The central mystery in The Gone is OK, but the series is elevated by the Māori storyline and the backstories of the two cops investigating the case.

Though the script sometimes stumbles, there are also enough moments of wry humour and resonant truth to keep the whole thing more than merely watchable. If you need something else to tip you over the edge, there’s the scenery too.
