Star Wars Resistance is the latest animated TV show. What results is a so-so opening two-thirds followed by a decent final third.

Resistance plays it safest of the recent Star Wars animated shows. It's more child friendly than Rebels, which was itself friendlier than Clone Wars. A lot of the episodes are too lightweight and forgettable.

It doesn't help that the majority of the show takes place on Colossus. You don't get a lot of space scenes or other locales. Sure, the first season of Rebels had mostly been limited to one planet, but it at least allowed variety. Colossus is surrounded by water. All you have is the station.

On the plus side, Colossus is a fully realized and well designed area. It has many get occupants that get fleshed out. That's how the show gets stronger in the end. Characters motivations and arcs are set up and you get more invested in them as things go on.

As the First Order becomes more prominent, the threat gets more interesting. SWR does a good job of showing how the Order managed to rise in the outer skirts of the galaxy and how the Republic got complacent after the fall of the Empire and the risks of forgetting the sins of the past. The season's main villains Vonreg and Pyre are pretty basic, interchangeable, and uninteresting, though.

Main character Kaz is a likable enough guy who is brave and means well but often humorously struggles and fumbles his way throughout the mission. He is an interesting counterpart to Star Wars Rebel's lead Ezra Bridger. Whereas Ezra was a kid who lost a lot and had a reason to fight the Empire, Kaz is a guy who was born into wealth but legitimately wants to prove himself and do good just for the sake of it. However, he takes up way more screentime than he can carry. One reason Rebels worked was because it was an ensemble with a well-established cast. Here some characters seemed to be given short shrift.

Of the rest of the cast, I rather liked the naive, good-natured Neeku. He was a nice change of pace from a lot of SW characters cynical or war weary.

I got used to the character animation, which uses cell-shaded computer graphics, but it still isn't my favorite. The lack of visible lines on the characters got to me and they seem like they were in a photo that was ruined by too much light. The scenery is a different story. Set animation is nice, but it is the sky and space backgrounds that really pop. The sky over Colossus is one of the nicest looking skies I've ever seen.

Yes, this isn't the strongest Star Wars ever, but I did grow invested near the end. (There is one plot development I didn't see coming at first.) Rebels started off weak in it's first season, but it really grew after that. I'm hoping the same with Resistance and will be looking forward to the next season.

Maybe not the best Star Wars show, but it's an exciting one, thanks to Lucasfilm & Disney, & I hope they make this story like Rebels, with it's humor, especially from Kaz & Neeku.

    Contains very mild spoilers.

Good things: I like the animation. Dogfigths look great. If they end up making some huge space battles it could look amazing, Characters look ok, but not great but it didn't bother me too much. Mediocre things: Music. It is only my opinion, but the music wasn't "starwarsy" enough for me. It is forgettable and lacks epicness of star wars. Bad things:

    Bad things:
Story. It is quite obvious that this is a series for young kids. It is not Avatar: The Last Airbender. it is not Dragon Prince.
Characters. They are boring and one dimensional. Main problem is the main character: Kaz is very goofy and really annoying as main character. (and I didn't think Ezra was annoying like most people). He is constantly narrating what he is doing. Oh and he is apparently indestructible. He gets blown up by blaster fire from the platform into the air (should be dead), lands on the front window of passing pirate ship (very dead). Gets thrown from the pirate ship back on the platform (super dead)...... and he lands in the same spot with no injury... :/ The force was with him?

Why would the Resistance even send some random pilot on some random spying mission? Shouldn't they send someone who knows how to do spy stuff and want to do the job? Also isn't he part of New Republic Military? Its not even mentioned that he is a deserter.

    Nitpicking:
First scene really bugs me. There are three Republic Fighters engaging one First Order TIE. and they fly in the straight line like three Idiots away from the TIE, screaming all the time that they are doomed, and that enemy pilot is sooo good... It is quite obvious that they should scatter, TIE follows one X-Wing, rest of them attack him easily from behind. They probably wanted to establish that Major Vonreg is a threat, and he is capable of attacking superior enemy force alone. All I got is that republic pilots are incompetent, and they know nothing about starfighter combat.

This bugs me because main character is starfighter pilot. Starfighter pilot = many space battles. And this space battle SUCKED.(still looks good) It is puzzling because they were capable of making those kind of engagements properly in rebels (skilled baddie pilot wiping floor with the good guys) like Vader vs, Phoenix fleet, Protectors vs. Hera squadron,

That's all. There are some good things but it is mostly bad.

November: Still not good. It is good that First Order Stormtroopers are still graduates of Stormtrooper School of Not Hitting Things. :] Also I suspect that higher ranking FO officers are Power Rangers. Red Power Ranger pilot, Gold Power Ranger infantry officer, And their leader: Chrome Power Ranger, Maybe gold armour is a uniform for middle ranking officers, but I have a bad feeling (Star Wars!), that every minor villain of the week will have different armour color.

The Flight choreography is somehow even more boring than Rebels, and this is supposed to be a show specifically about pilots. The ships hardly move and the pilots have terrible aim unless the plot demands otherwise. The dialogue feels like it was written by 4kids, and the art style just hurts to look at. Granted, the animation itself is nice and fluid, more fluid than Rebels was and less stiff than Clone wars. However, the bright colors and obnoxious dialogue make this point moot.

Kids will be entertained by the bright colors and cheap jokes, but beyond that this show is a pass for me.

There is little to no character development. The series was sold as a series about racing and becoming a star pilot. So far the only racing the main character has done was in the first episode. While this show may be airing on Disney and so many will say this is just a kid's show, Clone Wars and Rebels were able to satisfy the needs of both children and adults at the same time. Other cartoons are also able to successfully walk the line between being a show that is interesting and fun for kids as well as adults. Star Wars:Resistance fails miserably at this. Expand

Basically SWR consists of a string of nonsensical actions by the characters for the sake of plot convenience. For example Poe recruits Kaz, basically at random and within the first five minutes of meeting him. Kaz is not the most brilliant character either doing the most dumb things that will have you asking if he is really that stupid. Another question is to whom this is aimed at. Yeah, supposedly kids, but #1 it is canon so naturally all star wars fans would like to consume it, and #2 it is too late at night for kids. So, what gives? Anyway, final verdict, SWR is too stupid, unfunny and boring. It might improve, but first impressions are important. Expand

Following Disney's continuous destruction of SW saga, this is a show with no plot and no concept, forgettable characters and shallow dialogues. Aimed at 8-9 year old children, it has absolutely nothing to do with the previous TV SW series. If you're a fan, avoid.

What can i say? Poor writing, predictable story, very bad animation quality. Even a 3 year old will find the show boring and tedious.
Bad direction for Disney and most importantly - for Star Wars.

Honestly not understanding a lot of the hate. I think the largest problem this series faces is that it doesn't have stakes. But thats about it.

I didn't expect a lot from this series, but I enjoyed this pilot a lot more than I did with the Rebel series premier. I don't have experience with the animation style, but I love the way this show looks. The color palette really pops. By the time Kaz/Poe arrive at the Colossus I was totally hooked on the look and feel of this series and it feels very much like Star Wars to me.

I'm amazed at how well the new characters are introduced. It's all very organic and it's funny. I love the mix of creatures/humans so far. Oh, and the ships look amazing!

I don't expect Poe to be a huge part of this series, but he's used well to introduce us to Kaz. I really loved how Neeku Vozo was introduced and how he spread the rumor that Kaz was the best pilot in the galaxy. I was curious how BB-8 would be used, but he seems to be a major part of the series despite being Poe's droid. This takes place pretty close to The Force Awakens so I expect this show to pass The Last Jedi in future seasons.

Overall this show is a lot of fun. It's full of great characters who I'm sure are going to be further developed. It also has some strong minor characters. Fix, Orka and the bartender whose name escapes me probably won't be huge characters, but they have some good moments. This is a show that should appeal to children and fans alike. Plus, it should serve to give us some much needed backstory on the First Order, the Resistance, and the New Republic.

I wouldn't say this really feels like the Star Wars I know, but thats a good thing. It felt fresh and new and the animation style was a welcome change from TCW and Rebels. Dave Filoni is proving to be one of the great voices in Star Wars.

It is actually a good show later on if you can endure the painful beginning episodes and annoying main character who improves also during the show. The first episode is so filled with overacting and an annoying Kazuda Xiono that it hurts. Don't use the „This is a show for kids“ argument as this is an insult for kids. There are other shows for kids that do better. For example: Look whatIt is actually a good show later on if you can endure the painful beginning episodes and annoying main character who improves also during the show. There are other shows for kids that do better. For example: Look what serious lessons are brought sneaky into “The Fairy OddParents” or how deep and good Avatar: The Last Airbender” is. I think a lot of the negative reviews came from this first episode(s) and I cant blame anyone here as the first impression is important for a TV show. To be fair the first seasons of “The Clone Wars” and “Rebels” were also weaker as were other science fiction shows like for example TNG and DS9 to make a sacrilegious Star Trek comparison here. Sadly Kazuda while being relatable and has a good heart for me is also really annoying before he becomes a far better character. It is not Jar Jar levels but if the show were more popular he would maybe be regarded as second coming of Jar Jar. He gets better during the show but the annoyance never left completely. A lot of the first episodes are about him failing at almost everything and being annoying for everyone. I think he starts as the weakest main character in all Star Wars shows and it is not worth to endure for many. Even I just wanted to see if it gets better and if the people who praise this show have found redeeming qualities. At the end of season 1 I say it improves a lot and if the first episodes were as good as the later half I would fully praise the show and it would probably be in the 8/10 range or maybe a bit higher. Lets start with a general story set up: It is the story of New Republic pilot Kazuda Xiono who meets the legendary Resistance ace pilot Poe Dameron. Inspired by him he wants to join the Resistance too and ends on the refueling station on the planet Castelion as spy. The station has some strategic value as it is a place were many fractions have interests in. So starts the story and it sounds promising on paper but is weaker in actually. Characters: Like I already said the main character Kazuda Xiono starts as probably the weakest in the cast and I blame this on the script and poor decisions. He is a typical rich / influential father kid with no special skills except being a really good pilot. He is really annoying, clumsy and insecure but improves later so much that I liked him and want to see more but he is at the beginning so annoying that a lot of people given up on the show. I say from episode 6 onward it gets better and the actual plot is also getting started. The rest of the cast is excellent and far outclasses the main character (at least at the first half). Jarek Yeager has a lot of depth to his character when you know his story as have Tamara Ryvora, Torra Doza and Captain Doza. Neeku Vozo became one of my favorites and Synara Sans struggle and arc are excellent. Also the side characters Orka & Flix, Aunt Z and the two child's Kel and Ezra are truly enjoyable. There are a lot of familiar faces in the show and the fan service is O.K. Visually the show looks excellent and I praise the style. No misstep in this regard and it is probably better than “Rebels” and “Clone Wars”. Soundtrack it is good by Star Wars standards which is expected by now. My favorite episodes are: “The Children from Tehar” for the so named characters, ideas and story including the conclusion. “The Platform Classic” for learning more about Yaegers past, interesting dilemma and conclusion. “Bibo” even if its foreseeable for the story, Bibo and Neeku. The final 3 episodes “Descent”, “No Escape part 1 and 2” for a strong final, Tamaras struggles and overall story. A really strong finish. Overall this is an example how not to make the first episodes of a show and not to introduce the main character. The harsh criticism is valid for the beginning of the show but it also improves later on to a level were I can also understand and support the praise of the show. It is hard to give an advice or to decide if it is worth watching with such a weak start and I am a huge Star Wars fan. The later half is really good and improves my rating. So I give a 5/10 as the good characters and later half save the show for me. Expand

The Star Wars Resistance premiere is a fun watch, and as good a reason as any to tune into Disney late on a Sunday night. Where it goes from there, we’ll just have to wait and see.
