evident problems for her; she doesn't "struggle" with addiction in any meaningful sense. We're occasionally informed that she has financial difficulties, but her stable housing (in adulthood), apparent food security, and plot-necessary ability to travel across the country and even world make these claims come off as blatant lies, to an even greater degree than supposedly working-class sitcom characters living in $20 million Manhattan apartments. There's no real character conflict because there's no real protagonist character to have conflicts. There's no plot-related conflict because we skip nearly every scene that might create it in order to be told what happened after the fact.

Given the buzz about The Queen's Gambit and many of the critical reviews, I'm starting to wonder if perhaps Netflix released two different adaptations of the book in 2020, or if I've suffered a psychotic break. But the likelier explanation seems to be that the accolades are a function of pure projection: by providing a beautiful setting with a cardboard protagonist, the show essentially demands that the viewer fill in all of the missing pieces, which many appear to do with whatever they would like best, and then respond not to what is actually on the screen but what it prompts them to imagine, buoyed by a lead actress who looks odd enough to be notable (Anya Taylor-Joy has extremely wide-set eyes) while still being thin and White enough to be conventionally attractive. It's a clever trick, but a trick nonetheless; if you're looking for a TV series rather than an imagination-projection canvass, watch literally anything else.

Anya Taylor-Joy makes it clear that she has much, much to offer.
She just needs to start choosing her roles better.

She's the core force in this elegant and captivating miniseries, and while the entire production is top-notch, and this would of course be an excellent incentive to watch it, her amazing work is the best reason to delight yourself with this production.

Not all the episodes have the same solidity, but if you see it as a massive 7-hour movie, it's gonna be more easy to keep up with the flow.
And the best of all, is that you don't need to be interested in chess.
I mean, it would be much better if you do, but this is by no means a crucial element to understand or to enjoy the show.

If you have Netflix, this is an excellent option.

All the actors did a great job playing the roles they were given even if our main heroine was mostly a mute just making sounds instead of talking(at the beginning at least) after that she get's a little more sociable and better. The sound quality and song choices were great and good for the given time period , the characters were mostly relatable and well done even if it felt that some of them were put there just to add some misery and cruelty to the bleak reality. The cinematography was 50/50. Some of the scenes were shot and cut really beautifully while other scenes felt like they were filmed by a 5 year old holding a camera for the first time , some scenes felt nauseous only because of the way they were filmed. Now for the chess part they didn't exactly explain a lot of things if you have never played chess in your entire life , also unfortunately they didn't show that much gameplay of the game's only some parts of them which were a bit disappointing. Also one of the projects where the way the story is told seems to be more interesting that the story itself. From the very begining it's somewhat mesmerizing.
Also it's a good thing they made it a miniseries.

A very good series. Made up-yes, propaganda-yes, but still very high quality and enjoyable. And the soviets weren’t demonized which is quite surprising. Cinematography, plot, actors, music, the 60’s stylistics are great!

Muy buena, creí que sería aburrida porque se trata de ajedrez pero realmente me sorprendió. La actriz principal merece ser reconocida por su trabajo en esta serie.

I’ll admit that my knowledge of chess is fairly limited, but the show does a good job of explaining some of the intricacies without over doing it, and instead focuses on Beth’s journey and struggles. The show is beautifully shot and full of great performances (Anya Taylor-Joy is phenomenal in the lead role) and I thoroughly enjoyed it from from start to finish. Expand

And by that I don't mean chess (which is incredibly boring) but the characters who don't come to life over the show's running time. It doesn't help that there aren't any real conflicts either. I just spend 6.5 hours watching a girl learn chess and chew pills like they're candy. As an adult, she is so good at playing chess that nothing can stop her. Sure, Elizabeth has to play some opponents twice in order to defeat them. And there are personal losses, too. But nothing in this show feels like there are any stakes for her at all. She just wins and moves on. So, why does "The Queen's Gambit" feel flat? One example: From one episode to another, Elizabeth just decides to quit alcoholism and pills, in order to win the most important game in her entire life, because she is indestructible. After "Squid Game", this is the second Netflix show that received massive hype when it came out that disappointed me. And both would be way better movies than tv shows. Expand

Some parts of the story felt predictable and the writing could have been better at times.

The acting was good, and most characters were unique and interesting. But I felt that a few lacked dimension.

Overall I enjoyed watching how the story unfolds and while I don't think the show was perfect, it was very fun to watch.

What made it so great is the character is talented yet flawed. Beth (the protagonist) has a very interesting back story that slowly unveils through the series.
I loved her progress and hinting the finesse of chess, it doesn't get into too much detail to confuse the people that are not familiar with the game, but enough to show people who know moves that make sense. The series will make you realise that it's not just moving some pieces on a board with a grid on it, there is more at stake.
I could not fault the series at all... unless its the last 30mins of the entire series. I felt it fell apart (in some ways). I know they could of made the ending better suit the rest of the series, I know could of made it more bitter/sweet and was kinda hoping to see a character return from a few episodes before at the end but didn't. In some way the endign didn't make sense to me. Like how did certain characters band together in a room when they never met before?
Regardless, this was unexpected and was hooked in after the first episode and was amazed on the cinematography and story to match.

It is based on an American novel that was written by Walter Tevis and was published in 1983. This is really a wonderful adaptation. The scriptwriter and director is Scott Frank. Anya Taylor-Joy played the lead role in this movie. This movie is about the nine-year-old orphan, whose name is Elizabeth Harmon. Over the years, she becomes one of the strongest chess players. She has some emotional problems and dependencies. Will these stop her? Will she be the best out of the best?

This series was well received by audiences. The trailer really made me want to see “The Queen's Gambit”. I recommend this series to anyone interested in chess or to anyone interested in watching great series. The characters are highly convincing. This series won two Golden Globe Awards: Best Limited Series and Best Actress. Written by Anastasiia Shystovska

Once you start this series, you will forget about eating and sleeping. It's truly a story of determination, friendship, self-discovery, inspiration, struggle, and triumph. You watch it & feel like the series itself is chess.

If you even don't understand chess, you will still love this series. The character development of Beth Harmon is brilliant. She has a strong background story. Her character has both strengths and flaws which makes her a normal human being like us. She has a clear internal and external conflict.

Anya's acting skills deserve Oscar. The cinematography is brilliant and the run time is just perfect. There were a few but powerful scenes with Mr. Shaibel that hit me hard. It's both compelling in its theme and direction.

It balances the concept of theoretical chess with good strong scriptwriting.

One time I was even impressed how accurate she was expressing her feelings. The only problem for me here is that with each next episode this TV show was becoming less realistic because more and more situations with the excessive empathy from almost every character to the main character were appearing. So at the end I had a feeling I'm watching some kind of typical melodrama.
