This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I came to rediscover Stargate in my adulthood, though I grew up watching random episodes as a child on TV. I recently left the military so I was quite fond of the whole military side of things the series offered. Obviously not everything is accurate but for a series that started in the early 90's I was willing to look past it and enjoy it for what it is. I found the SG-1 and Antlatis series on Netflix and Hulu, loved nearly every episode. That however is NOT the case with the Universe series. After committing over 300 hours to watching the first two series and the films I naturally wanted to follow the storyline/timeline so I transitioned to the Universe series. I was excited and ready to continue my journey into the Stargate series and had high hopes for the latest seasons that Universe had to offer. Sure, I wasn't always happy with every episode in the previous series, especially with the vague definitions of romantic relationships between characters... an ongoing issue that has plagued the entirety of Stargate's franchise. By that I mean that even with character development and clear indications of the motives and the mannerisms of the characters, they would do things that made no sense or contradicted the build up of their character when dealing with romance of any type. I thought it was bad before and was an example of weak writing, but let me tell you that Universe takes the cake! There is a plethera of stupidity in the actions and reasons that motivate the characters in Universe. It gets so confusing to understand what is even going on because each character acts irrationally and the plot of each epsiode seems to run in circles. I dont know who's with who anymore, I'm pretty sure at this point they've basically had an orgy with the who cast. Following the topic of romantic relations a bit more this show is extremely innappropriate, and not in a good way! Sure, in the pilot episode of SG1 there was a scene of full nudity but that is nothing to the ammount of sex scenes and implied nudity in Universe. I fail to see the relevance in it all when they are trying to survive on the ship and get back home and whatnot. I honestly feel like the writers didnt have it in them to come up with a good plot so they just put non-nude sex scenes in to take up time. I mean look, I'm an adult, normally I'm all for a good sex scene... but I've already invested 300 hours into the Stargate franchise and developed an attachment to it, dont disrespect me with poor writing skills. I still have no idea what the focus of the series was, but it's sad that I can't even count the number of times Chloe has slept with someone in the show. The characters seem to be mental patients. The lore of the Stargate program dictates that members of the organization are the best and brightest and highly skilled and experienced military members. They did a good job of trying to adhere to that in SG1 and Atlantis. They seem to have forgot those KEY focusses in Universe. The only character who seems to be acting in the typical fashion is the scientist Rush. Almost every other character is a hothead and acts impulsively. From the moment the series started they had a mob mentality to distrust Rush for seemingly no reason, then when Rush acts out against them in response it gives them "reason" to distrust him even more, fueling the flame for this dumpster fire of a plot. I cant get over it. The Col. Young is a joke, literally just bothers me everytime he opens his mouth. Nothing his character does makes sense and I feel like they tried really really hard to write him in as the new generation O'Niel, which does a huge discredit to his character and the series alike. Dont get me started with the hothead MSgt Greer. Literally the essence of military inaccuracy in a film piece. Like a todler with a loaded diaper, walking around angry for no reason and babling on about nothing that makes sense. His lines are so terrible and the way he executes them is even worse. I'm paraphrasing here but there was a line that he used that said "Not long ago they would beat people like me for looking at white women", in a situation that CLEARLY that was not called for. Like I honestly can't begin to imagine what the writers were thinking.
Lets not forget the military inaccuracies... this punk MSgt Greer (along with many other characters) do not resemble a military servicemember whatsoever, which is disappointing since they did a good job in the preivous two series. MASTER SERGEANT is the rank of an E8 in the Marine Corps, which is the rank and uniform Greer is seen wearing. Let's not mention the fact that he is in an airforce operation, and gets called soldier, and solutes indoors without a cover... he's in his 20's. I have never in all my years heard of a MSgt at the that age! Christ!
I have so much I want to unload about just this series alone but I fall short of the word count. This series is trash and ruined the legacy of the Stargate Franchise. That's all

It started getting okay (not good, never good) right when they canceled it.

Honestly there's no reason to watch this unless you've finished both SG-1 and Atlantis and are DESPERATE for more, regardless of quality. You still will not enjoy

It's more battlestar galactica-esque ship drama than stargate shoot-the-bad-aliens fun times.

I like the premise and ideas but the rest of the show could not fully win me over. The cast is a bit unremarkable in comparison to “Stargate” and “Stargate Atlantis” and lacks the chemistry those characters had. To be fair it got a lot better in season 2 but this was too late for the show. The other aspect was that season 1 had not many great episode. Again season 2 improved. While I see no true garbage episodes there it is in general meritocracy. Some say that “Mediocre is worse than bad” in our times and here I have to reluctantly agree with season 1 (Would disagree in general). The premise of the show is solving the 9th chevron riddle. The Stargates operate by using chevrons. With 7 you can travel inside the galaxy to another Stargate and an 8th chevron is used for a Stargate in another galaxy (Much more energy consumption!). What the 9th does is unclear as the Ancients (Stargate builders / Precursor race with technology that was incredibly advanced) information is not understood. Dr. Rush the leading scientist creates a puzzle based on Ancients algorithms in a multiplayer RPG videogame to find young brilliant minds for the project. I first found this unbelievable stupid but after some thoughts it is a really good idea. No risk of giving away hidden information, huge group you can reach, easy to track and it cost you nothing in comparison. The young genius Eli was able to solve the puzzle and was surprised when the government wants to hire him. He is brought to the Icarus base via Stargate to help solve the issue. After some developments I wont spoil they land in a spaceship called Destiny so far away that even with the best faster than light engines it is not possible to retrieve them (by far!). The Ancients want to solve a riddle as there were inconsistencies in the development of the young universe that cant be explained (Which says something given their advance). This is the set up for the show. Like I said it is on paper far better than in reality. Season 1 is too boring and I asked myself “When did it get good” or “When did it become as enjoyable as Stargate / Stargate Atlantis”. While season 2 improved it is also nowhere near the other 2 shows. The characters are decent but did not work as good as in the previous shows. Many shows have this weakness in season 1 but both Stargate series did it better so I anticipated this also to be true here. I have to repeat it got better in season 2 but the show was already doomed. To be fair I blame no one here while I read complaints by others that they want to chase trends or to be more like other shows (Battlestar Galactica is mentioned a lot but I do not see this). The special effects are as always really good and I have nothing to criticize. However the sets are a bit dark and monotonous in some parts. Overall this while not being bad was a disappointment. I would not recommend it and it is the one (reality) Stargate show that is least talked about not without a reason. Expand
