I should have heeded the red flag of Taylor Kirsch being in this…but I didn’t.

The premise is set up well…the budget is big…then around the middle it turns from gritty limited series into nonsensical action thriller. There are so many cheesy 80s style action scenes, it turns into a laugh fest. I won’t get into it any more deeply…the last thing I’ll say is by the end the main characters start using US soldiers as props…boring their vehicles, guns, using them as a taxi…it’s actually really funny.

Even though we weren’t completely turned off by Taylor Kitsch’s performance, his presence in The Defeated transforms the show from something intriguing to something that could either get really good or go south in a hurry.

The unrelenting gloom is meanwhile likely to strike a winning register with fans of Scandi noir (The Defeated is from the producers behind Scandi classic The Bridge). There’s little humour or light relief. But The Defeated serves up a new twist on the Second World War and the beginning of the Cold War, and weaves in a compelling mystery to boot.
