Despite the great amount of amazing actors, the plot misses to deliver entertainment. It lacks an interesting story and it becomes excruciatingly boring.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My rating is for the show itself including through season two. A lot happened in season two... but I can't quite tell if a lot happened, or if it's all been filler to set up season three. (I'm trying to avoid blatant spoilers here). Perhaps there were a few too many events that happened in season two, and maybe that detracted from "the main plot"... but I think it could also be argued that those distractions parallel all the chaos going on and being felt within the movement due to misguidance and distraction.

One thing I didn't quite notice until I was done with season two was that at some point I stopped watching the Meyerists as a bunch of kooky idealistic hippies and, in a way, started believing that what they believed was real (or at least normal...ish). The reason I find that so amusing is because like I previously mentioned, a lot of season 2 actually strays from what many critics seem to regard as "the point", which is a focus on the faith itself. Most of the drama in season two would have you believe that it's all nonsense being driven by the ego of men (and women)... and it winds up a bit frustrating, because you all of a sudden want things to be back on point, back to being idealist and true, and not human and corrupt. Basically, you've converted to wanting Meyerism to be real in some way or another, and to overcome these obstacles.

On the subject of belief, one of my favorite moments of this season was when Sam/Abe is talking to his boss about the Meyerists and the boss sort of scoffs at how loony they are, then Sam mentions how "we all" believe that Christ was born to a virgin, and his boss says "yeah, because that's true" (or something along those lines).

I'm very much looking forward to season three and how this man versus faith set up will play out.

I am beginning to learn that maybe there is something to the "sophomore slump" meaning the second season of a show tends to not hit the same peaks as season 1. That isn't to say I haven't like the show, but you can see some changes that should have happened and didn't and some that didn't but should have.

That isn't to say I haven't like the show, but you can see some changes that should have happened and didn't and some that didn't but should have.

I want to say first of all that the acting is just as good, if not better. Aaron Paul is someone a person can identify with even more, Hugh Dancy is becoming more unhinged and the rest just flow together better.

That being said the season was too long. They added three more episodes, but that just made the main point drag way too much. Instead of telling a story the writers had to fill time and that is what made it not as high up on my list. The single biggest plot issue I had was the disappearance of the whole investigating a murder storyline. I realize it is a little bit of a spoiler to say that, but there is absolutely nothing about it in the second season, as if the writers just cut it out completely. Maybe it will come back around in Season 3, but I doubt it.

Pros: Once again Aaron Paul is great, the rest do well in acting. The character and actor for Hawk is just growing on me.

Cons: Sometimes making a longer season doesn't make the show better. Too much filler means it takes too long to tell the story.

Season 2 works to lure the audience into understanding corruption, demands you accept its role in life, and promptly slaps you in the face for considering it. The lessons are harsh and delivered with greater conviction. Guided by strong performances all around, each character feels like they’re living on the edge of a revelation.

Goldberg and her team have a much better handle on both Meyerism and what might draw worshipers to it in season two, and that keeps the rest of the show afloat. But ultimately the show works because it captures the feeling of being enmeshed in something greater than yourself, whether that organization is bound together by faith, by familial duty, or by love.

It doesn’t have enough story to tell. To make things worse, the season has been given an extra three episodes to parcel out its morsels of plot, making an already downtempo drama feel almost catatonic.
