Season 5 continues the series great mixture of interesting stories full of ideas, enjoyable character development / interactions flavored with good humor. For the new characters we got Ro Laren and Alexander Rozhenko. Ro Laren has become my favorite addition because of her back story, character development and understandable motives with hard decisions. I like the struggles he and his father have because even in the far advanced future family problems don't solve themselves. Time changes but people dont was the quote that fits. Slice of life in space maybe. For the guest appearances we got Spock in a great two parter. Wesley Crusher returns and shows how his character can be used better. If this was how its character would be handled he would be liked by a majority. Like I said they optimized the formula for the show. You get good stories with interesting ideas that have emotional impact and are enjoyable. There are of cause the excellent “Darmok” episode I will describe later and “The Outcast”. The later deals with LGBT themes in a brilliant and nuanced way. This is how it should be done. Not forced down your throat. It makes you think and holds a mirror in front of you. X-Men does it similar with racism. Overall another highlight season. Nothing more and nothing less. My favorite episodes are: “Redemption II” for the Klingon civil war, Worfs development and resolve. Must also praise Data for his quick thinking. “Darmok” for its unique idea and brilliance. I just recognize that I cant even tell you why because of spoilers. I will only say it is unlike everything I have seen in science fiction. “Ensign Ro” for the combination of the character and story. This is how you should introduce a character. I instantly was attached to her story and character arc / development. “The Game” for the intense story and idea I cant spoil. “Unification I+II” for Spock and the story with lots of twists and some good humor. “A matter of time” for the character Rasmussen and his arc. Also the dilemma here. “The Masterpiece Society” for the philosophic problem and setting, the menace and the solution that left you puzzled about good intentions (Cant go more into it because of spoilers). “Condrum” for the concept, ideas and character development. I admit there are some flaws in the plot or stupid decisions by the villain. Not considered a spoiler because it is directly obvious. “Ethics” for even those ethics and moral dilemma. It shows that some problems will always remain even when technology advances. “The Outcast” as I already mentioned. Star Trek deals excellent with LGBT themes in a brilliant and nuanced way. This made me think and I considered it being a masterpiece. “Cause and Effect”. It is a recommendation that there has to be a Groundhog Day inspired episode. This one is intense with good detective work an a must see recommendation. “I Borg” because it challenged you as viewer as much as the characters. Also the hidden impacts will become important latter on. “The next Phase” for its brilliant ideas. “The inner Light” for the heartwarming story and impact. So sad but also so good. It has grown on me and became a favorite that is so touching that I cant rewatch it. “Times Arrow”. I am divided this cliffhanger episode is really good but the final resolve in the next season is underwhelming. Also Guinan is always great in this show.… Expand
