Sep 6, 2013The Americans stands on its own as a great drama, but it is simply fun to revisit a time in history where the world seemed so etched in stone. How we have changed...maybe.
-
Dec 16, 2015I have tried diligently to like this show but it's just overwrought, boring crap. The characters are annoying, the plot tedious, and the acting uninspiring. It's shot in this depressing monotone that makes it very difficult to watch. Perhaps one of the most consistently overrated shows of all time.

Apr 24, 2013Love this show!! It's fantastic! Excellent acting, Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys are amazingly good. The script is extremely original and well written.
-
Jun 8, 2013People who think this is like the Homeland are mistaken. I just praised this show for having a great twist and great action. The best action show in years.
-
Apr 2, 2014I like the premise and the possibilities. Unfortunately, this like many "retro" shows is that the writers think we have been saying "Awesome", "Seriously", "Amazing" and countless other phrases since 1920. I wish someone who was ALIVE and speaking in the 1980s would review the writing so that I would not be so distracted by the dialogue.

Jul 20, 2015Bad casting blows a good premise, especially the gay lead. Who do they think they're kidding? There is suspension of disbelief then there is just onscreen stupidity such as this show features trying to pass that actor off in this concept!
-
Sep 18, 2014The Americans prove again that if you have a good script, great cast and pitch-perfect direction, its a recipe for success. Any John Le Carre fan would love this show-a no gimmick spy thriller where real-life spies live their lives through uncertainties and dangers that lurked in every corner during the Cold War! Can't wait to see the second season.
-
Feb 18, 2015What a wonderful show. It sets in the 80ies and could be described as a docu-fiction. Real historic events are setting the scenario for the life of KGB sleeper spies in the US.
My russian partner watches because of the excellent Russian language they are using, but we both stick to the show because it is well written and full of suspense. -
Mar 24, 2015One of my favorite shows Brings back memories of the early eighties when Reagan was president. The different lives they portray while playing the all American family is exciting.
I have to admit I thought the first season was better but things are picking up -

Apr 1, 2016I really like The Americans, but season 4 is quite disapointing so far. I waited for ever to see how they were going to react to the daughter's **** but they keep dragging it out

Jan 30, 2013Brilliantly written, acted, and directed. Russel and Rhys are perfect in their roles, and the dynamic between their characters is excellent. "The Americans" is a top tier, prestigious show, that only comes around once in a blue moon. It will fit in perfectly with shows like Homeland, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Justified, and Mad Men.
-
Jan 31, 2013I disagree with some of the reviews below. This show is not like Homeland at all, Homeland and The Americans have different plots (Homeland is about the CIA, The Americans is about KGB officers). I think that if you give the show a little time, you will find that it is an interesting show and is very enjoyable. The performance of the actors is amazing as well. This show is definitely a must watch.

Jan 30, 2013Excellent pilot. Russel and Rhys are excellent, as is Emmerich. The first ten minutes are extraordinary, and while the rest of the episode fails to match those opening segments, it's still a great start. Easily the best new show this year, and I'll be looking forward to each episode eagerly.

Feb 19, 2013This show present a unique concept. The casting and acting are very good perhaps I am biased towards actors who are mostly unknown (beside Keri Russell, but she more than makes up for it by playing a totally different character from her other roles) and not cutesy. On top of all that 80's nostalgia what's not to love?

Jan 31, 2013Overall a good show so far. It is an episode one so we will have to see where it goes from here. Not quite as strong as the Shield, Sons of Anarchy or Justified. But still pretty good.
-
Mar 20, 2013I would like it better if the episodes ended with cliffhangers. The plots each week seem to be self contained pretty much. It took me a while to wrap my mind around the fact that they are cold hearted killers. Kerry is so hot I wish the guy was hot too. Homeland is more exciting.

Feb 21, 2013Really good plot. The last episode d r a g g e d a little at the end. Can't wait to see what else they have in store for this show. However, I don't think this show will ever be as great as Homeland. Will continue to watch anyway.
-
Oct 5, 2013Hands down, one of the best TV shows of all time. This is a show where clever people outsmart each other, unlike Breaking Bad, where you can mostly bet the characters to do the wrong thing.

Feb 5, 2013Maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind for the pilot, or maybe I was worn out from watching all 13 episodes of House of Cards, but I couldn't get through this first episode, especially when they started with the flashbacks. Glad so many people like the show.
-
Jan 31, 2013Weak show a version of Alias meet Homeland without the good parts. Russel and Ryhs are flat and not believable and Emmerich scares the audience with every appearance on screen. All in all a must miss.

Feb 28, 2014I've started watching this show somewhat by chance, reading some reviews on Metacritic.
Well, I really get enthusiastic for doing it! I don't want to speak about the storyline because, you know, it'll take too much time; but I just want to give you a tip: watch it and you won't regret it! -
Mar 2, 2014I watched the pilot episode, and I thought it was a great show. Unfortunately, at $3.49 (CAD) per episode on iTunes, I won't be watching any more episodes unless they are released on Netflix. Whoever set that price is pretty greedy. I wouldn't pay any more than $0.99 per episode for any TV show.

May 25, 2018The Americans is part of The Golden Age Of Television. In the spirit of John Le Carre it shows the immoral corrupt insanity of the spy game that threatens us all. It is strongly character driven and it is part of The Golden Age of Television.Superb

May 21, 2018Strong season introduction to this spy thriller drama that includes a unique story, complex characters living complex lives, and an interesting conflict that only grows to be more interesting and complicated as the series evolves. Goes way beyond its Russian-spy hook.

Jul 28, 2013Really cool show. The acting is really good and the plot is interesting. The most successful part of this show, however, is how they make you root for the people who should be the "villains" and against the FBI. Very interesting thus far and I will continue to watch it with interest as it progresses.

Jun 30, 2013Ties Walking Dead as my favorite series 1 to date. And yes, I've seen the majority the highly rated series. Of course, it will be when it comes to other series to see how this goes, but it could become one of the best ever.
I'm looking forward to season 2 more than any other show on TV, and that is saying a ton. -
Mar 24, 2013Better than I expected, I am liking it much more than Homeland. I love the use of 1980's issues, politics and historical events. I am impressed with the personal dynamics of the families and the comparison of the two married families that happen to across the street from each other. This is one show I really look forward to each week, and I am pleasantly surprised with each episode.
-
Jul 26, 2013I really looked forward to watching this show each week. As is so often the case in real life, the good guys and bad guys are hard to tell apart. I think Keri Russell has done a good job with her part especiall some of the flashbacks.

May 4, 2013Really exciting spy action, without the genre-usual politics. The characters are well designed and believable and the personal stories and relationships add greatly to the tension. Love it!

May 12, 2013Having trouble getting past my dislike of the main characters after that crummy job they had to pull in Episode 2. Not sure if I want to go on viewing the rest of the episodes.

Feb 13, 2014Superb series, one of the best written shows in the last decade. It has an excellent cast who perform their roles well. Very believable and since the author is an ex.CIA officer, probably quite close to reality.
-
Jan 31, 2014Great show, good acting, and far from boring. Loved every episode so far, but a few too many sex scenes. Sometimes I feel like I'm watching a high-production porno and not a TV show.
-
Feb 28, 2014Best show on television. The finale was just amazing. Great realism with good politics combined with fantastic charter development.
Oh .. and not afraid to kill off major characters which always keeps you guessing. -

May 10, 2014I loved season one of this series.
It's a unique approach taken by focusing on the KGB agents as opposed to the FBI guys, presenting the viewer with an odd sense of duality in routing for both groups of agents to succeed.
The acting is good, and the sub plots help flesh out some of the episodes that otherwise could be a bit mundane.
Very enjoyable. -
Sep 9, 2014The Americans is probably the best show on basic cable. The writing is excellent, the music is perfect, and the acting is top notch. The show captures the 1980's perfectly.
-
Jun 10, 2015As a 1982 high school graduate, it's amazing to be taken back to my adolescent area in such a truthful yet dark way. In my opinion, it's the best show on TV at the moment.

Feb 4, 2016Really expected more from The Americans given the plot of the show. I was expecting a kind of reverse of Homeland which was great, but unfortunately I found the characters drab, shallow, boring, unsympathetic, and worst of all predictable. Seem like there was great potential here, but some where along the way the ball was dropped...did not enjoy this show much.

-
May 7, 2017This is currently the best drama on television. Great acting, stories, and directing. Has the real feel of being in the 1980s. Will be sad at the end of the next season since that is the last one.

Oct 30, 2018Great series! Without an excess of action and other debris, weekdays undercover spies are shown! The only thing that upsets is the terrible accent of the actors when they are trying to speak Russian :)
-
Dec 18, 2021Fantastic start to one of the most realistic (and nailbiting) espionage fiction. Erri and Matthew propel an otherwise slow paced family drama that happens to be about spys. Stick with this and you will be rewarded.
-
Mar 8, 2019Very good show, excellent acting and solid storyline. Pretty realistic, overall a very good job

[A] smart espionage drama.
-
The Americans has potential. The way it uses recent history as a reflector of modern deceits while bouncing the concept of patriotism around mixes nicely with the hang-by-your-fingertips story turns.
-
It's tense, engrossing, mildly ludicrous--and worth checking out before the Cold War melts. [11 Feb 2013]
