This show feels like it's a desperate attempt to tick as many boxes as possible. Unoriginal, boring, not funny. Whoever thought this was a good idea needs to be fired, seriously.

Lower Decks, a subpar rip-off of The Orville, which itself ironically is closer to Star Trek than anything officially produced by Alex Kurtzman, is a new comedy webseries without any humour.

It stars an obnoxious, loud character who doesn't understand the concept of personal space and enjoys telling everyone they're wrong because she's always right according to her.

It's like the animated adventures of STD's Michael Burnham, with grating personality to match.

The show's producers claim Lower Decks is canon but none of the characters behave like they're Starfleet officers or even mature adults.

Avoid this latest disaster from CBS at all cost and watch The Orville and Final Space instead.

Just horrible on every level. Cliche characters, lame "clever" writing. Every male character is a sniveling weakling, every female is strong and independent. Lazy, boring, and a terrible use of Star Trek IP.

Again, the male mostly white colleagues are boring and stupid and their diligence and work ethic is mocked. All of this should come across as funny and cool, but it isn't because it is always at the expense of the weaker (Boimler) and not so cool. To mock the character and work ethic of colleagues over and over again has nothing to do with a good parody, it is bullying. Lower Decks portrays bullying as cool and hip and packages the whole thing as a funny and witty parody of Star Trek. Disgusting! Expand

Well, I made an account here just to tell people how much I hate this show.
I gave it my best shot, going into each of the 6 episodes so far with an open mind and trying gamely to find a bit of real humor in all the paint-by-number plots, over-the-top-stupid everything and annoying Saturday-morning cartoon vibe. There's nothing there. There's nothing to like. I'm going to stop trying.
To CBS: This will never, ever work as a show. PLEASE CANCEL IT. For the love of god, just CANCEL IT. It hurts me to know that money is being spent on this show.

Its themes mostly revolve around interpersonal drama. The dialogue often feels like it is made for angsty-teens. The characters act like children most of the time. It pretty much breaks all the rules the franchise established to keep its quality high and its stories unique and engaging. Overall, ST:LD is your average teen to young adult animation show, sometimes okay, sometimes cringe-worthy, sometimes intolerably immature and violent. Don't expect something with the whit or charm of shows like Futurama. This is more Cartoon Network in the early 2000s. Expand

It has a Rick and Morty-esque feel to it. I think whoever wrote this is forgetting...this is STAR TREK. We want smart dialogue. We wanted something that engages the mind, makes us question whether it was right or wrong. That was the things I loved about TNG, DS9, even Voyager. They presented actual dilemmas, and showed consequences. The new stuff is "this way is right, everything else wrong!" And don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind a comedic Trek, but keep what Star Trek is supposed to be first and foremost! Expand

Seriously, this show doesn’t have any of the heart that the source material has. That includes the Kelvin timeline. The idea for this is one of those things that sounds fine on paper, but the writing - and I’m using that term loosely - is boring as balls. It’s just not well executed in its pacing and the introduction of characters. With all of the Star Trek universe at you’re disposal you come up with the same characters you find in the same situations from all the above mentioned shows that it “steals” from. And Star Trek had better be careful here because right now having another show accused of borrowing from other writers isn’t something that they need right now.

I don’t think that the voice acting is bad, but the characters are very one dimensional. I don’t even like the visuals as they too “borrow” too much from other current sci-fi comedy cartoons.

All that said if you liked this show that’s fine. Just know that there are much better ones out there for comedy. Even “Be Cool Scooby-Doo” had better writing and wit than this. "Solar Opposites" is another one that brings the sci-fi and interesting characters. I didn't care too much for the second season of "Final Space," but the first one was solid and offered a great story that had me excited to watch the next episode. Man, who would have thought that Seth Macfarlane would have the best current “Star Trek” show.

These writers understand nothing of Star Trek, and refuse to actually watch the previous shows. This leads to innumerable issues, and misuse of what they learned off of the internet pages they read. So she is a little bit like Burnham mixed with Tilly from discovery, if you want to say this nicer you could say she is like Han Solo from Star Wars. In my humble opinion the sheer amount of insubordination by Beckett clearly shows that she is unfit to be a starfleet officer in the TNG era and that is ruining the show. Especially since in my opinion Star Trek shows should not have a main protagonist and instead be an assemble show. Having the most anti-star trek character in a show be the main character of a star trek show is a very questionable decision.

I also really have a problem with the portrayal of black woman by secret hideout. This is the second show with a black female lead that suffers from lack of values, mental health problems and personality disorder.

The first episode is ok, the second episode a catastrophe, the third one is good and the forth one is excellent.

How nerds are treated in this show also lets you question the sanity of the writing staff given the main star trek audience. For example in Episode 3 before the opening credits Beckett nerdshames Brad in front of his audience while he does an nerdy musical dance performance. This is like the 10th instance in which Brad is bullied by Beckett. Take a close look at the face from Brad while he is lead around in a headlock by Beckett at the end of episode 1. This is textbook bulling 101. If you don't understand this, please go to wikipedia and read the article about bulling. There seem to be a lot of people who don't understand what is the difference between ribbing, bulling and conflict.

The show doesn't stick enough to canon, protocol is too often ignored, there is a lack of decency and overall a lot of stuff is badly done. Still, going forward, if there are more episodes like episode 4 then this will be the best star trek show produced by secret hideout by far.

If you lost faith with Discovery, give this a chance, just don't expect to take it seriously. This show is hilarious to anyone with a sense of humor short of "half-blooded vulcan". Expand

This one works as a comedy or canon ST, hopefully appealing to fans of either and both. I love how in the opening sequence it shows the Romulans fighting the Borg, which represents the current worldwide political situation. The ship promptly turns away, saying "Nope!". This is sage advice for most people. The people downvoting this show clearly have taken one of the sides of Borg or Romulan. These people are angerballs and should be ignored and/or otherwise cut out of the positive life you mean to live. Watch Star Trek: Lower Decks !! Expand

First: I think writing a review before you watch first season is premature, but here I am, because of all reviews of people who watched the first episode and wrote a review prematurely.

I enjoyed it. It's funny. Characters are interesting and there is a room for growth for all of them. If you liked Final Space or Rick and Morty, and you would like to see something like that mixed with TNG you will probably enjoy it too.

All I'm saying: give it a chance, you might be suprised - I was (after watching all those negative reviews on youtube).

It is a lot better than Discovery and Picard. It does not have this deppressing and opressive atmosphere of those shows.

I would refer you to a review by Lore Reloded, that I found very helpful.

Keeps getting better and better until by the end I'm convinced the only ones still hating it are the ones who didn't watch it.

It's the real next iteration of Star Trek - forget Discovery or Picard, those are written by people who really don't understand and/or don't care about the spirit and lore of Trek. This show captures that joy of discovery, of what it means when self-discovery leads to you being a better person, contributing to a better world, in which all walks can learn and grown from each other. This show gets you jumping out of your damn chair when at the climax, butt is kicked, day is saved, and we're all better for it. If you have been hankering for a real good Star Trek show, something we've been waiting for since Voyager (...or Enterprise), then this is the show for you. And even for the folks that like Discovery and Picard, they may find themselves loving this show too. This isn't endless references, but a show that gets what Trek is and can inspire, and wants to inspire in you. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just binged the first season in a weekend. I'll back up a little - I've been watching Trek since TNG. I recall having a literal fit of excitement when the TV spot for The Best of Both Worlds II aired back in the late 80's. What I am trying to say is, I have been with Trek for a long time and to me, it is the show that defines science fiction. I take the franchise and its message of futurism and optimism seriously. That being said...

The pickings at the Trek table have been pretty slim lately. I watched ST:Enterprise in the early 2000's and that was the first time I was genuinely disappointed in a Trek show. It wasn't all bad, but it wasn't great either. I picked up All Access to watch ST:D, and have made it through one and two-thirds of a season. Similarly, I made it through about half of ST:P. All of these shows have similar problems, particularly the more recent examples. They have good (even occasionally spectacular) production values, good actors and serviceable scripts. They don't lean too heavily on sci-fi jargon, which is a Trek trope as much as rubber-forehead aliens are. But, and this is my opinion, they are not fun. ST:D and ST:P commit the unforgivable sin of being largely pretty and largely boring. In my opinion, they lean into the grimdark too much for Trek. They are trying to be GoT or something similar. Perhaps that is a reflection of the world in which we live, but it hasn't been a good one for entertainment that is optimistic about the future. All of this doesn't say anything about the movies, and I don't want to digress into that particular pit, but here we are.

With all that out of the way, I want to say that I loved this series. Finally - a Trek show that was not afraid to have a good time. A Trek show that recalled the giddy energy of someone who might be seeing the future through the eyes of Gene Roddenberry for the first time. This show is not perfect. It is limited by its format of 24 minute episodes, so it feels a little clipped and bare-bones at times. The characters, even the main two or four, feel like cutouts of character archetypes that we have seen elsewhere. That doesn't mean they aren't well-written, just that the character tropes trod over very familiar ground. One other thing about this show is that it's straight comedy with a sci-fi bent. Think Rick and Morty but populated by less awful characters. The humor is mostly adult with abundant swearing peppered in and bleeped out. Not sure if this was a post- or pre-production choice, but I think it's the right one. There is blood and gore, but not so much as to be distracting. The animation is sharp and bright, the ships are cool and we get a few cool cameo's (Frakes gets to be in every dang thing Trek, doesn't he?) here and there. I want to convey that I enjoyed just about every minute of this show, more than I have anything Trek in a long time. I know we're getting season 2, and I am very happy about that. I can only hope that sooner or later, the more optimistic tone that this little show has rediscovered makes it back into Trek at large. I won't say we need it, but I do think people deserve to be optimistic again. Strongly recommended.

First Its humour works and second, the characters give an intriguing perspective on the world of StarTrek. I ve given "only" a 7, because to me the humour, well it s not really inventive or original. It s the one we constantly see in US cartoon sitcoms. And it clearly aims to be Futurama (from Mariner to Leila it s not a huge step) but the punchlines are not to be able to hold a candle to Groening´s. But thats not the point (it s funny nonetheless). What I really want to point out, is the fact, that its lacks innovation (not inventive). I think all those trekkies amongst us expected just that. Bottom Line: I am bit dissapointed, but I cant wait to watch the next season. Expand

I almost passed it up due to the ratings on this site but i decided to give it a chance. The characters are JUST what they need to be to give this show some substance and make it easy to continue the story with these characters and still keep it Star Trek. When i say STAR TREK... I mean come on guys.. Its a CARTOON....those of you looming for a completely SERIOUS show should stick to the actual STAR TREK.... This is a CARTOON and it parodies the show but thats what males it GREAT. It puts the characters in unknown situations and unexpected dangers to have them. And pulls them through it while entertaining us all with the jokes that a comedy cartoon would.... Think Solar Opposites but in the star trek universerve. VERY GOOD SHOW AMD IT HAS REPLAY VALUE to really see what makes the show stand apart from others Expand

And it keeps most positive Star Trek values alive.

The negative reviews aren't wrong per se. The series is likely hit or miss depending on your protectiveness or conservatism about Star Trek form. But on substance it's first degree fun with second degree good positive values.

The characters are light-hearted and fun. Seeing what life is like for the lower ranks on a starship is novel and allows the story to deviate from and make fun of the series norms. I actually think it fits nicely into the Trek universe. I like the return to the episode-of-the-week style of story-telling as it makes it easier to rewatch the best episodes. I really enjoyed the playfulness and shenanigans of this series and look forward to seeing more. Expand

Most of it is not funny.
