"Ahsoka" is a prime example of how to let Star Wars fans down in almost every way. Right out the gate, the pacing is a drag; two episodes in and it feels like we're stuck in a Star Wars traffic jam, inching towards a climax that never seems to come. The script is pure amateur hour, sprinkled with dialogue so cringeworthy it makes Jar Jar Binks look like a Shakespearean scholar. The script is pure amateur hour, sprinkled with dialogue so cringeworthy it makes Jar Jar Binks look like a Shakespearean scholar. The characters are robotic and flat, they interact like a couple of malfunctioning Siri devices having a bad day. The show shamelessly pilfers scenes and ideas from other movies and lacks that authentic Star Wars essence that die-hard fans yearn for. Let's not even touch on the fight choreography; I've seen better battles between toddlers. Visually, instead of "Mandalorian" quality, it looks like Disney's budget went the way of Alderaan. Sadly, "Ahsoka" feels less like the next great Star Wars chapter and more like a god damn galactic faceplant. Expand

More Disney garbage... with vanilla characters, bad writing, cosplay costumes, poor acting, and a reliance on cameos. Wish people would realize that Filoni is NOT good. Most everything he makes is bad... with occasional strong moments that any fanfic writer could write.

Story line very average, special effects great.

Before Disney took over, EVERY piece of Star Wars property had an opening crawl. The red flag, everyone, was the bland, red text opening, something that looked like it was out of a SyFY generic.

It’s more Disney Wars. And you know what that means. Cringe writing. Terrible dialogue. Horrible performances. The Filoniverse desperately tries to attract fans by bastardizing the Timothy Zahn novels but fails as completely as anything else Disney has done with the IP. It truly is time to put Star Wars out of its misery.

After the weak and disappointing Mandalorian season 3 this was the last hope for the Star Wars fans and Disney. Even more the Rebels characters and Thrawn return. Sadly the hype and hopes were crushed really fast. My favorite characters are barely recognizable. Sabine Wren is completely different and what happen with Ahsoka is beyond my understanding. I recommend Rebels instead where the whole cast won me over and I deeply cared for them. They had their arcs, character grow, great chemistry and challenges. Then there is the story. Like I said it collapses really fast. For examples with a “Slight spoiler warning”: There is a valuable MacGuffin that is collected in episode 1. Now think about the last emergency action. If succeed this would destroy it and everything ended here and now. Also the explosion is really strong for such a small frame. Use whatever this is for ship to ship combat. A small vessel should take down a Star Destroyer with ease. Then the puzzle that only Sabine could solve is child play. I could solve it in minutes by just try and error. Deadly lightsaber wounds are just small bruises now. Lastly a lot of people are incompetent. The captain of the prison ship, the villains for their carelessness with droids and the leadership of the republic for ignoring serious threads. Especially Mon Mothma is degraded here to powerless leader. She was the leader of the rebellion that took down the Empire and now she fears to make the correct decisions just to please people that are ignorant. I will say again that I don't blame the actors for a bad script. Eve a great actor can not save a bad movie or show. Overall this is not garbage but feels painfully generic. They wasted an opportunity, great characters and fall back to tropes we don't like. I quit after episode3 were nothing happened that pushed the story forward. Give a 4/10 even if its is better than Book of Boba Fett and Obi Wan. It is fatigue for bad stories. Star Wars is now dead and there is just apathy from the fans. Great job Disney for destroying the “Money printing franchise” Star Wars was. Expand

Everyone kept talking in this crazy monotone voice, Ahsoka was the worst, it fell flat like "hey! there's a fire in the middle of the room" type of deal but everyone was all chill about it and max relax about it. "ah, there is a fire in the room, let me flush that toilet, no big deal"... It was just weird as if every read one line at a time from a page and the camera recorded the work. No emotion in the dialogue except for the villains' who barely managed to have good conversational tones for their roles. I remember Ahsoka being feisty and brash, she just looked smug for most of the show.... like seriously? Is that how it is gonna be? Hera was way too happy. I remember being a nervous wreck most of the time but now it is like she was on some happy pills. The music was there but did not really give any character to the show. You know it is StarWars when John Williams gets the French Horns blowing when the baddies arrive. No such thing here. Just ambient music. Music in StarWars in itself is a character that helps narrate the story. Nothing of the sort here.

Lots of great visuals but empty as far as meaning to them. it just felt like a theatre play more than anything else, not the best StarWars out there... so far. Unless the tempo ramps up, its on pace to become like Obi Wan category in ratings. Most people will like this show, but if you are a die hard fan of the material from the start and not just the recent stuff and format, it will feel subpar for you.

No wonder these 2 episodes came out i think they know it is not really good material and wanted to get it out of the way asap. For now. It is a Filoni fail for me. Hope it get's better!

Sadly this show is let down by the amateurish script. The opening will the sith boarding the ship is ridiculous. The captain suspects they aren't who they say they are yet he let's them board. He they goes to meet them, not knowing how many there will be with just a handful of security one of which has flippers for hands so can't even use his weapon. No surprise then he dies. And why in these new Star Wars do they have people or bases which are hidden in a secret location yet they then create a map telling you how to find them/it and leave the map lying around in some old temple for anyone to find?
Then we have Sabine. Am I the only one who knew she would take the map? I don't even know the character but it was obvious she wasn't going to do as she was told.
And when she fought the sith girl why did the sith not just kill her. Clearly she could have. Why waste time playing with her and then leave her alive. When she stabbed her why not cut her in 2.
Absolute drivel. I will watch the rest in the hopes it will improve but I am sceptical, Obi Wan, Boba Fett and the Mandalorian just got worse as they went along. But at least this show has plenty of female empowerment in it to keep us all happy..

I can under stand making a couple of these types of movies. But Star Wars was always a "guy thing". Probably 85% of fans were guys. So one would think Disney would target their main audience, but nooooo. Disney basically said eff you guys, you guys are going to pay to see it anyway, so we are going to target females, minorities, and the Alphabet people. Why cant movies just be good entertainment like they used to be without trying to push their politics down everyone's throat. I think people are starting to push back and are tired of this crap in movies, entertainment, and products we consume. Look at Disney, Bud Light and Target stocks. They are falling fast. Sabina Wren was so edgy and cringe it hurt. I'm shocked in the quality difference between this and Boba Fett.
Disney doesn't realize that when you have an all female lead, it doesn't make women want to watch Star Wars more AND it pushes men away from the show due to women not making intimidating or relatable characters for men. However in their hollywood board rooms fresh out of 'diversity university', they think making the same mistake as 7-9 will pan out in the end. They're betting all their imperial credits on it.

The plot is lacking and what really did it was the lightsaber strike to the chest. The next day she is sitting up and acting like nothing happened? Unfortunately, Dave Filloni is not as strong a director or writer as he is a creator and storyteller. There is a lot about this show that is well done, but some of it feels like a live adaptation of a kids show rather than a high quality new Star Wars product.

One, the Republic had a butt-ton of Jedi to do it's bidding and was a "democracy" (only run by a religious paramilitary force). We don't know much about the politics, outside ever-boring trade agreements, only about the two religious factions vying for control, so it's not really a republic, it's a theocracy (complete with robes). Then the Empire took over and made it, well, an Empire, though nothing really changed there either, apart from them trying, and succeeding, in wiping out most of the Jedi, their religious rivals. Now the Alliance is on top and looking to kickstart the old republic in the form of the new republic (meet the old boss...). I don't really get why these two religious factions are fighting each other, and the show is not providing any more clarity.

Two, and I hate Disney for this, all the main characters (sans one, who doesn't really have that many lines), are women. Before the whole woke narrative blew everything up, I wouldn't have noticed it (if the story were compelling and it looked good...which it does, don't forget). That's why I hate Disney. They made me notice. All the **** time. Figures the show seems to hold politics and politicians in such high regard. They do the same thing; pit people against each other based on things they are rather than what they've accomplished. Just like new Star Wars and this show. And even with all the main characters being women, there's still a sense that they're pressing their noses to the glass of the original movies and the Mandalorian. They want so bad to be taken serious, like real Star Wars, but they're preoccupied with making it nothing but a girl version of better material. They're blind to the one thing that would make this truly a hit - good storytelling.

It's mediocre and I'm still tired of Jedi, lightsabers, and "hokey religions." And I don't care that you got pretty girls to do it.

Edit: Y'all are marking this unhelpful because you know i'm right. Exactly what is sooo bad about this that it deserves lower than a 3? Most people don't even give any arguments, they just bomb the score. And some of y'all are so embarrassed that there are some females lmao. In a ahsoka series, get your head out of your ass.

This is an ongoing issue that plagues metacritic, metacritic should verify everyone's account to check if someone even saw it.

Great start into the series. Maybe a bit too much over-explanation, but people, who didn't see Rebels or Clone Wars might need it. I don't need Emmy worth story-telling like Andor all the time, as long as it's entertaining and respectful towards the universe and characters. So far so good.

The first two episodes are better than Mandalorian season 3, but not even close to Andor. The main problem, of course, is that this could only be interesting to those who watched and enjoyed 'Rebels.' The plot seems interesting, and we can only hope it's executed well during the rest of the season. There were little thrills, but the lightsaber duels were exciting for a moment.

A very good, very strong, very promising to the “magnum opus” of Dave Filoni in SW: Ahsoka." The story isn’t like #Andor or like #TheMandalorian either as it’s clear that Filoni’s going for a more serialized, story- driven approach w/ this series rather than the approach Jon Favreau had with the mission of the week and side-quests for each episode of Mando S1 and S3.
Even if you haven’t seen #TheCloneWars and #StarWarsRebels (which you really should and if you haven’t, I don’t know what you’re thinking), you’re still able to play along on what its story is and are able to grasp at the plot of what Mr. Filoni is planning. It’s even clear in the opening crawl (inspired by both the opening crawls of the Star Wars movies and the crawl of episode 1 of Nickelodeon’s #AvatarTheLastAirbender) what the story is and if this series can keep up its momentum of story-and-character focus while balancing its world building at the same time, this will be the shot in the arm that Filoni needs to film his #StarWars movie as a sort of good luck charm when he makes it happen. I only hope he doesn’t shoot it on the Volume and that he films on-location and on sets in London as, while this 2-episode premiere was strong, it does still have a slight issue with the color grading when it comes to desaturated colors and the still not-yet learned lesson of having the skies clear blue when on specific planets. But, I believe Filoni will listen to that criticism and take it to heart, at least I hope so.
Anyway, going back to this premiere, the cast does their best to stay true to the mannerisms of these characters in terms of adapting them to live-action from animation and I think they did a pretty good job w/ what they were given, at least for now as we still have 6 episodes to go. Rosario Dawson still is slick as a stoic and initially reluctant Ahsoka, Natasha L. Bordizzo nails the role of a stubborn Sabine Wren, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead nails the motherly-ness of Hera Syndulla. Eman Esfandi, at least so far, looks like he’s got Ezra Bridger down to the tee based on what we’ve seen of his brief appearance so far, but we must hope it stays that way, especially when and if he shows up in the flesh.
The MVPs of this episode though are the two droid characters of this series: David Tennant returning as the Jedi-lightsaber construction assisting droid Professor Huyang from Season 5 of The Clone Wars and Chopper (once again voiced by Filoni himself) of Star Wars Rebels.
As for the villains of the series, while I do want to see more of Ivanna Sahkno as Shin Hati, her master Baylan Skoll is played quite regally yet sinisterly by the late Ray Stevenson (RIP Ray) and I look forward to learning more about his past and Shin’s past in upcoming episodes. We learn something big about the backstory of Morgan Elsbeth in this episode that might play some important part of the plans of the return of Thrawn. And Marrok leaves a good impression Mystery regarding the character that him being spared alive means there is a big important detail about the character we have yet to learn so I look forward to seeing what the deal is with Marrok and if that former Inquistor has any ties to the past of Ahsoka.
Kevin Kiner’s music is as always well done, the visual effects are still strong, the design of the spaceships are incredible, the environments of the planets we see are quite alluring, and the series, at least for its 1st 2 episodes, establish a story that is all killer, no filler, and I hope it’s gonna stay that way until the very last episode of this series, at least when it comes to its only season that’s playing out as we speak so far. I see that is succeeding in becoming the happy medium between The Mandalorian (with lore and world building) and Andor (telling a story that is focused and not bogged down by too much fan service) and I hope it stays that way.
This is in some ways a live-action continuation of the storyline setup at the end of Rebels, but it is also Ahsoka’s story at the same time as she tries to find her peace of training Sabine after what she went through discovering what happened to her master Anakin Skywalker when he became Darth Vader, which isn’t a spoiler if you saw The Empire Strikes Back. And I hope it stays that way. I believe it will. But we shall see. 6 episodes left this season. Let’s hope they keep it up. Can’t wait for more.
Episode 1 (“Master and Apprentice”) is a 10/10 for me as it is given the time for Filoni to put all his chess pieces of the story & its characters in place with him directing his first script. And while Episode 2 (“Toil and Trouble”) is ≈25% shorter than the Episode 1, it’s still well-paced thanks to the direction of Steph Green and gets the story moving well without breaking a sweat and gets the story moving well w/0 breaking a sweat to put the characters on their journey.

So for right now, the 2-episode premiere gets a 9/10 from me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m liking it. It really does feels like a Rebels Season 5 so far with the music, the characters, you can of course just feel that Filoni style, but him being the helm of his own show and also has “written by” credit in every episode and it’s some of the better elements(and some not so great) of his work so far. It doesn’t feel as easy and bumbling as Rebels could sometimes be either lol as the enemies seem actually maybe formidable?

Episode 1 slow for the first half and picks up a ton toward the second half. I’m glad it’s not a “wait till things happen in episode 6” type deal.

The characters feel like their rebels counterparts and also are likeable I think. One or two dumb tactical things and nitpicks but it looks and feels like Star Wars. Nothing glaringly wrong to me I’d have to fine tooth comb for this one. The villains are cool and not whiny I don’t think. Two voice actors I saw returned for live action too as well as of course our favorite sass droid. And special shoutouts to the actresses playing their rebel counterparts. I especially like Sabine and Hera is a close second. Ahsoka is good too but Rosario never stuck COMPLETELY with me as Ahsoka. She’s great but the others play their counterparts better I think.

Episode 2 really seems to pick up. The pacing keeps up and the action keeps up.. The writing seems sensible, it still looks good and consistent. nothing is glaring or out of place.

Nothing like people running into tree branches from a mile away level, don’t worry lol. Speeders and ships move fast and everything lmao.

We all know what I’m referencing lmfao.

It’s sensible. The story isn’t easy. It looks good, the acting is good. It seems there’s actually a budget here.

Sabine also surviving the stab wound I can attribute to Ahsoka literally being right overhead. Qui-Gon didn’t have time, Anakin survived full body burns and Maul survived his lower half being chopped off, but padme dies of a broken heart lol. Also time passed since the prequels, wouldn’t technology have… evolved?

Dare I say it feels like Star Wars?

Unless you’re immensely invested in the relationships between Ahsoka, Sabine, and Hera, or the search for Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn and young Jedi Ezra Bridger, or a forgettable villain who was in one episode of The Mandalorian years ago, then there’s really nothing here to connect to. That could change, and I think that’s why Disney wisely decided to release two episodes at once, but as it stands the villains are boring and the heroes are all way too insistent on being stubbornly stoic about everything—which is also boring! In a show where, when a scene needs to establish a thing, the characters often stand there directly, drily discussing that thing – “show don’t tell” being another writing rule that hasn’t survived the trip across the cosmos – Tennant is often left trying to say unfunny lines in a funny voice. Like everything in Ahsoka, he could be so much better if he were allowed to cut loose and entertain us.
