They used the old trick to acquire the rights on the Earthsea author Ursula K. Le Guin. They promised her much creative influence, an advisor position and Lord of the Rings screenplay / co-writer Philippa Boyle while refusing to write it down into the actual contract. When they had the rights they ignored everything. Phillipa Boyle was replaced and they ignored everything Ursula K. Le Guin pointed out. She said something like “The producers had no understanding about the books. They wanted to use the name Earthsea, some scenes and put the on the generic and meaningless plot about sex and violence”. I think that is the most fitting description you can get. Fans and critics mostly agree about this. Then there is the white washing. Do you know how hard it was for the author to established a diverse cast in her books and market them back then? It is basically a unique attribute of the Earthsea novels as the author wanted something different. When I first watched it I did not know the Earthsea books. I thought it was unremarkable and had a generic plot with some good moments. You can watch it but it will be fast forgotten. Years later I found out how horrifyingly slaughtered and white washed the adaptation was. I was shocked and thought that something like this should not be possible. With this in mind I can only give a 0/10 rating even it I don't believe in such ratings as I refuse to support betrayals of source materials. Even without evaluating this or ignoring the source material it is a weak series an at most a 2-4/10 if I be generous. I will however not criticize the cast as they have done nothing wrong and I see no misfire here. Overall a prime example of slapping a name on something really different. Expand
