No not perfect, but puts viewers back into the world and wonder of middle earth. Not all the characters will be loved by everyone, but the magic is there. One word: EPIC.

Although I might assume Tolkien have intended his books and his imaginative world would have been visualized as in this series, but I think even he would not have imagined it could have been this great. The series is well casted, character development well thought out. The overall feel of the authentic Tolkien world experience have been wonderfully captured on screen both with CGI and wonderful story telling and screenplay writing. Even the orcs have personalities, which in the trilogy movie by Peter Jackson the orcs were depicted as mindless beasts, in the tv series they actually have personalities of their own. There are liberties taken to add a diversity of actors from different ethnicities, but that didn't bother me and didn't do the story wrong, as Tolkiens world is fantasy, nobody ever said the different places belongs to certain ethnicities, as like in our own world it would be logical that there a diversity of races and ethnicties. And furthermore all the actors were not placed there only to add diversity, they did a wonderful job depicting their roles! For me this is the epitome of storytelling and I am eager to watch more of this! Expand

I’ve read the hobbit and the lord of the rings books and thats it from jrr so maybe I’m missing something but I really loved it. Im no fan of wokeness and I’ve read so much of this being woke but I can’t see where? Costumes good, music good, characters likeable…sure Jackson’s lord of the rings will forever hold a special place in my nostalgic heart but this show was great and I look forward to more! Expand

Excellent writing, acting, and cinematography. All the bad reviews are just whining nerds that are angry that it's not a one-to-one translation from Tolkien. It's an excellent, and entertaining show with incredible production value.

I'm here for the Goosebumps!

Wonderful imagery, storytelling and music. Even though it is more of a "saga" so far and less raw than the LOTR movies, and differs from the original Tolkien writings(which even LOTR did BTW), I feel like it still delivers a true Middle Earth experience with the same world, imagery, ideas and cultural differences as I grew up to love. I love especially the music since it isn't a copy of the LOTR score but still has a similar feeling. Screw the criticism and just enjoy a good, EXPENSIVE show! If I'd want to criticize I could but I'd rather go on an adventure and see where this goes.

I'm hooked and I want to be.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The production value and plotting are excellent, and the casting is on point. Morfydd Clark as Galadriel provides one of the best performances in a fantasy role in a long time, and will likely be seen as her breakout role for years to come.

As someone who grew up reading everything Tolkien, this show has reawakened my love for Middle Earth in adulthood. For the first time in decades, I find myself wanting to dive back into Unfinished Tales and the History of Middle Earth, as the show has done such a great job of putting a new spin and making a coherent narrative out of the various drafts and letters written by Tolkien about the Second Age.

The fact that this show is clearly planned to occur over several seasons, with a strong commitment, is also clear, as the plots we saw in Season 1 are sowing the seeds for future growth and development. Hoping there isn't too long of a wait for Season 2!

It's a story about unique, at times unlikely and even more rarely unfortunate friendships between characters. It's a story about pride, greed, deception, and fantastical marvels to be achieved. It's the best place to get a glimpse on Valinor, the Undying Lands, Lindon, Eregion, Kha-za-dum, Numenor and Mordor to name a few - placed that weren't exceptionally well if at all covered in Peter Jackson's films. Amazing acting in place by the actors of Galadriel, Durin, Elrond, Disa, Adar, Aldir and many others. Underappreciated gem in the TV history. A must see! Expand

There's nothing about this show that strikes me as politically charged. With that out of the way, I'd say this is definitely worth a watch. The set design and overall aesthetics is breath-taking. It's awe-inspiring the landscapes, architectural design, costumes, everything! They obviously put a great deal of work and thought into this and they tried to include all the important bits from what is known of Tolkien's works.

However, there are some changes that some might not agree with. In these situations, as long as it's not such a large change that it is a completely different story, I don't mind. The question that always arises for me is simple: Is it a good story and enjoyable?

To both, I'd say unequivocally, yes. Very much so. The characters are fantastic and you get to see the pieces moving about where they were only talked about in books/stories/movies/etc.

The casting is top notch with very little that I'd disagree with or have changed. The dialogue is also excellent.

My ONLY real problem with this is that the show's pacing is a bit slow. They could've easily accomplished telling the same story in half or even a third of the time. It falls prey to consistently wallowing in it's own set design with gratuitous panning shots and setting up of scenes that were, in essence, already set up.

This is a pretty minor 'crime' however and in all honesty, if you enjoy the LOTR movies or the books, this will be enjoyable for all excluding contrarians. (And when do you EVER please them, really?)

7.5/10 with only a bump up to 8 because simply put: It was very enjoyable.

P.S. One last note: Ignore the people who say it doesn't 'match up with lore'. Not every single aspect needs to match a book. If the story is enjoyable and entertained you while managing to accomplish the overall result of the original story, then shaddup about 'lore this' and 'lore that'. Just enjoy it on it's own merits

I think that in the end, the creators did end up creating a very compelling and impressive first season, even if I did take issue with some of the decisions. Many of the elements did stand out to me, the music, production design, and visual effects were all very impressive, and helped to sell this is as a part of Middle Earth. I was surprised to see how much stylistically Rings of Power took from the Peter Jackson films, but I think this was a good choice as it makes it feel familiar, even though this show is by a different studio and directors. I think the storylines are overall very well set up, and provide variety to the tone and settings. There are quite a few changes to the lore, but I feel that most of them were justified for fitting the story into a television format. I hope with future seasons Rings of Power continues to improve, it's not uncommon for a show to really come into it's own in the 2nd season and I think that's a very likely outcome here. Expand

All the people complaining and hating without constructive criticism are just missing on the fact that they have the opportunity to revisit middle earth in a glorious way. The craftsmanship of this show is off the charts. Personally, I like a slow paced show that takes it's time for world building and character development, which this show gave to me, though I'll admit some scenes got dragged out. Wasn't such a big problem for me, personally. Overall, I'm eagerly waiting for season 2 after that great finale and I'm pretty confident it will be a step up. I liked the way the show was built even though there were some pacing and storytelling issues. It fits the Tolkien universe well enough, given time compression requirements for the story.

Great production. The photograpy of the series is brilliant, it has changed the scale and the way to watch fantasy series. The actors are very good, all clearly embrace their roles and knew how to bring to fans new and old their roles.

About the story itself, it has a rhythm tempo, increasing in grandeur and events near the end, very much like what happens in the books of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.

Yes, there are changes/adaptations of the Lore de Tolkien. But, I liked the adaptations, they are very well made and necessary, in view of the copyright acquired only from the Second Age, appendages and Third Age.

It's sad when a work like this ends endlessly, I'm already looking forward to the next episodes.

I always have the books and legendarium to satisfy my love of Tolkien and is what I prefer above anything else. But this show is fun to explore and gives an imaginative perspective of Tolkienania that feels true to his spirit while giving me things to rethink some of my own entrenched ideas and imagination. All I really hope for at this point is to see a version of Tom Bombadil to show up somehow next season. Expand

The problem here is more systemic than just one show, though it definitely shows blaringly on Rings of Power given the sheer scope of the shows budget and marketing.

Fundamentally, this has to do with arrogant elitists who are self obsessed with "re-creating" society according to their own ideological concepts, and in so doing are making the intentional decision to take over and bastardize established cultural mainstays for their own purposes, it's a pure power move. This has absolutely nothing to do with Tolkien or providing an actual quality product.

I will elaborate further on my thoughts in this review after the season finale, but I am tenatively giving it a 7/10.

So far it has surprised me how interestingly they've covered parts of the Second Age so far, I am particularly excited by who I assume is going to be a Blue Wizard as they are characters I have been longing to see depicted on the big screen. I find it really exciting to see stories written for characters who were otherwise very empty in Tolkien's writing, among them being Galadriel.

The negative is that the Galadriel/Numenor point of view so far has been less interesting, I find myself just wanting to see more of the Hobbits or Dwarves. Some thing are pretty cliche, the ending of Episode 7 was pretty corny for example.

Whether I drop the rating or not will really depend on the identity of The Stranger. If it is Gandalf as many suspect, it will drop incredibly as that topples the current balance of creating something new and retaining what Tolkien established.

I’ve read a couple of the books and watched all of the movies therefore, I consider my opinion to be of some value on this matter. I have been waiting for this series for a long time now and I have to say I am not disappointed on it. The story is intriguing and not a typical plot that is 100% predictable, I can say it’s actually had me on the edge of the sofa more than once. Really wondering what is going to happen in the story and genuinely intrigued about the motives and desires of the characters. They are complex enough to make you feel like they are real, they have their own agenda but at the same time have loyalty. The story is complicated enough to keep your interest without making you want to pause and rewind which can sometimes happen with sagas. It has the right amount of drama, thrill, mystery, fantasy, adventure and even a bit of romance (without being cheesy). Expand

The production values are stellar and it shows. No more short charging ala Disney, with great effects = less running time. What we have is literally multiple blockbusters production values poured ad nauseum into this series. However, that aside, it actually has a bare boned plot, with characterization that is as straight forward as it is. In comparison to the more low key, House of the Dragon, it pales in term of that. However, it is still a good watch and near the end of the series, it does pick up on its last quarter. Expand

Review after Ep. 6:
The biggest hook of the series is the visuals. Especially the design of orcs, various armor sets, the Haarfoots and Numenor is just terrific. Often times the series hits that LotR feeling with epic landscape shots and well cut montages. Another highlight is the dynamic between Durin and Elrond which is very reminiscent of Gimli and Legolas. While many feel the dialog to be cringy, I do think it delivers that Tolkien feeling quite well. The story takes its time to develop, with a bit too much time spent in Numenor (especially ep. 5 feels a bit redundant), but I still think the pace is adequate.
The biggest downside is the issue of certain developments feeling rushed. You're meant to believe the damaged friendship between Durin and Elrond to be fully mended, when actually not enough time has passed for that to happen. Or you're meant to believe the chancellor's son and Elendil's daughter falling in love, when in actuality they just met. Other times it feels like certain scenes are left out and you're expected to connect the dots yourself.
All in all it's a great watch though and I'm excited for each new episode.

Don't let the childish behavior of review-bombers get in your way. It's disheartening to see so many people looking to spite the show for reasons based in anger.
I went into this also with reservations, but I've found myself warming up to the series and enjoying it (though, yes, the first 10-15 minutes have some terrible writing, I'm thinking of you "stone and ship"). Visually it brings out much of the magic and splendor of Middle-earth, and while the story might be a bit slow, I don't mind taking time to get anywhere with the excellent soundtrack of Bear McCreary (the composer of God of War) lifting you along the way. Sure, it is made by Amazon and is at times inconsistent with Tolkein lore, but neither of these detract from the series as a show or experience in itself. Also, Durin is a mood and I love his character.

The NYT said on multiple occasions that, obviously, hardcore fans might object to some lore "interpretations". That is true. But there is a professional problem with the Rings of Power TV series story and writing. The bad pace, the dull story idea (no spoilers), and of course, how Galadriel, who is supposed to be a few thousand years old, behaves like a teenager which makes her unbelievable, in regard of her age. The graphics are great. But if you compare the writing, even the jokes, to a film like, say, Fargo, you'll notice why film critics complain rather about the writing alone. So, overall, it is okay. Seeing all the locations of the show in their primes is something as a fan I’ve always wanted to see. The characters of Elrond, Durin, Halbrand, Disa and Elendil are the main standouts. With special recognition to Elron, Elendil and Durin. Galadriel as a character is in line with her description in the unfinished tales and her arc looks to be a slow burn into who she later becomes by the 3rd age. The Harfoots are written in a way where you can see their similarity to what would eventually become Hobbits

The show looks amazing. Visually, probably the best thing ever put on TV. This includes vistas, effects, prosthetics, cinematography etc. Not much more has to be said.

In terms of plot, the intro episodes are a lot of world building. If that’s your thing this is going to hit for you. If you want to kinda just get straight to the action then the slow burn might not be your thing. The show is weaving essentially a part of LOTR history that didn’t get a full novel. More so notes and key events and dates. So all the in between are being written for the show. I don’t think anything has been changed more or less than how the films did the novels. And what they have added, fits in the universe well. All in all, as a LOTR fan since the late the early 00s this show is awesome and fits right into where I keep the movies. If you’re overly strict on being *exactly* like the book or an impatient viewer in the beginning you’re selling yourself short.

The excitement and suspense is what's driving this show. Character development is solid and the cast members perform believable, and engaging, roles. The fight scenes revealed so far are unexpectedly more disturbing than what was seen in director Peter Jackson's films. Parental guidance is recommended for sure. The visual scale of the show is very realistic and breath-taking. The Elven Kingdoms of Lindon and Eregion; the subterranean Dwarven realm of Khazad-dum; the Edain kingdom of Numenor; and the overall beautiful landscape scenery; all completely stunning, and marvelous, in their own ways. The stunning imagery will have you admiring what the show-runners have presented us. Bear McCreary's musical score is spot on and can become very moving in many scenes. I'm completely sold on this show. So far so good. And despite some deviations to Tolkien's lore, it seems the show-runners and writers are doing the best they can with what rights they have to Tolkien's Second Age source material. Much of the lore is still there, while even the creative liberties capture the spirit of Tolkien's writings. I'm looking forward to more episodes. From someone who has been a lifelong Tolkien fan, and approached this series with the highest level of caution, I was impressed! My expectations were exceeded. Expand
