This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Halfway through this third season and I'm surprised at how clever and hilarious the writing continues to be. Based on the trailer, I thought this show would have jumped the shark by now, but it turns out it was just a poor representation of the season. Elizabeth is a hysterical character, and the relationship between the two mains is much more complex now that it's not just all-out war between them and they actually love each other. The actors portray a believable chemistry which is absolutely still volatile, which adds to the humor. I'll be interested to see where the rest of the season goes and will update this review if it doesn't turn out to be as great as the first two. Expand

This is bawdy, anarchic fun, still as smart as it is wilfully anachronistic. Huzzah!

The third instalment in the saga of The Great is history at its most horrible – and most enjoyable. As Peter himself might say after a large plate of pheasant in grape sauce: huzzah!

Fanning and Hoult are as winning as ever, and the series wastes no time diving back into its playful retelling of one of Russia’s most famous monarch couples.
