Great show to watch this spooky season. It may not be as scary as Mike Flanagan's other shows but the atmosphere and characters keep you engaged. Many may be put off by this being a young adult show but I personally dug it.

I don't consider this a Flanagan show. Something felt forced. It was trying to be both an anthology series and a singular story all at once and none of it worked. There were some scares but nothing memorable. The only really goodI don't consider this a Flanagan show. Something felt forced. It was trying to be both an anthology series and a singular story all at once and none of it worked. There were some scares but nothing memorable. The only really good characters were Anya and Spencer. Amesh and Ilonka had moments. Sandra was nothing but cringe. Everyone else was forgettable. On that note, the best midnight club story goes to Natsuki - who would have been completely forgettable without that story.

The thing about Flanagan that I love is his ability to take themes such as grief, addiction, faith, extremism, mental health, etc. and blend it with horror to a point where the horror stands out and once you realize the theme that's being explored, you realize the genius in the story telling. On the flip side, this show explores the inevitability of our own mortality. It's not ineffective, in face it's an emotionally devastating show to watch at times. However, rather than masking this theme in horror, horror seems to have been needlessly forced into the show. It distracts from the story.

Not upset I watched it. However, at 10 hours, I wouldn't recommend this show to anyone.

Really enjoyed Midnight Club, interesting characters and a great story - the teen drama might put off horror fans

I enjoyed the show. I loved the 90's vibe & anthology style. I'm very excited for a season 2 because a lot of things still need to be explained.

Instead, they point out how HSV is an "STD" and will "stay with you forever," acting grossed out and furthering the stigma that exists. This is despite the fact that the majority of humans are infected with HSV I or II, and its transmission to many people, including children, is not sexual in nature. Don't take my word for it- read the statistics. This old stigma needs eradicating just as much as the HIV stigma. Do better!! Expand

The acting is adequate but not inspiring. There is nothing here that persuades me to expend any of my limited entertainment time on this show. Maybe, if I was bored and had nothing else to do, I might run this in the background while I played a game or cleaned the bathroom, but this show did not capture my attention or interest. There is an entire generation of “writers” in entertainment who lack originality and creativity. Almost every show has the same boring exposition, meandering dialogue and pointless plots. It’s all bland porridge. Expand

Is it just me or does this feel supremely average and, dare I say it, amateurish for Flanagan? Even Midnight Mass had me way more engaged and kept me fairly intrigued every episode but it pales in comparison to Bly Manor or Hill House. ThisIs it just me or does this feel supremely average and, dare I say it, amateurish for Flanagan? Even Midnight Mass had me way more engaged and kept me fairly intrigued every episode but it pales in comparison to Bly Manor or Hill House. This feels like a departure from the previous shows. I’m not sure if it’s just the theme or the casting or what, but it all seems more like a teenage breakfast club with some mystery boxes thrown in that just makes me want to reach the conclusion without caring about how we get there. It’s not at all scary and frankly some of the characters just become annoying after a few episodes and I’d rather not learn more about them at all—even the main character at times. I like the idea of the ‘mystery’ in question (no spoilers) but the writing, dialogue, and acting doesn’t really do it much justice nor does it make me want to keep watching. It feels more like an obligation to finish it because I’ve enjoyed his previous work. Expand

A very boring series. The whole horror was only at the beginning in the form of ridiculous screamers.
Other than that was a drawn-out drama of clichéd characters.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very slight spoilers here. TLDR Summary: Poorly written, boring story that is held up somewhat by fairly interesting characters. You are left hanging as many mysteries are barely touched on.

This show was suggested to me by the netflix AI so I took a chance on it. It was a bit of hell though as the show was a slog, but felt the urge to keep watching to the end because I feel compelled to know how it ended.

First, the showrunners were clearly inspired by Stanger Things. The logo for one. The time period is the mid 90's rather than the 80's (because ST already did that era). The time period adds nothing to the story. Again, they just wanted a Stranger Things clone but with pagan/witchcraft. The characters are actually pretty interesting but the episodes are mostly boring. This is the 1st show that I've actually fast-forwarded through so I could find the next point in the main story. Too much fluff - boring interactions between the characters, boring ministand (spoiler) one episode is a complete ode to a (spoiler) dead character. Acting: There is one character that does a great job (the one that dies ironically). Other than that, the acting was subpar.

Every episode is punctuated by mini standalone stories that reminds me a lot of that Nickelodeon show back in the 90's called "Are you afraid of the Dark?". Each of the characters tells a scary story every night as part of their role in the Midnight Club. Most of them are poorly written and boring so I skipped most. The only interesting one is the serial killer story that is obviously inspired by that old film Psycho.

The main plot leaves you a bit unfulfilled. The climax towards the end of the season turns out to be pretty anti-climatic, and it was a bit predictable.

The show assumes we are more invested in the characters they we really are. Yes, the characters are pretty good - the best part of the show but for the most part I wasn't that emotionally invested in them. One of the characters ends up dying (ironically the best actor's character) and a whole episode was spent paying tribute to them, but I fast-forwarded this one as well.

So many pointless little interactions, plot points. They were clearly trying to stretch this one 10 episodes.

Also, what's up with the strong language? This shows feels like it's for teens, but so many F-bombs were dropped. Felt out of it's element.

Seems like this is a first for this director. And a debut for all these mediocre actors (except one who is actually pretty good - the dead one).

If you read this I'm a bit surprised as I'm not the best writer, but hope it was helpful.

Definitely aimed at a younger crowd but still greatly atmospheric and engaging throughout. Season 2 is a must.
