I noticed a lot of the reviews stated that they grew tired of the banal roundtable discussions and the fact that racism was more than prevalent on every episode. I agree to some extent, however, I fell compelled to add that Wilmore only addressed racism as it pertains to black people. He never addresses Hispanic, Native American, LGBTQ, Muslim.....racism. Racism is not a term that pertains to only black people. He even called his book "I Wish They Had Just Given Me A Casino" which as a Native American I found extremely racist on his part. Racism is ugly, hurtful, painful, dangerous and corroding and if the root of it is not addressed on all levels then it will only continue. It might change to focus more on one group than another, but, the essence of it is hate and intolerance. If you allow that to manifest in any way against any group of people (as a whole) then racism will continue and if you make progress with your particular group of people be assured it will just jump to another group and then circle back around to you. Now he is claiming racism is the reason he was cancelled. I object to this - he did not cover racism except from a one dimensional perspective. I also agree that the round table discussions were less than adequate. I gave this show a long, long chance to show me something and it didn't. Expand

This is the most racially damaging show on television. I'm writing this review after finding out this joke of a show will be canceled in hopes that nothing like this is ever made again. A white guy shot a white guy? Black on black crime never gets this much coverage. Muslims are being bothered at the airport? Man, if they were a BLACK Muslim, they can kiss their chances good bye!

Honestly Larry Wilmore is the most racist person on television and they have Drumpf on there right now! Viacom took a good thing and ruined it, set it on fire and pushed the whole thing into a pile of **** The only right choice they've made on this show since Colbert left the time slot is to cancel it.

The show is a poor substitute for Stephen Colbert. Larry is flat and whiny with no sense of comedic timing. His show is incredibly one dimensional, and that dimension in non-stop race baiting. He's basically an unfunny one trick pony.

I use to watch the daily show because it was entertaining and they made honest jokes about the news, but now I don't care to watch anymore. It's not really funny and it is kinda racist. I feel like the change was to sway the presidential election. It's terrible people have to make crap like this to separate this country even more. It's made my family more racist and I hate it.

But even when racial tensions died down for the rest of the news networks, Wilmore just kept going with it. The show isn't funny, the rhetoric is extremely shallow and one sided. Wilmore wasn't the best correspondent on the Daily Show, and he certainly wasn't the best choice for a stand-alone program. This show should not have had a second season, and based on the ratings, should not have a third. Even Trevor Noah, who we all feared would fail as a newcomer has proven to be charming and funny. I have read other reviews where his monologues have been identified as the strongest component of the show, but it seems to me that is the weakest and most superfluous segment.

His monologues tend to cover expected subjects, and, while they may push the envelope when stacked up against Jimmy Fallon, they certainly aren't like his Comedy Central predecessors.

The most subversive portion of the show (and therefore the most interesting), is the panel portion, which is subversive in its LACK of in-your-face aggression. It's also something that we haven't seen in this format. Most comedic panel shows still try to play up the drama by pitting blow-hards against one another to get them to say outrageous or ridiculous things that the host can knock down with wit or base acid. Wilmore manages to pull insights from his guests without being all Bill Maher-y about it.

He's good at this, and he deftly can pull awkwardness onto himself in a way that turns it comedic. What weaknesses there are will, I'm sure, be mitigated by more experience.

To be truly honest, I wish they would jettison the tepid, unremarkable monologues in lieu of dedicating the show to more interesting debate--something we don't regularly see, and haven't seen since Jon Stewart left the network.

Unfortunately, I've found the show is less about humor and more about pushing a political agenda. It seems that Wilmore makes everything about racism or sexism, even when it's nowhere to be found. Now, it is important to note that over the past couple of years the two Comedy Central news shows have changed substantially, but I've found that Trevor Noah has been doing a fantastic job with the Daily Show. I could see how a show like this would be enjoyable if you are in line with the political views expressed, but even then it wouldn't be a comedy show, it would just be someone snidely telling you things you already believe. I dislike how an ongoing theme of the show is that someone doesn't have the right to talk about certain issues because they are not in a protected class (ie. women's issues if you aren't a woman or police violence if you aren't black). The show seems to lack the nuance of a political show and the humor of a comedy show. I guess it's a bad sign when they have Al Shapton on the show and out of the four person panel he seemed to be the most willing to discuss nuanced issues without resorting to the lazy "it's because of racism" answer. If you are familiar with Francesca Ramsey on Youtube, the show is very similar to her videos (which explains why she joined the writing staff of the show a couple months ago).

The other thing that irks me is the "keep it 100" segment. For those who are unfamiliar, the premise is that an online follower will write in a question (usually some kind of "would you rather..." question) and Wilmore answers it (originally it was questions Wilmore asked his guests). The goal, of course, is to answer the question with a totally blunt and honest answer. Often the questions are either inane or set up to get Wilmore to talk about how much he hates Trump. Often he doesn't even answer them honestly, he just says something the crowd wants to hear. One in particular was something along the lines of "if you were stranded on a desert isle like in the film, Castaway, and someone comes to bring you back to the US, but he tells you Trump has won the presidency, would you stay on the island or go back to the US with him?" Wilmore's answer was that he would stay on the island, which was met with applause and the writers awarding him with "100" stickers (meaning they believed he had "kept in 100"). Maybe I'm approaching this incorrectly, but I highly doubt that an entertainer (likely without remarkable survival skills) would prefer to stay stranded on a desert island than return to the US with Trump as president. It seems to me that this answer is the epitome of what would warrant "weak tea" (an indication that one had not "kept it 100").

In summation, it's possible that I'd like this show better if my beliefs were closer to those of Wilmore and his writers (I'm not radical, I'm pretty much a centrist on most issues), but I feel that a comedy show shouldn't be so aggressive in pushing a political agenda even if it is political satire.

I thought that it was alright at first, not great but funny at times. However, I have noticed that the show really preaches an anti-white sentiment, only focusing on racial issues or connecting issues to race, making the show rather stale and repetitive. He speaks against racism, yet only focuses on black issues, which shows that only that group matters.

It was initially depressing to watch how quickly the Larry Wilmore show descended into the most outrageous racism. One would like to believe, that of all people, Blacks would be the ones to say: "Enough!... It stops here! Too many have suffered for too long! Too many have worked for too long to put racism to bed forever! I will not participate!...." But instead, we find ourselves watching virulent hate and racist diatribe on TV that wouldn't ever have been acceptable in even 1955, Selma Alabama. A recent episode featured groups of Black men urinating on the heads of White men who they subsequently burned alive.

But there is epiphany to be gleaned here. By instantly transforming into the same "Bubbas" in pick-up trucks they are so fond of mocking, the folks on the Larry Wilmore show have clearly shown how little difference there is between them and the ultimate foolishness of racist thought. We are Them. They are Us. The main difference being the lack of self-awareness and recognition of their own screaming racism among the panel members on the show. I don't think "Bubbas in pick-up trucks" would be quite so surprised at having their racism pointed out as I suspect the members of the Wilmore show would be.

So, if not Blacks, who? Who will ultimately stand up and say no to racism? I guess that just leaves me. The end of racism, like the beginning of world peace, begins as a personal decision. I say no. I say it stops here. I say I won't participate any more than I'd allow a friend to go unchallenged if he/she was still doing the: **** **** **** that was so much the way of life in America for way too long. As much as I like Larry and Mike, I can no longer lend tacit support to their hatred and racist rant by watching.

I love Larry Wilmore! I'm white and I appreciate the fresh perspective that Larry and his guests and crew bring to this show; especially Mike Yard, who is hilarious. I don't understand all of the racist remarks, but I guess some folks just can't handle a show that has a mostly black cast. They're probably the same folks who want to make the White House "white" again.

I've watched the show several times...hoping hoping hoping it would improve. It's so racial now...I feel he sets the black/white relationship status back instead of forward. I hope the writers head the reviews I see here if they want the show to survive. As it is now, I'm done with it. Besides the race issue constantly in my face, the show is just boring. Sad.

He seemed ok on The Daily Show but I guess that's all credited to the writers. The show just lacks the witty humor that The Daily Show had and I just couldn't get past a single episode. The keeping it 100 or weak tea bit is just so cringe and the stories that the show tries to cover just fall flat in presentation. Just a bad show all around.

No recognition that the issues being discussed are actually important, or even relevant. Instead we're spoon fed painfully un-funny pop-culture references, and absurdist shouting matches that wholly fail to appreciate the gravity of social commentary. The nail in the coffin for me was the recent panel with Bill Nye: a man who is respected as an ambassador for the sciences. Wilmore's impossibly irritating, and uttterly irrelevent staff proceeded to berate him for seemingly no reason. And they in truth insulted Nye, a man that was kind enough to grace their failing show. Stewart knew how to handle issues with class, aplomb, and understood how to crack a joke at the same time. Wilmore's show is a study in painfully lazy comedy with news as a backdrop. It utterly misses the boat on the point of satire, and merely worships idiocy. I wouldn't recommend this show to anyone, especially if they're expecting smart satire. Can't stand the host or most of the guests. It's too radical left, and as a fan of both Jon Stewart's leftist lean and Stephen Colbert's satire of the right, this show is neither funny nor interesting.

They had Bill Nye on there and hardly let him talk, kept interrupting with terrible jokes and with a blatant disregard for the importance of finding water on mars, and science in general.

The entire setup comes across as awkward. Larry Wilmore is at his best with race humor, but he goes overboard and often misses the mark, sometimes cringingly so. John Stewart was one whom despite often disagreeing with, I found to be very funny, genuine, and sincere with his beliefs and opinions. Larry Wilmore is an absolute fraud in those regards.

I don't believe Larry Wilmore has had an orginal thought or opinion that he could call his own in his entire life. Every word out of his mouth seems to come right off the script. A script that feels like it had to have been co-authored by Al Sharpton, Peirs Morgan, and Rosie O'donnell. Its as if The Nightly Show feels its part of a competition to see who can be the most extreme leftist show on TV without getting cancelled. I imagine even the most devout of Liberals cringe at some of the stuff said on this show, thinking to themselves "Please stop, Larry. You're making us all look bad". This all would have been maybe tolerable if only they sprinkled a joke or two within all the bulls**t. How this show came to be on Comedy Central is beyond me, as it lacks anything even slightly resembling comedy.

All in all I give this show a zero. It is the first show ever that when it comes on after another CC show ends, I will lunge across the room faster than I ever knew I could move to grab the remote and quickly change the channel so not to risk giving it a single second of help with its ratings. (I didn't think much of Colbert Report when it first started, but when Stephen found his groove, I started liking the Report as much as Daily.)

Who in the hell is Mike Yard and Ricky Valdez? And why should I care what these unfunny, unknown people have to say? It's really no surprise that they can't get any real celebs on the show. Night after night, it's unknown comedian after unknown comedian sitting on the panel alongside the lame writers of the lame show. I can't believe there are even any 'writers' for this garbage. And to have them on the show night after night with unknown comedians? Come on, is the best Comedy Central can do after 16 years of Stewarts' brilliance? What a gigantic disappointment. The only good guest they ever had was Neil deGrasse Tyson. And no matter how much Wilmore riffs on Cosby, it's still not saving the show for me. Wilmore's Donald Trump impression is so bad, it's beyond cringe-inducing. And that stupid 70's pimp routine he does is about as enjoyable as digging the dog turd out of the crevices of the soles of your boots with a twig.

Larry Wilmore is NOT funny. I didn't like him at all when he appeared on the Daily Show and now this? Wow. Cancel this crap already. I don't mind at all that they're trying to make a 'black Daily Show.' I think the concept has great potential, but Wilmore does not live up to it... doesn't even come close. Why didn't John Oliver (a guy that made me laugh out loud countless times on Daily) get this gig? Oh right, because he's kicking serious comedic ass on HBO.

I created a meteoritic account just for this show. First of all this show is just absolutely horrible. It is just strictly race. Its not funny and it will more than likely be done after just one season. Please do not watch this show. You will be saving time out of your life. Broadcast this dumb show on BET not Comedy Central

His rhetoric gets so ridiculous that its borderline anti-white. Even more absurd is his hatred and misunderstanding of the American South.
Recently, the show provided a perfectly concise example of everything wrong. In a skit, Larry and four of his contributors posed as a handful of heavily caricatured South Carolina state senators having a meeting about when to plan the discussion of when to talk about taking the Confederate flag down. Among these four caricatured white senators (some in whiteface oddly enough) was one black senator who had the only trace of intelligence in the entire group and was shut down by his white colleagues (out of implied racist intent). In the skit, the group decided to meet to discuss when to plan the discussion of taking the flag down in 9 months. In reality, the Republican controlled South Carolina house and senate successfully voted (with a supermajoirty) to take it down only three weeks after the disaster.
In short, this show is full of crap. I love Key and Peele, Colbert, and Jon Stewart, and I really wanted to like Larry Wilmore, but I simply cannot. At first I thought that his material would improve over time but it's only become worse and after four nights a week and so many weeks later this show needs to be put out of its misery. Like so many other people, I created this account just to write this review.

I made an account specifically just to voice my opinion on this show.

This show is soo boring. It gives that feeling you get when watching those commercials about children starving to death or abused animals. It is a downer, depressing, unfunny show.

I initially felt the show was going to need some time to find its voice, as Larry has the goods enough to host a controversially humorous and informative show. Reality is way funnier than recreation. Also, stacking the deck with the so-called comedians they find during the too-short panel segments does not make for good discussion. They are trying too hard for laughs, apparently not aware that real life provides plenty. Figure out how to harness it and you're good. Expand

    - Larry's delivery is muddled and generally off queue. That nervous laugh of his in between bits is annoying and distracting.
    - His material is 99% one-sided, which I think is a turn-off for many. Much of Stewart's credibility comes from his willingness to poke at hypocrisy/injustice, no matter where it comes from. Larry won't poke at issues that are 'generally' supported by his political/societal views (or he does it very poorly).
    - Discussions related to race inequality in this country are very important and relevant for satirical show like Larry's; however, it seems like 80% of the shows are dedicated to this topic alone and for people seeking a comedy show it gets old (from a comedy television show perspective).

Bottom line is Larry's jokes are forced and hardly funny, the show is too short for the format they're trying to execute, and Larry's delivery is simply poor. I think his cause is solid and I want to see him succeed, but I feel there is too much of an uphill battle for Larry to be successful.

    * I noticed that many of the user reviews are one time posters. I think it says something when someone's show is so disliked that it is moving people to open an account on metacrtic just to voice how much they dislike the show. That includes myself.

You can watch The Daily Show, Last Week Tonight, or Real Time and come away feeling both elated and edified--these shows feel refreshingly cogent and are a joy to watch.

Now, we know that these shows tend to slant to the left, but they rarely commit the sin of pandering. There's a certain level of respect for the viewer--issues are discussed thoughtfully and the writers have clearly taken the time to think of interesting and revealing takes. My litmus test for the level of respect these shows have for the viewer has been myself -- I'm conservative, but I still love these shows because they are usually extremely well thought out. They have universal appeal because they are following the rule of good political comedy -- respect your audience, don't pander, make good points.

Now, The Nightly Show seems to have sprung out of the ashes of The Colbert Report, which was itself a show made by taking a character from The Daily Show and giving him a full block of programming. The Colbert Report was funny because while it was usually a little bit lazier than Jon Stewart's block, it was silly and it was honest about it, and Colbert had ridiculous charisma. Colbert has that charisma where you just laugh at everything he says. I feel bad for Larry Wilmore, but he isn't nearly as charismatic as Colbert. At times (particularly when he pushes out a high-pitched "mmhmm!") he's even annoying.

That lack of charisma could be forgiven, however, if the writing wasn't so awful. I don't find John Oliver that funny, but Last Week Tonight is flat-out excellent because it has exceptional writing. Just as an example, Oliver has a bit where he talks about municipal violations for nearly 20 minutes--something as boring as traffic tickets makes for 20 minutes of enthralling programming because it's well researched and damn-well presented. Larry's team has done nothing but pander to the left with lazy, poorly thought out arguments that usually consist of injecting a buzzword and waiting for the audience to cheer or boo. There's no interesting research, nothing new or compelling, and he harps on the same issues every episode. Gay marriage, race, and abortion--every single episode--decidedly "won" liberal issues over and over again so the audience can feel good about themselves.

My overall impression from watching the show for a few weeks now is that it's just lazy. Comedy Central hasn't put the same amount of effort into this show as it has others and it shows so much. This show could be a winner if they stopped the blatant pandering and had some well thought out pieces--maybe get new writers--but for now, it seems like a dud.

Sad to say, but I now quickly change channels after The Daily Show as 'The Nightly Show' isn't funny and doesn't even have any interesting interviews.

The whole panel format after the monologue with uniformed members trying to make jokes was a train-wreck from the get-go . I tried, I really tried, to like this show as I found Larry funny on the daily show. However, Larry's short segments on The Daily Show are not able to be stretched into a 30min show 4 nights a week. Larry shouldn't ignore the race card for jokes, but to have 4x30min shows a week, he should use it far more wisely. Bang on that drum too much and it is no longer funny - just uncomfortable and annoying.

The format is just horrible, the only panelist that ever make any sense always get cut off but the ones who dont…and it's usually a black panel.

The show has no identity, it cant decide weather it wants to be real time, or Black fox news…I can go on and on about how much of a disaster this program is…they got it wrong and I hope they do whats right and take it off the air. I will be tuning out right after the daily show, and turning back for @midnight. Colbert really left us high and dry…I have been watching since day 1, haven’t missed a show but after tomorrow I will no longer be watching…do the right thing CC -10 in my book

Larry Wilmore's April 27 show is easily the best single show I have ever seen on television--and I've been watching TV for 60 years. The humor was Wilmore's own brand of gentle delivery with a razor-sharp takeaway. Brilliant! Tour de Force! A TV Show which tries unsuccessfully to hide hatred behind comedy. Comedy is not an easy art-form, it requires intellect, skill, and the ability to laugh at ones own self. The writers, producers, and host of this show seem to have forgotten that, if that was their intention. It seems more a platform for wallowing in hatred and victimization.

Like Stewart, Wilmore is good at using jokes to cut down overblown public figures, and he isn’t afraid to be self-deprecating. His opening monologue is typically the best part of the show.... The shakiest part of the show during its first week has been the middle panel-discussion segment, which features a mix of comedians and political commentators talking about the episode’s topic.
