This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is so disappointing how network television take a science fiction premise, with so much potential, and turn it into an obvious, rehashed story, that drains away all the possibility of exploring new ideas and new storylines. Rushing to fall back on the same old tropes (a mother's love for her child trumps all, the bad guys are already here and in positions of power) does not make me want to watch this show. For some stupid reason I forced myself to watch the first episode until the end, stupid because I hoped it would get better. It didn't. Expand

Did anyone else catch that the plot is identical to Hulu,s Future Man....but this story is “serious”? I had to laugh when I heard about the Apex vs. regular human war/genocide angle. I’m willing to tune in for a few more episodes......the story has promise. I’m just hoping they break out of some of the stereotypical writing/acting the premiere gave us. At this point - a solid “C”.

Exactly as others have described it. A wannabe serious story recycling plots of other shows. Wants us to think it is better than it really is. Pass.

Too much bashing of sci-fi shows here by critics and users. Yes, it's not realistic in the way a drama would be. That doesn't mean bad acting or writing, it means we are taken to a place we are not familiar with. Thank goodness for shows like this as a contrast to the endless stream of dramas.

This show has a great premise. The pilot episode is well-executed, giving enough to show exactly where it is and where it's going. Very good reasons to stay with this one.
Natalie Martinez is a good casting. I look forward to seeing what they do with her characters. Overall the cast did a good job of conveying the story which comes with a dark edge.
Great to see a show being brave and going for something new in this genre.

Handsome and engaging pilot episode, Pacing was great in exposition. The underwater "crossing" scene was spectacular.--both visually beautiful and mysterious. The coastal setting is also gorgeous. Looking forward to more episodes but also know this genre of television rarely survives on broadcast television, regardless of quality.

Yes, this is as poor as you feared it'd be. An excellent premise sabotaged by poor casting, poor acting, poor directing, poor screenplay, etc. Also, there's a very obvious studio effort to address diversity, so much so that's it's utterly distracting. Though it's created, written, and directed by men, it's very empowered woman oriented with white guys being the chief villains, so yeh, the studio must've leaned hard on them to shape the show in this manner. There's also all kinds of plausibility problems from the way the police and homeland security set up and manage things, it's just atrocious. Such wasted potential. Expand

this show should be given a minus score: I want the 40 minutes I spent on this drivel of a sci-fi show back! Stupid plot, atrocious acting, lazy dialogues. This is like a 1990's TV show! Come on!

This show has a great plot, great actors and I look forward to watching it every week. But as usual they just shove more and more reality shows down our throats and remove any good show from all the networks. I mean how many bachelor, dancing, singing surviving, etc. reality shows do we really need. They are increasing at an alarming rate. When I have decided to look at the first season THE CROSSING I already knew that the series were closed. The first series really impress, action is dashingly untwisted. The plot begins to develop promptly. And then is closer to 5-6 series development per se stops and the plot literally marks time. And looking at all this helplessness the main shortcomings of series become visible at once. Here at all nothing is told about the world of the future, people from the future differ in nothing from usual (so in nothing that they have all same as well as at us, for example clothes). The season in general comes to an end is torn off, without bearing any desire to watch the 2nd season. However It should be noted acting of Steve Zahn. It is a pity that the series haven't realized the potential. Expand

The pilot for The Crossing is reminiscent of "Lost" and "Wayward Pines," signaling great potential for the new series.

It may be merely gesticulating at parallel ironies as opposed to exploring and exposing them. But that’s the nagging part about evaluating this all-too-ordinary feint and an extraordinary story. Because that the first episode hints at the drama’s aspirations to be and do many things at once. And this dilutes its sense of necessity.

It is watchable, even diverting television; but it is definitely good Zahn.
