Another great idea poorly executed, just angst from the get go. Conflict and arguments are constant. Nobody smokes, no ashtrays on tables, all clothes are perfect and clean, no garbage in the streets, perfect hair, on and on... The suspension of disbelief has to hook itself onto something, but not here. It's just torture to watch because they could've done so many cool things with the show and what they chose to do is so incredibly melodramatic. People are comparing this show to 'Mad Men' and that is really unfortunate. What made 'Mad Men' fascinating was we saw inside the advertising world. While this show takes place inside a studio not a lot of time is spent making movies. People are comparing this show to 'Mad Men' and that is really unfortunate. What made 'Mad Men' fascinating was we saw inside the advertising world. While this show takes place inside a studio not a lot of time is spent making movies. Instead there is all this time spent by the protagonist weeping over his dead wife. As viewers we have no connection to this dead character so the emotion on display is just awkward to watch. Also, something that really bothers me in period pieces is when they show cars and they're gleaming and clean, like they just got out of a museum (because they were on loan from a museum for the shoot). Seeing everything so perfect and glamour during THE DEPRESSION makes this show more of a fantasy than 'Game of Thrones.' Men are wearing suits in LOS ANGELES and don't even sweat - they're calm, and cool and dapper all the time. Give me a break. The studio system era is such a fascinating time in Hollywood history, particularly its cruelty toward female and minority talent. Yet is any of that explored in this show? Nope. It's about some high-powered white dude with too many feelings. Expand

'The Last Tycoon' has an amazing ensemble cast, but the story feels to unsure of itself. Despite its high production values, the story cannot surpass its defaults, sometimes being too boring to follow.

I enjoyed the story. I know that it is a sugar-coated view of the time, but it is as enjoyable as a 1940's musical - I want the happy ending. More time spent on how the studio systems operated would interest me.

Beautiful, sumptuous series. Just fantastic storytelling... a wonderful escape to a different time. Romance and drama, wonderful characters. The costumes and sets are gorgeous. This show has it all! #SaveTheLastTycoon

Wonderful story, great actors, fantastic costumes. No blood! No cheap action. A story for fine souls.
Noble and wonderful! A story you will not forget for a long time.

Amazon’s Tycoon is the TV equivalent of a great beach book: a page-turner with larger-than-life characters, set in a glitzy, gossipy world of secrets. I watched the entire season over a few days, mostly because I was having too much fun to stop.

Thought-provoking and melancholy, like all good F. Scott Fitzgerald stories, The Last Tycoon delivers a good summer watch. ... All this said, The Last Tycoon has taken some critical heat, and not without cause. It has several unsparkling passages and weak spots.

The flaw in this visual and stylistic gem, however, is that the plot beneath all this polish does not contain much in the way of human significance or honesty for a viewer to grab onto.
