This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gone is the lost the plot cult madness of Season 2, but "The Following" is still an imperfect watch. Kevin Bacon continues to carry the series, now also acting as Producer. The FBI may not be as inept as they were in Seasons 1 & 2, but they still don't instill much faith in terms of catching the guilty (Joe is behind bars and yet to make an appearance and Mark is a weak antagonist). The show does still have the ability to surprise and is still bloodier than almost any series except "Hannibal". Whether it has the lifespan story wise for a Season 4 remains to be seen. Still not for the squeamish and still bordering on guilty pleasure territory. Worth it just for Bacon. Expand

This show really has gotten just horrible for sealsn 3. There's nothing left for the show, they should really just end the series and give the fans some closure.

Hard to believe that The Following couldn't improve upon the trainwrecks of Seasons 1 and 2, but they did it and officially cemented this show as one of the worst ever. The implausible and predictable plot turns continue, but are even dumber than they ever were. [For entire series] An unbelievably ridiculous, dumb, so repetitively preposterous as to be laughable excuse for a show which really is just capitalizing on sadistic violence perpetrated by cartoon quality 2 dimensional cutout robot characters. That's not because they are in a cult, it's because the dim witted talentless writers of this travesty skipped out of school and went to Hollywood where they found the even lower toads masquerading as executives at Fox. These morons try to pass off the same absurd implausible nonsense of someone somehow against all reason breaking into and hiding in high security places and jumping out at the victims in shock… over and over and over and over. Then there's the idiotically phony escapes to get out of a fix… over and over and over and over and over. Does Kevin Bacon (an otherwise good actor) not read the scripts with any kind of oversight of the overarching ludicrousness of what he is asked to do over and over and over and over? It's as if the jackasses at Fox told the retarded writers, "No no it's okay the audience has seen this all before 10,000 times and usually done better, the graphic violence will keep them tuned in." Someone should stab these slut whore purveyors of sinister scum the same way their stupid evil incarnate characters mind numbingly, predictably, graphically do in every episode thus helping to further degrade our culture in the process! This show is a menace to society.
Yet it's a hit, and shamefully I watched all three seasons so far. That's it though!

We don’t even get away from those awful homages to Edgar Allen Poe that used to stud the show’s Joe Carroll scripts--the new season contains murderous rhymes with terrible scansion such as, “While you lie/More die.” Written in blood, of course.

The cast is actually quite good, including some interesting additions in the early going.... But the best thing now would be to provide fans some closure, while bringing The Following--and the killing--to an end.

Bacon works hard trying to sell depressingly heavy-handed material, but The Following seems poised to remain one of the most unpleasant watches on television. [6 Mar 2015, p.74]
