This is a cartoon like version of history. Vikings takes some liberties but is well acted and written. Santa Ana might as well be Snidely Whiplash/ Almost every character is overacted.

I realize there's another 85 years left, but Texas Rising will surely remain in strong contention for the worst TV mini series of the entire 21st century.

Next time I'm passing through San Antonio, Gonzales, Goliad, or Victoria, I'll be sure to look for that desert mountain landscape that looks suspiciously like southern California.

This lame low budget stinker is an affront to the memory of Bill Paxton's distant cousin Sam Houston and offensive to anyone with even the simplest knowledge of Texas history.

This series goes far beyond "poetic license." As others have commented, the geography is atrocious; the dialogue stiff and unbelievable - delivered by actors who do not convince me of their characters; the two young Rangers have particularly awful lines, delivered unbelievably; the complete deviation of actual historical events (for example, there were no adult male survivors at the Alamo; the "yellow rose of Texas" was not in the Alamo, nor did she travel with Santa Anna); Santa Anna was an opium addict and he never traveled without an ample supply - Emily would not have needed to bring him any of the drug; the conversation about women by the two men about women was entirely unnecessary and contributed nothing to the story; Deaf Smith was not suffering from TB, which seems to be the implied disease; etc., etc., etc. This series makes me question every production the History Channel has ever made. Those who have not lived in Texas will have no idea about the "real" Texas landscape and history - a disgrace!!! Expand

By far worst Mini series in a while. Some scenes add nothing to the actual story of the day. Ray Liotta's character has what purpose...? Did some people actually get paid for putting this together ...? Whoever thought and approved this for production must be out of a job or should at least be looking for a new line of work. Pitiful....

Certain factions are portrayed like bad guys from Rocky & Bullwinkle, as if the battle of the Alamo was a simple case of good humans versus bad humans. It's a slap in the face to the folks who lived in that time, they're all rolling in their unmarked graves (though History Channel probably found their bones and incinerated them long ago to get a nice Coca-Cola deal).

A half-assed show, through and through.

Hard to get over this geographic disgrace. Culturally offensive. Horrible, horrible accents... horrible. I now question everything I have seen on the History Channel. What a disservice to recorded history. A trip through the Institute of Texas Cultures would have done wonders for the writers of this climatic disappointment. I feel embarrassed for the cast and crew.

"Texas Rising" is an insult to both Texas and reality, possibly produced by folks in L.A., England, or Austin who hope to cash in on the current serial bonanza. Texas U. cheerleaders yell "Texas Fight! Texas Fight! Texas Fight!" Not Sam Houston's Army. I thought I was watching a comedy.

I think they had to dumb down the performance capabilities of such talented actors, I mean c'mon Brendan Frasier looks and sounds like he's suffering from some bowel disorder, and these fresh faces painted to look weathered and winded Texans fall flat like a buttermilk pancake. I don't buy it and they shouldn't be selling it. The action sequences come off too sharp and timely, and the drama has no sincerity to it, its like watching divorced couples date again; it doesn't feel right. It was a boring premier with quick flash in the pants with young boys playing cowboy in an pristine Mexican landscape with a story line that is grossly off-the-fact to Texas history. What a disappointment when you have such a good cast. The story and dialogue are weak and flat. The two young characters are annoyingly superfluous as a side-story. A total waste of my time. I will give the 2nd episode a try, but, I don't think it will suddenly develop into a story with teeth. The reality of such poor stories and dialogue have had me watching the old movies since I was a kid.

The first episode that has aired isn't a strong one, it's slow and at times dull, but the show does has potential. Many television shows have started out with not so good first episodes, but end up being surprisingly great. Optimistically hoping Texas Rising is one of them.

The series is well done from a visual point of view. The aesthetics work out nicely.
Unfortunately that is pretty much it. The writing is horrid, the character portrayal is flat and boring and the overall dramaturgy is simply appalling, heavy-handed and outdated. It feels like a bad film from the 60s, just with the visuals of a current day production. Not worth anyone's time.

The disclaimer before title sequence should read 'fictional fantasy based on romanticized personal accounts'. This show is like most people have pointed out is filmed in California not Texas. There's no reason to have the cast do exaggerated accents . Santa Anna I have a feeling will have a drastically different outcome after his defeat than what happened in real life.
