TV doesn’t get much better than this. It has an engaging narrative with a ton of great characters in an interesting world, the voice acting is incredible, and the puppetry is unbelievable! It’s one thing to make a movie with all muppets, but a whole TV series I don’t think has ever been attempted, or at least not on this scale. I’m a big fan of the original movie and this show gave me exactly what I was looking for! I’d dare say it’s better than the movie. I’ll be the first to say that the story of the movie makes no sense and the characters are weak. This series completely fixes those issues while keeping the best elements of the film. This show is DARK. There’s TONS of scary parts and characters are killed off like it’s going out of style! It’s like muppet Game of Thrones! This series also has reverence for the Dark Crystal books and comics, unlike the Star Wars movies, which was really awesome to see. Overall, this is one of my new favourite shows and I can’t wait to see where they take it next! Expand

I enjoyed the series greatly. It was wonderful how they kept the same design style from the original even though it was made over 30 years ago. I thought it was a worthy successor to Jim Henson's Dark Crystal.

A masterpiece of creativity. It feels like something straight out of the 80s (the good 80s) but at a level of achievement never reached before.

As a fan of the original, I was looking forward to getting answers...instead I got far more questions. While I will give it credit for trying to establish a rational for the original, I also have to point out the movie felt like they came up with too many intertwining stories and left several unfinished. Critics calling this a masterpiece are wearing beer goggles, but just for the fun of it...it is worth watching once. Expand

I know it's a massive amount of work, but I'm so looking forward for season 2. Dare I say it, I would be totally fine with an actual remake of the movie as a season 3. That's how satisfied I am with what the Henson team came up with this show!

Dark Crystal: A of R is entertainment right out of the late 70s, just a notch or so better than Fraggle Rock. Do not be mistaken and don't be fooled, this muppet show is for young pre-teen kids and their parents; it's simply not interesting to anyone else. It would've helped a bit if the production were fully animated and not muppet-based, but the real barrier to general acceptance/popularity is that the story, values, and characters are really aimed at pre-teens, it's just too simplistic overall. I found "Niko and the Sword of LIght" and "3Below" to be more engaging for all, not just pre-teens. (originally posted IMDB 10/2/19)

Pros: + the creators did an excellent job expanding on the fictional world of Thra + fantastic creature design and voice acting for most characters + well written dialogue + well written plot (except for the last 3 episodes)Pros: + the creators did an excellent job expanding on the fictional world of Thra + fantastic creature design and voice acting for most characters + well written dialogue + well written plot (except for the last 3 episodes) + pacing was good (except for the last 3 episodes) + surprisingly good soundtrack (though nothing compares to Trevor Jones!) Cons: - not enough character development (I know this is a very tricky balancing act with so many characters) - not enough time spent with the Gelfling resolving their petty prejudices/biogtry and finding ways to build alliances - too many scenes with oozing/spraying of body fluids, and even a scene with a Skeksis pissing in public (WTF?!) - the collector character was gross with super annoying voice acting - the last three episodes (8-10) were a nonsensical mess - nitpick the Gelfling named Rian looked too much like a young Mark Hamil, I had to remind myself that no this is not Luke Skywalker! LOL! Synopsis:
As a big fan of the original movie (I saw The Dark Crystal a few times as a 11 year old) I was excited to hear about this series though when I found out it was a prequel I was concerned. I was curious how a war between the Skeksis and the Gelfling would play out and how the eventual genocide would occur. I thought that this addition to the story would almost certainly deserve an R rating (since it would have to be truly dark and horrible) but to my surprise...no PG? This was a mistake. To be honest if it wasn't for the last three episodes I would have given the series (miniseries? continuing series?) a 10/10. I will elaborate below...SPOILER WARNING! Didn't the emperor say that the Ascendancy was banished from the basement of the Crystal Castle and that allowing them in would have led to their corruption due to the darkening energy emitting from the rift in the ground? Would that not have been a better way for the Arathim to be transformed into the Garthim (vs the disgusting and ludicrous frankenstein like fusion of a dead Gruenak to a dead Arathim)? But really the down hill slide started with the idea of the super weapon the Dual Glaive when the real super weapon was the cooperation of the Gelfling clans into a fighting force?! (Was it not Eisenhower the one who stated that "cooperation wins wars"?) Why wasn't the importance of the Gelfling putting aside their petty differences to fight a common foe elaborated on more fully (though the shared dream fast hosted by Aughra was amazing!)? The General character looked off from the beginning (silly overbite) and if it wasn't for the Chamberlain killing him at the end I never would have guessed that he wasn't the same General as presented in The Dark Crystal...why do this guys? The end battle was ludicrious the Skeksis are a cowardly people who never would have engaged in battle let alone in melee combat. As far as battles are concerned the action was disjointed and absurd (what is it with Hollywood's fascination with swords?) not to mention too tame. If your going to show war, show all of the horrors not some goofy dance with no substance. The Jim Henson Company please note: The place to make major missteps is NOT the ending! Episodes 8-10 ruined the whole experience. Too bad because otherwise The Dark Crystal Age of Resistance was brilliant!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is the most unique, innovative piece of art I have ever laid my eyes on. It has earned my personal score of 10, and for good reason. The writing kept me engaged the entire time. The voice acting and puppetry work involved made me feel emotionally attached to the characters. I was basically left in wonder the entire time watching it... For how this production was even made, and for how the story was going to unfold.

The darkness and intensity of this show is also much appreciated. The creators didn't fear to hold back from having too bizarre, or too violent of scenes for their viewers to see. They kept it real. Accurately representing the original ideas from the movie in 1982.

Over all, the momentum of the story line and brilliance behind the camera work, puppetry, voice acting, art, directing and everything in-between has earned the score of 10. I don't know what else to say, other than the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. Personally, I've seen the original movie when I was young kid, and was never really a huge fan. I liked it, but I just thought it was a bit creepy and funny since I was too young to judge. After watching this series on Netflix, I now have HUGE respect for The Dark Crystal. Can't wait for Season 2!!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was a really great show! I was curious about the movie The Dark Crystal since I was a child. I watched the original movie and liked it pretty good. It was my kind of movie; weird and different. When I heard of a show coming out, I was hyped for it!
The puppetry was really great and obviously improved over the years. The characters are very inspiring and each has their own unique personality. The fantasy world is so creative, and I like it because it's unlike the regular with elves, dwarves, dragons, ect. Although the storyline is wonderful, there's way too many deaths of characters in just one season, and a lot happens in each episode. A little too much, and it's a lot to progress. I wouldn't really consider this for small children since some scenes can be terrifying (such as the draining of gelfings and other violent scenes). Augrua, the Mystics, and the Skesis have great emotional expression, but the gelflings just need a little more expression to truly empathize with them. The action is amazing and the actors/actresses perfectly match the character they voice. I really, really hope and look forward to another season. But I know the show won't end well since all the gelfling died off before Jen and Kira (from the original movie) made everything right.

Every time the Skeksis appeared on screen I was pulled out of the story and found myself thinking: Why is this so stupid? The Skeksis are non-threatening, 1-dimensional caricatures of evil. Their presence, complete with slapstick shenanigans and evil voices, serve to deflate all tension from the story and make the heroes (the Gelflings) look like complete morons for letting themselves become subjugated to these losers. Yes the show is beautiful...but you can't blindly give this show a 10/10 when the main antagonists are so "stupid" (there is no other word for it). The show is worth a watch just because it is something different and you can feel the love and care that was put into the design...but it pains me to say that this is not the masterpiece you are looking for. Out of all theA must watch fantasy masterpiece. Yes, masterpiece! I originally started watching this when it launched, but only made it through the second episode when I was distracted by His Dark Materials and Carnival Row. What a mistake. Out of all the new fantasy series(even the Witcher), this one blows them away. The only fantasy series standing over this is The Lord of the Rings trilogy. This show is just oozing creativity. The puppetry is simply fantastic with it's highlights of C.G.I. here and there. The camerawork is phenomenal, it's some of the best I've ever seen in a movie. There was pure love and care put into every second of this film, and it frickin' shows! There were so many times while I was watching the series that my jaw was dropping at how beautifully framed the shots were or how the lighting was. The costume design is so well thought-out. There are so many small details to notice in everything on every set and on every puppet. The story reminds me of a Legend of Zelda type adventure with Rian being a Link kind of protagonist. The story isn't overly convoluted or confusing, but it's just easy to enjoy. I think this series is going to age wonderfully because of that reason: It's just so easy to watch and fall in love with. My main gripe with this fantasy series and all of the other fantasy series is that they have no intro at the beginning of each episode. Seriously write a catchy theme song and roll some introductory credits so we can learn the names of the characters and important areas in the land. This review is getting to long so in short I rate it a 10/10, please watch if you're a fantasy nerd like me. Expand
