I was very skeptical, because of it's predecessor, but thank God, I decided to watch it. It restored my trust to tv writers, who managed to capture Star Trek's essence and spirit and transfer it to a modern series. Sir Patrick Stewart is an absolute pleasure to watch and an epic actor, true to the ancient greek definition of "ethopoios" (one who creates ethos for the audience). Starfleet directives remain the same and Picard made sure of it. Expand

If you takeI'm not quite sure where a lot of the fan hate is coming for this series; I suspect it is people expecting TNG: The Sequel, but from the start this has been its own kind of series, with a contigous story played over ten episodes. If you take it for what it is, and not what it is not, it's a well above average series. There were some moments where there was a plot hole or two, or perhaps more foreshadowing than events deserved, but it's still one of the stronger Trek series, with idealism and pragmatism colliding in that same fashion as we saw in "In a Pale Moonlight" or "Homefront" from DS9. And ultimate, this series isn't about a dystopia, or in some way a betrayal of Starfleet. Consider this: in TNG we meet a lot of admirals, and a good 80% of the time its when they are violating laws or ignoring morals. And after one of the earlier Starfleet discussion with Picard, I was about ready to throw my hands up and say "yay, yet more Starfleet is evil B.S., abandon all hop-" and then immediately after that scene we get a leader doing the right thing, investigating an important matter despite her personal feelings and belief that events were implausible. Doing her job even if she didn't want to. And that pays off by the end, as we see in that final communication. This is Starfleet. They are good. They are a utopia.. but you don't just make utopia and then all problems are solved forever. It's something you earn by struggling to overcome the worst parts of our natures. Expand

I bet William Shatner thought, sometimes they allowed us to say more than, "A double dam on you". I am a huge fan owning all of Enterprise, Star Trek, TNG and now Picard. This was a show that made me get CBS All Access just to see and then watched each episode 3 times after every airing. I grew up with TNG & DS9 but never did that, other than the Best of Both Worlds cliff hanger. If you enjoyed Star Trek the Next Generation then you must support, buy this and love the "F" out of it. The plot took great liberties to go to interesting venues. The plot was murky at times with the justification for the visit or why key characters are where they are.
However, it actually works. It is hard to follow, but the justification makes sense.
In the end though, the most important success is the theme. This was a ten episode morality story with action, and adventure. Picard, in the end, focuses on the question of what do you do when the organization you love, represented, and served fails you as it falls from its ideals.

It is answered in the middle of the series, but requires a few more episodes to SHOW it in action. "I allowed the perfect to become the enemy of the good."

That sentence summarizes the show quite well. We could hate it for a few plot holes that needed a couple sentences to address. Or we could be happy with all the other things it does so well.

I will just choose to be happy with it. It captured the core and themes I grew up with. And that good far outweighs the bad.

After Star Trek Discovery left me very disappointed, Star Trek Picard has corrected the franchise's course. This show is dialogue and character driven, it avoids the modern overuse of action sequences, it bears a nuanced moral message, and it builds upon the great Star Trek canon without haphazardly rewriting it.

The acting is stellar, and Patrick Stewart brings a softer touch to the role. This is very much in line with Picard as we last saw him in Star Trek Nemesis. The easter eggs and nostalgia driven cameos aren't overused. Much as I'd still love to see more from our old friends, they've avoided making this show a mere TNG throwback. Picard stands on its own as a unique adventure in the rich Star Trek universe. As a lifelong Star Trek fan dating back to the 80s, I couldn't be happier with this product.

Halfway through the season and I must say that it is really, really awesome. It is strongly serialised, but that allows them to setup and tell a complex story with well-crafted characters. Looks great as well! Hoping for many more seasons!

Season 1 of Picard was impressive, a beloved return to what made TNG special. Season 2 was a meandering mess, focusing too much on the childhood traumas of our protagonist. But season 3 ignited a spark of fandom that always smouldered insideSeason 1 of Picard was impressive, a beloved return to what made TNG special. Season 2 was a meandering mess, focusing too much on the childhood traumas of our protagonist. But season 3 ignited a spark of fandom that always smouldered inside every TNG fan. Now that the finale is over I am choked up with emotion and fulfillment. The writers have expertly woven in the threads of previous seasons, focusing on the meaning of a well-lived life - dedicated to duty and loyalty. If anything the interaction of old crew members shows that bonds forged last forever. A recurring theme is the eternal question of legacy, which certainly plagues any person blessed or cursed enough to reach old age. The struggles of parents and children span the ages, regardless of which galaxy you live in. This season is the most meaningful stellar conjugation and alignment of all the old shows, revisiting relics of the past while paying respectful tribute. The writers did a fantastic job, with quotes such as “Stars in the same galaxy, light years between us” and “We are not in control of what we pass on”. The power of memories demonstrated was very moving - we exist because of the memories that define us. It is fitting that Picard and his faithful crew would face up against his most iconic and lethal intergalactic foe, in yet another monumental showdown across time and space. Sci-Fi offers no greater villains.
If there is a recurring lesson here, sophisticated organizations like Starfleet are incredibly vulnerable to the slow, insidious, internal threat. The sins of past deeds do return on a titanic scale, and the arrogance of those in power hastens the demise. Seeing all the TNG crew together around the same table, older and way cooler, was a truly unforgettable moment in TV history. Other franchises that missed such opportunities will be held accountable for ages to come. It was particularly satisfying to see each of our beloved characters achieving their fullest potential and meaning in a life well-lived. I am so glad there was no empty fan service. This is truly a passing of the torch and legacy preservation. It was so fulfilling to see one last poker game before any of these beloved crew members trekked into the great beyond the afterlife. The after-credits scene aptly lays the ground for much anticipated and appreciated adventures to come.

I know my way around the franchise as a whole. I can't understand what these reviewers have against the latest Trek series, or why they insist they are "not Star Trek." You'd think that if anyone were to complain, it would be us oldsters who were used to the earlier iterations, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

The Picard series is poetic and visually beautiful. Jeff Russo's superb music adds tremendously to the experience-- the opening theme is one of the most exquisite pieces ever to grace a TV show, and the visual art that accompanies it is equally high in quality and emotional appeal.

Everything changes with the times. Star Trek, over half a century on, has also changed. If it hadn't, I bet these same folks would be complaining that it lacked originality.

I kept shouting at the tv that this was wrong. It felt like an action hero movie with too many characters trying to be interesting at the same time (which most action hero movies are these days).

Star Trek: Picard feels like a return to form. It is perfect? No. Is it always consistent (with previous incarnations or with itself)? No. Is it engaging? Yes. Will it grow out of its imperfections? I suspect so, like most of the previous ST series (watching the first season of any ST series is usually cringe-worthy). So far, this is a serious attempt at ST. The acting is good. The dialogues are good. The action is reasonable (no mushroom drives here).

I say, give it a chance.

Despite the fact that they cribbed off just about every SciFi franchise out there, they did a GREAT job! So much so that by the numerous epilogues in the finale' I found myself slowly golf clapping and muttering "well done, sirs" to myself as the screen faded to black and my heroes from the past 35 years took their (hopefully final) curtain call. I say final cuz I really can't imagine them doing a better job putting it to bed than this. I MAY wanna see cameos of some of these guys in spinoffs (Riker, Geordi & maybe Worf)..but poor Patrick Stewart. Jeez it seemed he could barely speak his lines at times..much less "act". Yeah, I hope he takes the hint and just gracefully retires. THIS "ending" is how I'd like to remember him. (Kirk out) Expand

I did't have high hopes for Picard at all so going into season 1 with very low expectations probably helped me to get through it. I was happy to see familiar faces back at it even if didn't hold up very well. Season 2 fell pretty flat with me with old tropes revisited and not very well. I wasn't interested in season 3 and wasn't going to 'engage' but boredom and reluctance to watch yet another Fail Army video tipped me over the edge. I can safely say I am so glad I gave it a go. Season 3 certainly has its flaws but it is one hell of a solid watch. Amanda Plummer is fantastic as Vadic with so many similarities to Khan. Todd Stashwick as the reluctant and somewhat haunted Captain Shaw is also a welcome addition. This series so far has offered plenty of action balanced with enough moments to give characters some depth. The ship design is so familiar and really pays homage to the original series and movies. The story is big and compelling and this I fear may be season 3's downfall. I could easily see this story stretched out of 2 x 10 ep seasons. I'm up to ep 7 and I fear there is no way they will be able to tie this up in a satisfying way. It's a shame this is the last season. Showrunner Terry Matalas has definitely worked some magic. For the first time in a while I actually feel like I'm watching Trek. Even has that quippy old school trek humour in the mix. Obviously this is not the Star Trek of old and if you go in with that expectation there are going to be disappointments, but it's important to remember the old series used to have 20+ episodes per season and a 7 season run. which gave plenty of time to build in all the aspects that people are crying this show doesn't have. Times have changed as have audiences. Season 3 is a good balance of old and new. The most disappointing thing, is that they didn't do this from season 1 Expand

Since this is supposed to take place twenty years after the last Next Generation movie, we do get a naturally progressed take on the character. Picard is older now and retired and has gotten to that old man point in his life where he stopped caring what anyone else thinks and has loosened up a bit.

This show varies from TNG by being serialized rather than episodic, giving this an almost theatrical quality. The story and the different places our heroes travel to are interesting. There is also a small sense of humor that helps balance some of the darker parts.

However, I admit this isn't a perfectly written show. (There were moments where I considered rating this a little lower but then there'd be a moment that would remind me why I liked the show.) The emphasis on character development does eat into the overarching plot and I felt that parts, especially the revelation of the big mystery, weren't explained as well as they could. The show is also pretty confusing about what parts of the universe need money and what don't.

There are moments that feel like they were ideas from the writers and weren't natural. There will be a couple of times where you'll go "Wait! What?!". In particular, this applies to some of the kills in this. I'm not one of those people complaining about the show just because it's darker. (Even TNG had its darker episodes.) However, some of the kills in this feels like the writers were going for a "Games of Thrones" shock value rather than really being needed.

Picard looks pretty impressive for television, keeping the look and feel of the nineties shows but able to do this on a larger scale. I especially liked that they kept the bright lighting scheme from TNG. Be sure to check out the opening credits.

Overall, I can see how some people could like this less than me because there are some legitimate parts of contention, but I at least recommend you give this a shot before you make up your mind.

It's also a pity that everything was shot in an image format that would look good on old Western or Hostoria films, but not in a top modern science fiction series adapted to domestic TV sets.

Rather than the episode by episode basis of adventures of the Enterprise, the series itself was a wonderful change of what would these characters do if they had a common purpose played out. Compared to Star Trek, and TNG where a problem would be placed in front of the characters and they would spend a single hour solving it, this series presents a problem and spends ten episodes solving it with beautiful visuals and wonderful acting by Stewart and the cast. This series is a change, yes. Though it is a change that should be welcomed with an open mind rather than expecting what we would all see and watch as kids when those characters would stand aboard the USS Enterprise and go on adventures. The writing was on point, the acting was amazing, and the visuals all came together to tell that story. I would recommend anyone and everyone to go see this, but see it with an open mind. Expand

The success of the original was due of ALL thecrew members and their interactions, success, failure. I rewatched before Picard.
In addition here, no social agenda here. And a pleasure to see again, Commandant Data,Concelor Deanna Troi and Number One William Reeker, Hugh, hope there will be head of security, Lieutenant Worf. Not perfect but good stuff.

Ignore all the ratings of '0' and '1'; clearly severe cases of boomer nerd rage. This is a quality show and the people complaining about it not being real star trek should probably go back to watching reruns of Star Trek, The Next Gen.

The setting is more dark like DS9 and Star Trek Nemesis. It's also continuing th Nemesis story so that's all great.
I gave it only a 7 because of th horrible visuals. I find it hard to watch becausd of the constand powerfull background light. It's like they want to give every character this light halo. The result is hard to make out faces with lensflares all over the place. It's like some one is continually shining a flashlight in your face. It is anoying and distracting plus all visual detail gets lost.
And there is the new team. Not the most interesting set of characters played by mediocre to poor actors. There's not one I really like. Then again the directing leaves a lot to be desired. I could go on about lazy careless space ship design. However that has been a Star Trek problem ever since TNG. All in all not without hope but there is roon for improvement. So a 7

Season 3? As with both seasons 1&2, it started out great and that always worries me. Those worries were unfounded. I'll steal the argument from RLM that it's really the SNG movie we always wanted. A great resolution to all the characters. I really enjoyed it, and that kinda bothered me, lol. Lots of fan service and member berries, but I did dig the plot. Can't say I liked Picard's son or Beverly Crusher (and they did a bit of wokiness in making her a **** expert on everything; and that plastic surgery made her look lie the girl puppet from the Puppet Master movies). I never liked Beverly Crusher so it didn't shock me that I don't now. And thank god they didn't get Wesley. I think I heard he's dead by now? Good! Overall I was pleasantly surprised.

I went into this show wanting to love it, but thinking I might hate it, due to Patrick Stewart bringing up Brexit and Trump, and suggesting it was in opposition to those things in an interview. I am glad I didn't skip watching.

The first episode has quite a bit of action, considering that they still need to bring us into the new story line. Fight scenes are quite good. I am really digging the new android(s). When the episode was over, I was left with so many directions the story can go that I am excited to see what they choose.

The second episode is a bit slow. Picard is trying to get to the Android's twin, and is having trouble due to politics. It doesn't have much to love in it, but it does go into more information about how things have gotten to where they are. I am still hopeful that the story will get back to being as good or better than the original episode.

Anyway, don't let the idea that Picard is political get to you. It may be intended as a political statement, but it is not directly referencing anything current, so I don't think it will get too preachy.

I give it a five instead of a zero for the quality of the cinematography, screenplay and it was entertaining to (some degree). It IS deserving of a zero though for ripping off the name of and character while having nothing to do with the actual original source material.
There are so many reasons to flog this dumpster fire books could be written, but I would point out the most EGREGIOUS of them all.... Planting Picards Consciousness into a synthetic golem effectively nullifying death, soul, and the afterlife. There is so much wrong with that ability and the way it was treated and contradictions. So in this Picard universe, we see there is no belief in afterlife or immortal soul so it is somehow our short lives and ability to die that makes us special. So why revive him at all??? If the whole premise is true, are we supposed to believe that we are all so happy to just die into nothingness when we have lived an old age if we new it was Literally possible to be made into a new young body that would live forever?? So, they accomplished in science here what religious beliefs hold dear to but then just causally throw away the implications?? Oh, yea "I could have immortal life in a young body able to continue to love and explore..but nahh, I am just happy to die" Yea right. NO ONE who believed there was no afterlife, if given the opportunity to be made immortal into a young superhuman body would just casually disregard that. It's not just a game changer.. it's a game ender.

Once I accepted, based on the trailer, that this would be yet another dark and conflict-focused show, I did like what they came up with as the focus of the conflict, because it was a new type of being, which is good for a "Star Trek". And I allowed myself to be pleasantly surprised by the way they used somf of the old ST technology we were used to in some new ways (like for a certain fight scene).

But beyond that it's been disappointment after disappointment, and I haven't been able to watch most episodes without some fast-forwarding. First of all, most of the character writing and acting is bad, everyone's "too cool for school" and throwing snappy replies all over the place, just like the totally obnoxious characters from Discovery. Picard himself is unrecognizable, there's no serious and dignified attitude anymore, he never wears the uniform, never stands up for Starfleet's high principles, spends time with some ragtag band of misfits, which is completely un-Picard-like, and worst of all he's the focus of some strange "Picard Cult" the writers have created INSIDE the universe. WTH is that?! There was never any premise for that in TNG. He was just one of many Starfleet captains with healthy attitudes and principles, there was no reason to make him out to be this great hero that everyone knows about. He's a great hero for US THE VIEWERS, not in-world! It's very tiresome to keep seeing characters give all kinds of extreme reactions on finding out who he is, that was never what Picard was about - being a galactic rock star.

Really the only likeable character in all this is dr. Jurati, because she has some realistic non-superstar modesty and is well acted. The main female character, while she does have some humility, is not well acted at all, the actress they picked does not have enough emotional range, even though she's almost passable because she's at least not acting like a superstar all the time.

And while I fully expected there to be some throwbacks and a conversation or two about the good old days, it turns out that there's almost no episode without some sitting around the table scene, having a boring conversation about how things used to be and irrelevant stuff that happened in the past that does nothing to move the plot forward. This is just bad writing.

Then on the tech side they also failed to make this a "Star Trek", with the most annoying part being the ship interfaces, which have nothing whatsoever to do with the LCARS we used to know. I could forgive the fact that they went with this popular stupidity going around these days of making the GUIs transparent and therefore unnecessarily hard to read, but they could have at least preserved the general "okudagram" look, to make them feel like "real Star Trek interfaces" to us TNG fans. But no, they threw that part out as well.

Bottom line, there is no trekking, nobody's seeking out new life and new civilizations (we're practically served the new life on a platter in the first episode), and this is not Star Trek. Thank Seth we have The Orville, which I can't wait to see continue.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (Reviewing first episode) SPOILERS! This is clearly a vanity piece for Patrick Stewart, but I'm fine with this considering he is the character I want to see. They introduce an unnecessary superhuman female character early on, then kill her off, then she has an identical twin. Seeing as they had not bothered to develop the first twin in any meaningful way before killing her, she stands as the same person. This death and subsequent identical twin scenario is terrible writing to say the least. I enjoyed seeing Steward reprise the role. I also liked seeing data again in a cameo, which I am guessing will be the first of several. Stewart appears to be one of few 79yr olds who can survive being blown back by an explosive shock wave but perhaps he has a cyborg hip or something? The superwoman is not the reason I tuned in, but seeing as Stewart is (or at least should be) too old to do fight scenes, I'm ok with her doing a bunch of stunts to liven things up, hopefully they'll develop the character in a meaningful way throughout the series. Although, there is a setup in this episode for thinly veiled preaching about the political views of the writers, so far it isn't in-your-face-obnoxious like Discovery was. Overall, this offers much promise but, considering the poor pedigree of the writers I am less optimistic than I would like to be. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "Picard" is not a bad show, and it has sometimes been excellent, but season 2 was a convoluted disappointment. The premiere season showed great promise and had some great moments and episodes, including the final Picard/Data meeting. But season 2 was an undercooked and overloaded failure, with character behavior and creative choices that offered surprises but ultimately made no sense. (Spoilers coming.)

Season 1 introduced some truly interesting characters into Picard's world, including many Romulans and Vulcans, and turning Seven of Nine into one of the most dynamic figures of any Star Trek series. And there was Cristóbal Rios, a strong enough character (and a fine actor) to carry his own Trek spinoff. So what kind of insanity led the creators of this show to close season 2 by basically marooning Rios in the past, where his story is already complete and (centuries later) he's inevitably deceased (from an old man's bar fight?) in the Picard timeline. His choice to stay behind is nonsensical. Suddenly this skilled pilot no longer wants to fly? Staying in the 21st century for him is like you and I choosing to live in the 18th century. Why not just bring his new family into the future?

The show's device of using actors in different roles when the crew goes back in time makes no real sense. The connection between the identical twins in different timelines is never explained. Other than some vague emotional effect on Picard himself, why are Laris and Tallinn identical? Coincidence? Are they related somehow? We never really find out, probably because it was never truly figured out.

The special effects and most production values are excellent. Some of the forced drama and emotional breakdowns between the main characters (Raffi, a season Starfleet officer, is often alarmingly irrational for no reason) undercuts and clutters up the storytelling. There's just too much to get into here. (Like the transformation of the Borg.).

Season 1 would get a deserved high rating from me, but Season 2 was ultimately such a washout that my overall rating is mixed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So the new Picard. 2 eps in and I’m not going to say it’s bad (although I’m far from hooked) it does however dismally fail the Trek test by utterly disregarding (or more accurately sticking 2 fingers up that are on fire ) Genes cardinal rules around how Starfleet should work. Also to prove how new and edgy CBS are making Trek, last year I was a little surprised when Discovery drooped 2 F bombs in 30 seconds well we have got to the point where now ADMIRALS are dropping F bombs. (And, come on given how much I swear it takes a lot for me to raise eyebrows at swearing) *** Potential spoiler alert ahead.... ***

I’m also getting the nagging suspicion that we are looking at an alternative play on “All good things” where some if not all of the data plot is the adventures of a crew of care givers giving an old man one last tour and the conspiracy is just the delusions of a dying brain, mostly at the fact that this guy who’s supposed to be in his 90s now was blasted of his feet by a building wrecking blast and just woke up in his own bed. (And comments from other cast members) which I find will be an ignominious end to Jean Luc.

*** end spoilers ***

In other sci-fi news, avenue 5 is a thing, it’s hardly setting the Bar super high but frankly I’m more interested in where it’s going then Picard right now.

How can anyone read these reviews and determine whether to watch or not with so many 1s and 10s and little in between?! It's very reminiscent of and has the rhythm of STNG. Patrick Stewart, showing his 80+ years, is one of almost ten EPs but also stars. Though he was run out of Starfleet, this is a very fawning treatment of Picard (and certainly by extension Patrick Stewart). I mean this show is designed to adore and deify him and that really takes away from its appeal. There's a large scale intergalactic story happening here, and as such with his hastily cobbled together rag-tag crew recalls the original Star Wars trilogy - there are definite similarities. A few more things I didn't like: there was a fight scene in ep3 that was just stupid with an unarmed Picard and other unarmed colleagues beating back an attack of armed/trained Romulans, so that was a scene-fail. The repeated treachery AND forgiveness of Agnes Jurati, then, the season finale was epic but feels like three episodes edited into one which kind of ruined it - seriously, key people die then are immediately resurrected with no complications/ill-effects, etc. Probably the biggest disappointment is that the predetermined protags-must-prevail trope was so obviously done just dispensing with any realistic conflict. The finale could've and should've been GREAT but it marched to a Disney-patented good-guys-prevail ending and then there's all of the social justice signaling/indoctrination which we're all just so over. I started to watch S02 but it's just more Picard fantasy porn. Other misc stuff, you'll see some of your favorite STNG characters return glad-handing Picard in good 'ole reunion style (so annoying), but they've aged and gotten fat. Expand

Tonally the show runners and writers somehow managed to veer further away from Roddenberry's progressive family friendly Star Trek vision than Disco did which was very surprising, adding grotesque violence, drug used and to quote Spock himself colour language.

Why name it Picard and use TNG Characters and lore would be my question. Also to be fair that TNG and DS9 started weaker too (but not on this low level to be fair). Lets go to the first elephant in the room. I will not enter the debate if this is even Star Trek anymore but say I can see the validity of the argument. I am still thinking this is set in a darker parallel timeline or universe as I do not recognize how things could develop like this. I mean Starfleet, the Federation, many characters and choices. For example I say the antagonist have valid reasons and this comes from someone who would fight for Data’s and the Doctors rights even putting his live on the line. Both are favorites of mine and are more human than many biological humans. Again to be fair I would also say this also if the roles were reversed. You could however argue about cause and effect. It ends not there as Picard would never have Sometimes I thought it reminds me of the dirtier more grubby Star Wars look. The character or performance is a bit mixed. Patrick Steward as Picard is amazing and even haters acknowledge this. Jeri Ryan as Seven is hindered by the script and this weakened her. I must say that I am a fan of her and Seven of Nine was the best addition to a cast I can think of. Isa Briones surprised me positively and I want to see more of her. Michelle Hurd as Raffi is also handicapped by the script. I can see her being truly awesome if they put more effort in the writing. The rest is fine but I repeat many established characters are mishandled and this leaves a sour taste. Overall this is a weak first season with some good moments. Expand

Aside from a fairly boring story and the generous use of over exposition, the characters don't make sense. This is not Picard, and that's not Star Trek. The plot is just not engaging, they try to create a familiarity with the characters like we've seen them for years, but even the one we recognize don't feel right. They are nothing like their counterparts from previous shows and movies. And all new ones are just generic, burly rouge captain, a martial artist with anger issues, a snappy female companion that feels the need to explain everything to everyone in great detail. I'm sorry to everyone involved but's it's simply a bad show. Expand

The writing of this show just completely ruined it. The episodes drag really bad to the point where they can't hold interest. Lots of completely pointless and unbelievable dialogue.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The base layer, the foundation here is interesting. I can get behind a conspiracy plotline. I can get behind a corrupt Starfleet. I can get behind a post-Dominion Federation which is not the idealized version it was in the TNG era. The problem is that they are not handling any of it with tact, or subtlety. They keep answering things before the questions are ever even asked. It's silly, it's boring. Ep 1 - Daj has a twin sister and she's on a Borg cube!
Ep 2 - After NCISing this apartment we have figured out Daj's sister is in fact not on Earth.

Ep 2 - Commodore: "Attacking directly was stupid. There is no need for such actions no one believes him anyway."
Ep 3 - A super-subtle death squad storms the Picard chateau

Ep 1 - Daj blows up! In case it wasn't clear enough how fukken dead she is lemme show you Picard flying 50 feet backward from the shockwave.
Ep 3 - WHICH ONE ARE YOU THE ONE WHO IS ALIVE OR THE ONE WHO IS DEAD

Except, in true hack fashion I actually believe they will bring back daj to be some hockey macguffin. The writing is typical of kurtzman and post Abrams trek. Bland, predictable, crammed full of unnecessary action (hey, an old man is close enough to an explosion to be blown backwards 20 feet! It's cool though, we brought him to his couch to recover. He's good now.) I had really really hoped Picard (excuse me, JL) would be a return to classic trek is some way. I understand that tv is different than 30 years ago. There would be some changes but this is just.... Stupid. Characters make decisions that don't make sense, they over explain everything, they answers questions before they're ever asked. It's just... disappointing. Already cancelled my subscription. I can read the wiki, I'll get the same amount of emotional depth. At least the actors seem to be really trying, trying to work with what they're given.

Doesn't feel like a Star Trek series as in the fact that it goes against everything The Next Generation was all about ... the show is ok, love the acting and the actors but the plot and story is just ... bad and inappropriate.

Cringe worthy stuff. I have to force myself to finish an episode, IN THE HOPE that in the end it will all make sense.

A bi/lesbian seven of nine all of the sudden? completely kills the atmosphere of an otherwise mediocre sci-fi serie.

Also Patrick Stewart's dramatic over-acting is horrible and cringe to watch.

I’d heard rumors - that being an original TNG fan, that the makers of Picard never intended to entertain ME -

I genuinely got the impression they would rather I die. Almost an open disdain for what Star Trek used to be.
Did I hate everything? Of course not. I didn’t enjoy every episode of TNG, either...

But as objectively as I can be?
It felt rushed, flushed with incomplete story arcs, low on lore (ships) and high on selective fan service appearances - heavy amounts of political ramrodding. It was violent, vulgar and crass. The closing line from the finale I can’t get out of my head? “Did you f*ck any of them yet?” ... how edgy.

Nobody, not CBS, not Sir Stewart, not a paid critic can convince me this didn’t amount to anything more than a poor quality Star Trek spin off, brought to us by low talent show runners trying to make some merchandising by standing on the shoulders of what used to be an IP Giant. Do me a favor. If you enjoyed TNG as much as I did? Go check RLM Galaxies idea on YouTube... and it’s depressing how much more fun and Trekkie that would have been compared to... whatever THIS was.

Well thanks for trying, CBS. I’m not a vindictive or toxic person... but I’m afraid I can’t think of a single reason why I’d want to maintain a CBS subscription. Maybe next time you want to deploy a paid subscription service of your own, don’t license out your most popular IP to everyone and their mother to stream. We’ll, I’ll see y’all on amazon... or Netflix... or Hulu... ;)

In 2009 we got a movie that spawned two sequels and despite them bearing the name "Star Trek" they had the pacing and the feel of a "Star Wars" movies, yet I remained optimistic, at least Star Trek was back on the minds of others, a return to the TV will come, I was sure. Then the Discovery happened, and aside from abbreviation that was beyond amusing (can't wait for more STD?), it felt more like a spiritual successor to FarScape or Battlestar Galactica with much less heart, worse writing and hateable characters all with biotechnology more reminiscent of shows I mentioned than Star Trek. And now Picard is back, seemingly inspired by Firefly rather than Star Trek and all that despite it being supposedly a continuation to TNG. How come Star Trek is the farthest thing on my mind when I watch these? How is it possible to butcher a beloved franchise like this?
The writing is beyond poor. TNG or even DS9 could make a whole episode of just people talking into an amazing show and now, decades later, these techniques are nowhere to be seen! Decades pass and you don't learn from what you've done well, CBS? What's the point? To parade a defiled corpse of once freat franchise around for the amusement of no one? There's no spirit of Star Trek here. No Star Trek feel anywhere near this show. The writing is terrible, characters are one-dimensional caricatures of humans, much of the tech doesn't make sense (TNG sets were designed to be usable, LCARS can be implemented on modern devices and is fully functional, but clear glass screens? I can't imagine how hard it would be to focus on anything written there...), and the show is filled with easter eggs, cameos and scraps of lore in a poor attempt to endear the show to the fans, like dangling car keys in front of a toddler for distraction. As I am writing this, I just watched the 5th episode. I also watched the Sonic movie. CBS, do what the Sonic movie did, listen to the fans... it would silence us all and be profitable for you at the same time. Until then, I'm giving up on another Fake Trek.

Longtime Trekkies will not be interested in it for the reason mentioned above. Viewers new to the franchise will put it away after an episode or two, because there’s nothing there they haven’t seen already 10 times within the last 20 years both in terms of storytelling and visual effects. It’s beyond me how Sir Patrick Stewart agreed to have anything to do with this mess.

Even Seven-of-Nine is boring in this show. Can you imagine? Seven-of-Nine is boring!

The story line was like someone watched Battle Star Galactica and wanted to do a super low effort rip off of that in the star trek franchise. This show + Discovery are a show case of just how out of touch the new Series are with the Star Trek beliefs. If you are a Star Trek fan you are likely not going to enjoy this. I've watched all of the series and this and discovery are hands down the very worst of it all. That's saying something considering how cringe Enterprise was but at least it stuck to the Star Trek Values overall. Series rankings: 1. TNG
2. Voyager
3. DS9
4. Original (Yeah that's right I enjoyed it but it just didn't pull me in like the others)
5. Enterprise

Don't even want to list these two because it was so bad:

It's a classic Kurtzman show.

It's dystopian ( instead of being utopian ), dark and depressing ( instead of being uplifting and hopeful ), badly written despite being much easier to write drama in a darker, internal conflict ridden context versus writing in an utopian and uplifting, harmonious context. It still somehow manages to fall flat on its face with a blatant Mary Sue in the very 1st episode.

While it tries very hard to get the older intellectual tension addicts Trekkies back on board while not leaving behind the newer action and emotional ride addicts Trekkers from DIS and Kelvin, it seems to tend toward catering more to the later having already action scenes centered around the Mary Sue in the 1st episode and countless strange and out of character ( self-righteous ) Picard emotional scenes *cough* tv interview *cough*. And if the leaks are to be believed, the show is set to go full ADHD DIS after the first 3-4 episodes.

I had high hopes that the show would get Star Trek back to its harder utopian, uplifting, hopeful, we can do better and cooperate, brain stimulating roots. Sadly, the way it looks, I fear it's really just more of the same quicker, easier, more seductive Kurtzman mainstream wannabe money grabbing, dark and depressing dystopian, look how "edgy" it is, exhausting and draining internal conflict and petty bickering action/emotional rides we had since Kelvin.

Trekkers will love it, for everyone else, there's The Orville.

Nevertheless,I decided to try it in spite of all the negative press, and suffice it to say, I am disappointed. This is not a 'bad' show, per se; it is very well produced, well acted, and it is clear a lot of thought has gone into the story. Nevertheless, it is pretty much the opposite of what Star Trek represented. Here we have myopia and discontent, whereas previously the franchise was more associated with hope and wonder. I do not know why Sir Patrick decided that Star Trek was his personal possession and he was free to use it as a mouthpiece for his own unique, real life grievances. Again, that is basically the antithesis of Trek. It's a shame. I won't presume to speak for Roddenberry, but I did not like Discovery (at all. nothing redeemable), and I do not like this. It's great to see old, familiar faces, but as with Disney's Star Wars debacles, fan service only goes so far. If you are into it, go for it, but I will not be watching the rest, and I am probably done with the franchise. It is very sad that some of the best fiction of the past century has been reduced to little more than same-y pablum with cool CGI, but here we are. There is nothing to be inspired by here, and that too, is just not Trek.

As a last aside, to Sir Patrick: that world no longer exists? It was a fiction, it never existed. Ahem - that was sort of the whole point of the show. I am 'engaging' with the old stuff, instead.

Now it's a gritty world full of cartoon villains and morons. And since the writing is oafish, it tries to compensate by having a 15 minutes shoddy action sequence that doesn't serve the plot or the story. What a waste.

I thought STP could correct the course of Kurtzman Trek, but it keeps going the DCEU way. What a shame.

Picard is the only show that I hate watch. I want to like it, because it is Star Trek, but this show doesn't feel very Star Trek. It feels like a generic sci-fi adventure that brought in Star Trek actors so people would watch this 2 hourPicard is the only show that I hate watch. I want to like it, because it is Star Trek, but this show doesn't feel very Star Trek. It feels like a generic sci-fi adventure that brought in Star Trek actors so people would watch this 2 hour movie spread across 10 long hours. It takes three episodes to get a star ship to ya know... to trek around the stars. Two back to back episodes where nothing happens and a lot of downtime without drama, stakes or plot. The cold opens have suicides, mass murders, and utter violence rather than letting me get into episodes before showing me the gore.

As a show it feels like sitting around talking. Lots and lots of 2 people talking in a metal room. 20 - 30 minutes of it in single episodes. It's an utter struggle of boredom. Everything is so poorly lit that it all blends together. The Borg cube is dark, the hero ship is dark, the only thing with light is Picard's Chateau that they bring the Chateau with them when they finally take off for space. The Chateau is a part of Earth and doesn't feel very Star Trek, but there I go hoping for a new Star Trek and then when it's given to us it's spent on Earth the first few episodes except for a Borg Cube that's just sitting there for the season struggling to exist except for to be part of a Romulan plot to show villains discussing villain things while trying to not have sex together despite being brother and sister. Yeah... you heard me.

People smoke, people drop F bombs, people drop hints of cash and money in a time where Earth did away with that sort of thing. I can understand when it's civilians, but did the Federation give up trying to hold its people to a higher standard or did the writers just forget that the Trek Universe is to be a higher standard? People with big houses complaining it's a hovel. Tacked on scenes where a character tries to reconnect with her son that she was too busy for despite never hearing about the son before. There are plenty of these side stories that don't really go anywhere, but every character seems so haunted by their past or just a murderer.

Another flaw with that Borg cube is that it struggles to have a place. One character is just on a Borg ship for two episodes away from the cast. No one seems to want this character back despite knowing exactly where he is and Picard knowing him since he was a boy, he doesn't seem to rescue him. Speaking of one character on the Borg ship, another member of the cast starts out on a Borg ship away from the cast and she seems to be the plot, to rescue her, only she gets rescued and then there's nothing at stake. The plot fizzles and it feels utterly pointless. Previous Star Trek series have single episodes where they come up with solutions that save planets and save lives. There seems to be a Federation without actually having a Federation beyond an admiral and a commodore. Everything you knew about Trek is just wiped away. The Federation won't help the Romulans when their sun goes super nova, a thing that can be predicted centuries if not millennia in advance. Picard taking all the blame for not helping the Romulans enough when he was the guy helping. The show loves to harp on that.

The biggest glaring problem is that if you aren't invested in this 10 episode storyline it turns into a chore to watch. Even they forget the storyline which revolves around saving a girl who is a dead comrade's daughter. Once she is safe, nothing happens. The drama ends and it turns into a holding pattern of fluff. It's tough to watch Picard struggle with lines with his age, that I pray is a character quirk and not the real Patrick Stewart struggling.

I feel like there were two strong episodes, the first and the halfway point where everything felt like it paid off, but I can't tell if I felt it was good from watching 3 or 4 hours of dull television or if it was actually good. There were hints of episodes that felt like Star Trek where a space crew would go off to a planet, land, do things, and then leave, even if they weren't saving the world or entertaining me.

I'd love to feel that this was a great show because I love Star Trek and that's the only reason I keep watching. Most Star Trek series have bad first seasons, but I felt like this was an awful chore to sit through. Now I love hate watching Picard or I would have given up on it a long time ago like so many other dull shows or bad science fiction shows.

Long time fan, I've seen all of TNG, Voyager, DS9,Enterprise and most of The Original Series, many of the TOGNothing makes sense. I am so confused as to when and where this show takes place, why things happen and....all in the first episode. Long time fan, I've seen all of TNG, Voyager, DS9,Enterprise and most of The Original Series, many of the TOG and TNG era movies and all of the trash JJ movies that are in a different timeline.

1. What timeline is this? They make it seem like the movie timeline mixed with the series timeline. That doesn't work imo. But I can only assume the following conflicts are because this series is based %100 on the JJ movies, because the errors otherwise make no sense in some cases.

2. Picard doesn't act like himself. He is always on the defensive, is dishonest to himself, and stupidly overly trusting.

3. the wiriting is awful. Behind the pretty cinematic stuff, is writing that makes you wonder who talks like this!?

4. Somehow B4 is a "copy" of data. No, Data is the culmination of research, and B4 is an earlier version. Also not aknowledged is that Lore exists.

5. Picard didn't ever have such a hard on for Data. No, he didn't trust him all the time and he would never lie about that. He would be honest, and say, "I treated Data like anyone else, if I disagreed, I'd contest it, but I trusted him as an excellent officer and he saved our crew and myself multiple times, he was reliable. Data was imperfect, and he sought his own humanity."

6. I guess we are calling androids "synths" now because it sounds cooler in 2020 than android.

7.why does Picard wake up after the fight scene in his house instead of a hospital unscathed from a f***ing explosion? Wouldn't the police want to question him? Wouldn't there be something? I honestly thought they were implying it was a dream he was having again until his home workers talked to him about what happened. That whole scene was a big WTF.

8. No the necklace isn't interesting, it is a generic boring silver thing. Why didn't they make it actually look interesting? It was so silly.

9. Are his helpers supposed to be Romulans? I genuinely don't know. They look like Vulcans to me, there is no skin tint, no V ridge on the forehead, but they are emotional, so thus can't be vulcan right? Are they Vulcans who adopted their emotions? There is no explaination. They could be the children of vulcans and romulans, but that would be incredibly rare and the idea that two such people are working for him it just makes no sense, I still don't get it. Romulans looked like vulcans only in TOS. So I guess maybe there is some incompetence here. EDIT: After episode 2 it is clear the make up artists don't want to have to do prosthetics, so the main characters who are romulans don't have the forehead ridges, but any background character looks CLEARLY Romulan. So it is just a matter of laziness, not design choice. So yes, it will be impossible to tell a Romulan from Vulcan in some cases until they open their mouth.

10. The 21st century millennial teenager level discourse between two grown ass adults was embarrassing. I'm kind of glad both of them got killed in the first episode to end that.

11. Why put a bag over her head when he said "knock her out". Hi, you have phasers, they have a stun setting. The amount of times I've heard "set phasers to stun" in Star Trek made me as a kid think they couldn't kill until later when I watched through in a binge run of the shows that they did have a higher setting. I know there is other types of weapon tech besides phasers, but I don't give the show writers credit for knowing that since they F***ed up so much basic stuff.

12. This robot girl is not Data's daughter...no really objectively she can't be. I recalled him making a child, and this isn't it. They are retroactively changing what happened and aren't acknowledging what happened before.

13. AT LEAST IT LOOKS PRETTY I GUESS HERP DERP DERP.

14. Oh and I guess yeah Patrick Stewart is a good actor. I mean, he makes everyone look stupid, and even he can make the writing not sound so awful as he acts it out.

15. If this show weren't Star Trek, it would be able to be good and its own thing. However this is trying to appropriate Star Trek's name for ratings and views to tell a non-trek story. Maybe don't be cowards and look at good stand alone Sci-Fi. This show feels more like the Expanse(but still more poorly written dialogue). It would be middling, but it would at least stand on its own and make more sense in a new fresh fictional universe with more freedom. But because this is Star Trek, it has to be judged through that context, and this is a terrible continuation of the star trek universe. Oh well, at least I DO have other things to watch. I'll change my review if the show gets better, but I rarely find shows get better if the first episode doesn't work for me.

The 3 is for Patrick Stewart carrying the show with his acting chops and the CGI, those people NEVER get credit(see life of pi film where they were never given credit at awards).

It's bad, lots of poor writing and poor acting. Not worth your time. Patrick Steward should've retired instead of doing this.

I'm guessing those who made this tripe never really watched all 7 seasons of TNG because there is nothing vaguely familiar between this and TNG. And since when do Androids age and put on weight? That opening scene was terrible and 4 episodes in very little has happened. I remember when each Episode of TNG had a reason and a moral lesson but now it seems they are trying to turn it into a long and drawn out feature film. It just doesn't work. Face it, when Gene died so did any semblance of the Star Trek we know and loved.

This is so painful to watch. If you are new to Star Trek try watching The Next Generation first then watch this. It's an insult to Star Trek to credit this as based on TNG because it just isn't.

This is NOT Star Trek. It's not positive, it's not a family show. If you want Star Trek watch The Orvil. Unless both these new Star Treks gain a new direction I give them 3-4 seasons max. Unless both these new Star Treks gain a new direction I give them 3-4 seasons max. What happened to the future where all earth problems were solved and we seek out new places? The old Treks had PC characters without Shoving them in your face. The first Star Trek had men wearing dresses and it wasn't an entire event. Will one episode every contain a plot and ending? Do I have to watch the entire series filled with 1 good episode and 9 fillers? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Imagine sitting down with your kids to share your love of Star Trek with them by watching the new show.

Imagine the nightmares they'll have after watching a man's eyeball graphically pulled out of its socket.

Imagine having to explain to them why everyone in the future swears like a sailor.

Imagine this is supposed to be Star Trek... oh wait... no one has that level of imagination.

Not recommended.

Like most reviewers here I am a Star Trek fan. Unlike most I didn't get into the show until later in life but I have watched all the T.V. series (Besides the 60's original, I am in my 30's and it is just too dated) and most of the movies. Unlike most I didn't get into the show until later in life but I have watched all the T.V. series (Besides the 60's original, I am in my 30's and it is just too dated) and most of the movies. I love the idea that Star Trek puts forward. A future where humanity has or is striving to rise above our negative traits. Where there is no more currency and Earth is basically a paradise. Humanity is for the most part seeking to work together with all alien races for the betterment of all. This show is not at all that vision. This is Star Trek twisted into a GOT wannabe. The dialogue is stilted and character actions unbelievable. A character kills her husband and 20 minutes later everyone forgets and it is never thought about again. There are little glimpses of greatness especially when they bring back characters from TNG for a short cameo. But overall this is a terrible show something you would find on SyFy at 3AM Expand
