God awful. When will get back to entertainment just being entertainment instead of mixing a bunch of modern-day politics into it.

The writers don't seem to know what Elves are, Galadriel is a terrible leader that treats soldiers under her command with total disdain. She has has an incredibly unoriginal set of character traits where she is rebellious, defiant, strong and independent while men dismiss her opinions bla bla bla. I'm expecting any more strong female leads introduced will have the exact same character traits. Please can someone come up with a new character type? These self inserts are not interesting, inspiring or relatable in any way.

It doesn't deserve any marks, no-one involved seems to care about fantasy and they probably laughed at nerds and geeks while growing up for loving something so silly and childish as wizards and magic. I say this because of the total lack of attention to the small details that make a world feel real. It's just so soulless and sterile as scene after scene of nothing comes and goes. And the worst thing is how the character tells the viewer how you are supposed to feel about them. All of their intentions and feelings are explained to you the viewer because you can't be trusted to figure it out for yourself

It's sad because these actors will never know if they were hired for merit or for their color/gendersex. This is a soulless creation based not on canon but a series of disjointed notes that would serve better for an mmorpg or a tabletop fantasy book setting. Many of the characters dont resemble the characters we know from the movies.

Black elves and dwarves? I mean come on. Does EVERYTHING have to be woke these days?? Whats wrong with elves and dwarves being all white like they're supposed to be? Elves are known to all be tall, white, long haired and beautiful while dwarves are known to be hairy, bearded, short and very stubborn but honest and loyal, but also all white.

Whats next?

Stick to the movies and books. Its also too boring somehow, not nearly enough epic battles and that gritty darkness and sense of dread and horror we are used to from the movies.
for example when the nazgul came for the first time, i was absolutely terrified.

dont ruin the show!

The dialogues are inconsistent, some of them are good, some of them are extremely weird/nonsensical. The story has several logical flaws and only a few interesting arcs so far, but if you don't think about it too much you can live with that. Overall I'd say: you can clearly see they put a lot of money into this, but ultimately it feels a bit like Amazon itself, empty and soulless. Purely on the quality I'd give 4.5/10, but I have deducted two point because Amazon is actively censoring IMDB/Rotten Tomatoes reviews and ratings (I saw reviews and ratings disappearing with my own eyes). That's where the greatness ends. And now for the terrible... The story is uninteresting. The writing is cliche, bland and predictable. The acting is mediocre. The battle and fight choreography looks very staged and amateur. I didn't mind most of the modern day updates, like diversifying the skin colors, but the gender inequality and pro-girl-power plugs were so portrayed with such over-used scenarios and contexts that it felt un-original and lazily implemented.

Sadly, the only way to enjoy this show is with dubbing set to a language you don't understand, and by skipping half the action sequences.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a fan of the books and the PJ movies, i really wanted this to be good, but it isn't.

This modernisation of Tolkien doesn't make sense at all, it's a story written a long time ago and was made to be a mythos for england and was inspired by norse mythology.

The acting really isn't anything special, kinda meh at best.

The visuals are good, which is to be expected with this kind of budget (bit to bright for my taste).

The actions of the characters don't make much sense in my head (like Galadriel jumping of the ship, which is basically suicide) and i don't even know why i should like any of them.
Heck, i still don't have any clue about like 90% of the Story, which viewers should have after a ton of trailers and two whole episodes.

Dialogues are kinda dumb and not very good.
(You haven't seen, yes i have, no you havent', yes i have,...)

The lorebreaking just makes me cry aswell.
You could just change a few names here and there and there wouldn't be any Tolkien related stuff left at all, it really is that far gone from the books.

Didn't enjoy it at all, was bored all the way through.

Big disappointment

They've taken one of the greatest high fantasy literary worlds and turned it into a tacky, b-rate dungeons & dragons-esque generic fantasy series with cringeworthy dialogue that looks and feels like it's been cast by a bunch of Los Angeles suburbanites. I'm not just disappointed this show is such a let down, I'm genuinely amazed at how such terrible writing made it on to the screen considering the significance of the intellectual property and size of budget with which it was made. From the beginning, the Amazon Rings of Power series wanted to put itself on a par with Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. Amazon does not live up to this claim, paid for with 1 billion dollars. Money is not everything. So I'll start with the positive aspects:

-With the money, tremendous and partly even coherent images were created. Valinor and Khazad-Dum look very good. One wishes for slower camera movements to absorb more details. And here we come to the limit of the short CGI sequences: They are just facades. (Khazad-Dum was a bit more detailed due to the longer scenes.) Still, it's no comparison to the companions' journey through Moria (Khazad-Dum) and Gandalf's arrival at Minas Tirith in the original Lord of the Rings films by Peter Jackson. -The images in the series are accompanied by good music. Sauron's theme sounds intimidating and threatening - great! At other points, however, the music falls short of expectations. An example: Everyone will still have the atmospheric sound of the Shire of the Jackson films by Howard Shore in their ears. The ancestors of the hobbits of the Amazon series have their own theme. It's quite cute, but it doesn't invite to dream like the masterpiece of Howard Shore.

-The acting of Disa and Durin in the presence of Elrond in the second episode was a bright spot. Unfortunately, the imposing images described at the beginning can't hide the negative aspects of the series.

Weak dialogues and partly very weak storytelling (our main character jumps off the boat in the middle of the ocean with no chance of rescue and of course she gets lucky when she meets the remains of a ship's crew). On the whole, I have to admit to myself that the presentation of the story around Galadriel (our main character) is so weak that I don't even know where to start. The actress can't do anything for the narration. In the films of Peter Jackson, Elves were rehearsed choreographies. Posture, elegance, and expressiveness. In two scenes that I personally noticed, the actress of Galadriel loses face. She plays a millennia-old, high-born Elf who has seen a lot... bad Quote incoming (you have not seen what i have seen) and she seems unfortunately simply - human. Driven by revenge for her brother without putting the greater good in the foreground.

Conclusion

If you love Tolkien's books and appreciate Peter Jackson's first trilogy, then you probably won't have an easy time diving into Tolkien's world with Amazon's new series.

This is my review of The Rings of Power which I posted on Amazon that I'm sure will be deleted.

As a person who read all of Tolkien's books, who owns all of Peter Jackson's movies and watch them over and over, what have you done! All Amazon had to do is to stay true to Tolkien's characters and story and you would have had a winner! Why did you spend 1.5 billion on this disaster.

Now as it's easy to blame the fans for your failure, but the truth is your writers blew it and you have no one else to blame but yourselves. How hard is it to listen to fans because it is the fans who pay and support your products and your company.

After watching both episodes, I spent last night telling fellow Tolkien fans to watch both episodes to judge for themselves, so I'm not surprised that you've had 25 million viewers because people just love to see a disaster in progress. Once word of mouth spreads it's all over for your views.

As a Prime member for decades, I'm no troll or bot so if this review gets deleted, I will not be surprised after all I see you've disabled your rating system.

Maybe it's time for your writers to read some William Goldman writing books.

Or what about a journey w no supplies and no horses in dresses Elrond and groomer Kel take that looks like it will take weeks only for groomer Kel to turn back alone and in a dress dejected like a scorned lover. Or what about not caring about any of the characters because they skipped thousands of years and didn’t even show the big bad battle properly in the beginning? It’s so superficial it’s insulting. Instead we get great lines like, ‘you haven’t seen what I’ve seen’
The writing is atrocious.

This show has some incredible CG landscapes and cities. That said, the very depiction of the characters and the actions that are credited as being valiant is an absolute inversion of the world Tolkien creates. Galadriel changes from honorable and wise, as she should be at thousands of years old, to impulsive, vengeful, and spiteful of authority. The Harfoots are shown as simpletons and the daughter is spiteful of their tradition and worries treating them with a similar lack of respect. Arondir abandons his post and defies his orders. His love interest, Bronwyn abandons her child to go on a potentially dangerous adventure. Every human is depicted as a bigot, every male as toxic, the world is darkness. It is very much the opposite of what Sam said, “There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for.” Expand

So long as visuals and diverse casting is met, everything else can fall by the wayside. This move toward "inclusiveness" based on reality and co-opting someone's work to fit someone else's agenda is, and has always been, at the expense of fiction. Fiction is what it is because it doesn't need to fall in line with reality. Reality can influence fiction but exists apart from fiction, and fiction apart from reality. If this weren't the case, we'd be discussing non-fiction. Fiction is not non-fiction.

People often seek fiction to leave behind reality, even if only for a moment, because our real world problems are not what we want to focus on. We want to see another world's problems from another person's perspective, and come out of the fictional world with new insights.

What's beautiful about fiction is that events, people, and places in fictional worlds are unique to the creator. They might sometimes be based (in varying levels) on reality, but they're different from reality and different from one creator to another. Tolkien's world was based on medieval Europe, but is a place with all colors of skin, all levels of height and weight, all varieties of accents and speech, but a (general) separation of peoples for various reasons. They do come together to accomplish great things, but they are not normally intermingled together.

Forcing those things beyond the creator's vision muddies and sullies the story that was built up around those things, and will almost always invariably result in bad reviews by unpaid critics (your average viewer), especially those who were great fans of the original works. You can chalk it up to racism, sexism or some other -ism, but that's mostly fiction. The reality of the matter is that you co-opted someone else's vision to suit your own agenda, and people don't like that, regardless the social or political gang colors they wear. Diversity of actors, in terms of color, gender, or sexual identity is perfectly fine. Take stories that already include the diversity you're looking for, and build that world. Or create new ideas with the amount of diversity you're looking for, and build that world. This is only as difficult as creators want to make it. If it's "too hard" to build something new with the ideas you're looking for, that's on you. Not the story or the world that needs to be built. Build your own worlds, or use worlds that closely match what you're looking for in a story. Don't steal from others and pretend for, whatever reason, that it's "okay" or "this is what he would have wanted". You're mixing up fiction with reality and all you'll end up with is a broken, poorly reflective imitation of reality and truth, and if it's not true reality, it's fiction. Co-opting TV, film, and streaming services are living in fictional worlds while destroying other people's fictional worlds. And that's why you'll continue to see bad reviews on stories that ventured too far beyond the creator's vision. At least what DC and Marvel have is alternate realities, that have explored variations in timelines and people. These companies and creators did that. So it's easy to incorporate all the possibilities across universes. Tolkien's world does not have alternate universes, and this world of make-believe is not his vision anymore. It's become someone else's agenda.

First off, the anti-woke 0 & 1 star comments are off their rocker and are a distraction to the real criticisms of the show. The pushback against these reviews is valid.

Now on to the review... It's boring.

The visuals and music are epic, especially for a TV show, but what is on screen doesn't match except at the most shallow level. The show does a bad job of setting up an overall context for what happens. There is little to drive the story forward except a general, "Yeah some people think something bad will happen sometime in the future". That's made even worse because most of the people in the show don't share, or act like they share, that view, and make a good case why they shouldn't.

The show would have been better off if it had started by showing the growing threat, and given a reason why the main characters should know about it. That would have given a sense of urgency that was lacking in many scenes.

Another thing the show should have done was to show more of the conflict that shaped the main characters. Many are deeply driven to act the way the do, but the audience has been given little reason to feel what those characters feel. Even when a reason is given for one character, it is undercut by the fact that reason happened so long ago. The result of all this is that the actions of the main characters feel like character flaws instead of a heroic drive.

I enjoyed also the beauty of simple things, the manners of the language, talking about how to enjoy things like light, feels, the use of methaphor....it's nice.

But there are to many bads in the show to give it a good grade, to put it in one word, sadly it's woke. Seems like the enemy all the time is society, the characters are settled in their little universes, elves, man, hobbits....the characters want to do things and the people close to them let them know that is not wanted, they must quit their dreams and join the fold, which they do not and they are righteous to do so, even when they're not. Galadriel may as well and up triumpht for pusuing the evil and not giving up, but she does not come relatable at all to me, she's just stuburn and entitled.

You can see also interacial relationships everywhere and mixed color people everywhere, and it just puts out of place, at least for me as a fan of the books. The world of Tolkien is vast, the regions of Middle Earth that wee see on the movies and in this TV show are really a small part of the world which would be the equivalent of Europe in our world, to the East and south there are plenty more regions in which other men live. I could get people from the East visiting and being there, but the show presents it like the settlements have mixed etnicities as a normal thing, and, again, it puts you off, does not feel natural.

I would feel the same if the show took place in the East for example (which I would welcome to see, a story of the blue mages for example), and suddlendly you see the cities filled with white people.

And seeing woman dwarves with no beard..... The story so far does not catch you anywhere. You can pass the time watching it and it's obviously selling you that something is going to happen, Sauron returning and all but I don't really care much for any of the storylines.

Laslty, if you know about the books, you'll see that the show is quite different, the map and events from the first age are wrong, the whole Sauron story is wrong (he was not haunted for example and considered to be good), the king of the elves was not so blind and careless, he was actually the one thinking a danger was coming, the elves did not need permission to go back to Valinor, they did not have elves watching people accross middle Earth, no things falling out of the sky, Mithril was already being discovered, the gate of Kazad dun did not exist yet, the one with dwarf friend was Celebrimbor.....Many many things that are wrong and they are like that because the showrunners chose to, and they also chose to use original characters instead of canon ones, which they are not in the show.

Honestly, there's nothing wrong about doing something new and original, but if you want to do that, do something entire new, don't take an already made story and change it to something else. It seems that you only do that to exploit the already stablished fame of that art and get an easy cash grab.

This show isn't merely bad -- it is offensively bad, and therefore deserves the lowest possible score of 0.

The show deliberately subverts Tolkien's Middle-earth into something that reflects Amazon's own vision. Some of the changes were made for obvious political reasons (race-swapping characters), but other changes have no rhyme or reason (why are the elves short haired?)

Elves are such a quintessential, memorable part of Tolkien's Middle-earth, but instead of the beautiful, long-haired elves described by Tolkien, this show gives us LARP elves that are ugly or old, with short hair and bad teeth.

I also need to highlight how cringey the dialog is: It is the worst sort of "As you know, Bob" expository dialog I've ever heard. In order to inform the viewer, characters are constantly talking about things that everyone in the room already knows. Even worse is the linguistic register, which sounds like some schoolkid trying (and failing) to write in a "Ye Olde" Tolkienesque style. Other problems include a main character who is an unlikeable jerk, slapstick comedy that feels out of place, and badly choreographed fight scenes with obvious wirework.

Other reviewers have commended the beautiful scenery and VFX of the show. I agree that the show looks good, but that does not change my 0 rating. I can easily find even more beautiful scenery and VFX -- without the horror of seeing Tolkien despoiled -- by watching a nature documentary or browsing fantasy paintings online.

Totalne rozczarowanie, zawód i smutek jak można było tak zmarnować taki potencjał. Płakać się chce jak bardzo zgwałcono świat Tolkiena

Expensive visuals. Great marketing. But that’s about it. Nothing exciting if you’re not a fan of Tolkien. Disappointing if you are… Watch “The Boys” instead.

Exactly as bad as your thought watching the trailers. Bad acting, bad directing, bad storytelling, bad everythings except dwarfen beards.

The nerve of amazon calling this Tolkien-inspired, cringe-forced diversity, awful acting, and flashy pointless anime combat, hope this does not succeed or the future of Loved Franchises is doomed.

Bland, boring, one-dimensional characters. The main protagonist is exceptionally unlikable; even though it is "based" on one of the most beloved characters from the LOTR. This is a travesty of biblical proportions. 5 seasons of THIS? Who are the viewers going to be? Inmates and people in mental institutions? This rightly deserves a 0/10. Expand

It was terrible. "Why does the paper float but the rock sinks? Because the rock only sees down"

There is little to like about this show so far, and that little is mostly contained within the landscape shots. Also there are some scenes of actual good acting in this show, but more on that later.
Now for the negatives:
1) The story is sometimes hard to follow due to some neglected plotpoints. Example: The elves consider returning to Valinor a great honor but it is never explained why they don't all go back at once (in the books its because they were banished but this goes unmentioned in the show).
2) The actors are really struggling with the script. A script which includes more pseudo-philosophical methaphors that don't work half the time instead of some genuine relatable dialog. I remember being captivated by the interactions of the Fellowship in the LOTR-movies but here its just boring and hollow...and the actors seem really uncomfortable saying those lines.
3) The character designs. Did you ever notice that in the PJ-movies each realm (Gondor, Rohan, Imladris, Lorien, Dwarfs, Haradrim, Easterlings) has a very distinct style of clothing and hair? Like the people of Rohan are tall with unkempt and brighter hair-colors and a brown-green color scheme and the gondorians are rather dark-haired with more silver-blue clothing. In this show all styles are mixed across elves and men and even withing those cultures which does not give a strong sense of identity to them.
4) Celebrimbor looks way older than Galadriel eventhough he is a lot younger. Weirdly enough some elves actually look rather old, despite the fact that they should possess some form of ageless beauty. The weird hairstyles do not help in that regard.
5) Just to emphasise this point again, the dialogue is just weird. Characters are saying lines instead of talking to each other. Also some appear to be braindead: e.g. Galadriel finds a clue to Sauron still being around and EVERYONE dismisses it. Even Gil-Galad who sanctioned her very mission to look for said clue just brushes it aside. People are complaining that Galadriel is unlikeable in this series, but I kinda can relate because every character she interacts with is just a douche for the sake of it.
