The criticisms of the Tolkenians are ridiculous! we must consider this series as an alternative universe, where they do what they want, even rightly differently from the books

It feels like going back home to Middle-Earth. I have my nit-picks like Galadriel starting so annoyingly prideful, but I think her character development will play out in future episodes. I also wish that the prologue was longer. Regardless, none of that affected how amazing the show is. I look forward to seeing more Expand

It has just been modernized!I really don't understand the negative reviews! I watched the first episode as a Lord of the Rings fan and am very pleased with how the character of the literature and especially the films has been preserved. It has just been modernized! If the series were just like the movies, it would be boring! I personally think that no matter what Amazon would have produced, people here would have complained and cried about it. That was clear in advance! And then the new variation in skin tones seems to be a main complaint. I'm losing my faith! Lord of the Rings is a work of fiction, detached from the bonds of the earth. Just because skin color is often tied to a specific culture in our world doesn't mean it has to be the case in this series. Humans are not bound to a particular cultures because of their physique, but because of history. The world of Lord of the Rings has a history of its own though, so why would there be **** racial segregation??? And just because it was more monotonous in the previous films and books, luckily it doesn't have to be the same in newer works! Art just keeps evolving!

If you can't handle that, at least don't try to spoil the fun of the series for others! Almost everything I see here is driven by hate. Keep the hate for yourself, I don't need it! I'm not a native English speaker, but I still hope I was able to make my point clear.

I went into this expecting it to be a let down based on all the early negativity from some quarters. I was majorly super impressed by this. This is very well done - the sound track, the acting, it feels like something Peter Jackson might have done, the creativity of the scenery and the inspired sequences. Yes, liberties are taken with the source material. Then again, the source material and the second age lend themselves perfectly for it. Regardless: the production values, the sweeping vistas of Valinor and Middle Earth. The acting. I was immersed and entertained. I even put up with Lenny Henry as a hobbit! Well, Harfoot. The haters gonna hate I guess. I was somewhat apprehensive myself at first. But the racist vitriol in some of the reviews! This is Tolkien in our firm for all humanity to enjoy. As Tolkien''s Saga goes: it is timeless, but adapted to be more inclusive. It does not bother me. We live in the present, not in 1950's Oxford. I only wish they would throw all that cash at an anthology series of The Silmarillion. That would be my dream show! Keep going Amazon! Expand

I’m happy as a Tolkien fan to have the chance of witnessing this new adaptation. It will have flaws (Jackson’s movies were perfect and flawed) they will deviate from the source material (Jackson’s movies did not follow the source material either) but it will be amazing, just as the Jackson trilogy. To all true Tolkien fans, do not heed these haters, sit, relax, and enjoy!

I think that in the end, the creators did end up creating a very compelling and impressive first season, even if I did take issue with some of the decisions. Many of the elements did stand out to me, the music, production design, and visual effects were all very impressive, and helped to sell this is as a part of Middle Earth. I was surprised to see how much stylistically Rings of Power took from the Peter Jackson films, but I think this was a good choice as it makes it feel familiar, even though this show is by a different studio and directors. I think the storylines are overall very well set up, and provide variety to the tone and settings. There are quite a few changes to the lore, but I feel that most of them were justified for fitting the story into a television format. I hope with future seasons Rings of Power continues to improve, it's not uncommon for a show to really come into it's own in the 2nd season and I think that's a very likely outcome here. Expand

The show is definitely not perfect but it met my expectations and brought fantasy TV to another level for me. All the people complaining and hating without constructive criticism are just missing on the fact that they have the opportunity to revisit middle earth in a glorious way. The craftsmanship of this show is off the charts. Personally, I like a slow paced show that takes it's time for world building and character development, which this show gave to me, though I'll admit some scenes got dragged out. Wasn't such a big problem for me, personally. Overall, I'm eagerly waiting for season 2 after that great finale and I'm pretty confident it will be a step up. The story, places and characters have been woven, and the finale gets us to a point in the storyline where every plot is focused, and moving forward. Expand

The problem here is more systemic than just one show, though it definitely shows blaringly on Rings of Power given the sheer scope of the shows budget and marketing.

Fundamentally, this has to do with arrogant elitists who are self obsessed with "re-creating" society according to their own ideological concepts, and in so doing are making the intentional decision to take over and bastardize established cultural mainstays for their own purposes, it's a pure power move. This has absolutely nothing to do with Tolkien or providing an actual quality product.

Top! Expand

There's nothing about this show that strikes me as politically charged. With that out of the way, I'd say this is definitely worth a watch. The set design and overall aesthetics is breath-taking. It's awe-inspiring the landscapes, architectural design, costumes, everything! They obviously put a great deal of work and thought into this and they tried to include all the important bits from what is known of Tolkien's works.

However, there are some changes that some might not agree with. In these situations, as long as it's not such a large change that it is a completely different story, I don't mind. The question that always arises for me is simple: Is it a good story and enjoyable?

To both, I'd say unequivocally, yes. Very much so. The characters are fantastic and you get to see the pieces moving about where they were only talked about in books/stories/movies/etc.

The casting is top notch with very little that I'd disagree with or have changed. The dialogue is also excellent.

My ONLY real problem with this is that the show's pacing is a bit slow. They could've easily accomplished telling the same story in half or even a third of the time. It falls prey to consistently wallowing in it's own set design with gratuitous panning shots and setting up of scenes that were, in essence, already set up.

This is a pretty minor 'crime' however and in all honesty, if you enjoy the LOTR movies or the books, this will be enjoyable for all excluding contrarians. (And when do you EVER please them, really?)

7.5/10 with only a bump up to 8 because simply put: It was very enjoyable.

P.S. One last note: Ignore the people who say it doesn't 'match up with lore'. Not every single aspect needs to match a book. If the story is enjoyable and entertained you while managing to accomplish the overall result of the original story, then shaddup about 'lore this' and 'lore that'. Just enjoy it on it's own merits

Great production. The photograpy of the series is brilliant, it has changed the scale and the way to watch fantasy series. The actors are very good, all clearly embrace their roles and knew how to bring to fans new and old their roles.

About the story itself, it has a rhythm tempo, increasing in grandeur and events near the end, very much like what happens in the books of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.

Yes, there are changes/adaptations of the Lore de Tolkien. But, I liked the adaptations, they are very well made and necessary, in view of the copyright acquired only from the Second Age, appendages and Third Age.

It's sad when a work like this ends endlessly, I'm already looking forward to the next episodes.

It's a story about unique, at times unlikely and even more rarely unfortunate friendships between characters. It's a story about pride, greed, deception, and fantastical marvels to be achieved. It's the best place to get a glimpse on Valinor, the Undying Lands, Lindon, Eregion, Kha-za-dum, Numenor and Mordor to name a few - placed that weren't exceptionally well if at all covered in Peter Jackson's films. Amazing acting in place by the actors of Galadriel, Durin, Elrond, Disa, Adar, Aldir and many others. Underappreciated gem in the TV history. A must see! Expand

The production value and plotting are excellent, and the casting is on point. Morfydd Clark as Galadriel provides one of the best performances in a fantasy role in a long time, and will likely be seen as her breakout role for years to come.

As someone who grew up reading everything Tolkien, this show has reawakened my love for Middle Earth in adulthood. For the first time in decades, I find myself wanting to dive back into Unfinished Tales and the History of Middle Earth, as the show has done such a great job of putting a new spin and making a coherent narrative out of the various drafts and letters written by Tolkien about the Second Age.

The fact that this show is clearly planned to occur over several seasons, with a strong commitment, is also clear, as the plots we saw in Season 1 are sowing the seeds for future growth and development. Hoping there isn't too long of a wait for Season 2!

I will elaborate further on my thoughts in this review after the season finale, but I am tenatively giving it a 7/10.

So far it has surprised me how interestingly they've covered parts of the Second Age so far, I am particularly excited by who I assume is going to be a Blue Wizard as they are characters I have been longing to see depicted on the big screen. I find it really exciting to see stories written for characters who were otherwise very empty in Tolkien's writing, among them being Galadriel.

The negative is that the Galadriel/Numenor point of view so far has been less interesting, I find myself just wanting to see more of the Hobbits or Dwarves. Some thing are pretty cliche, the ending of Episode 7 was pretty corny for example.

Whether I drop the rating or not will really depend on the identity of The Stranger. If it is Gandalf as many suspect, it will drop incredibly as that topples the current balance of creating something new and retaining what Tolkien established.

What we have is literally multiple blockbusters production values poured ad nauseum into this series. However, that aside, it actually has a bare boned plot, with characterization that is as straight forward as it is. In comparison to the more low key, House of the Dragon, it pales in term of that.
