At this point I wondered if I was watching bloody Harry Potter! The whole thing was an utter shambles. There was some contrived space flying sequence that went on for so long and yet was so utterly pointless and boring that I skipped through the whole thing and felt like I missed nothing. Then we have the engineer who is suddenly the most amazing doctor star Fleet has ever seen because as she said "I know how to read books". Excuse me?? I can't repeat enough what an absolute mess this is. I don't know what the hell they are playing at, season 1 was okay, I was hoping they might consider making some improvements. Alas no.

I had some hope that they would listen to the critics they received for the first season, but sadly no.. Being an avid Star Trek fan this feels like a big joke. I recommend you instead watch the Orville as its much closer to the Star Trek spirit.

Terrible, science-less fiction, sad attempts at humor, trying to copy Orville.
Senseless, brainless, soulless, flashing lights driven entertainment for 4 year olds.
Even worse than season 1. TOS and TNG did better stories on a shoe string budget, every week!
So sad, its like someone wants to intentionally kill the dream.

Visually stunning and very well made, but it's moving more towards a fantasy format rather than sci-fi and personally I found it just.. lame. The characters seem unprofessional and under-qualified. The science of the technology seems childish and uninspiring. Shame really.

TL;DR - The First season was better than this at least in terms of Plot Writing. Character wise S2 is Superior than the First Season, instead of improving both key elements it seems the writers traded one for the other.
S2 had far more cringe-worthy character dialogue writing and WTF narrative elements and Wait What... story/plot writing than the first. The VFX is still the best they have every been and the characters were a little better this time around but the plot progression and the over arching narrative was degraded to a Saturday morning cartoon show.
This is, in terms of 'Making Sense by it's own Narrative' farthest from anything Trek-like we have got and fails even more so by it's own internal logical choices and decisions.

Um What.... ?? What was that ?? I have so many questions and so many things that did not make sense at all. Especially in the last 3 or so episodes.
Why did the entirety of Discovery crew follow Burnham into the wormhole ?? Was the auto pilot unable to do so ? Why is Burnham able to make multiple jumps but unable to lead the crew of the Discovery back after they neutralized Control ?
How did Saru's Sister and Kelpians learn to pilot cruisers into Heavy battle situation over a matter of what seems like weeks from barely learning they are not just cattle for culling? How did the Technological Superior Ba’ul submit and let the Kelpian's pilot their cruisers? Were the Kelpian's able to withstand and understand warping when they have never done and or trained to do so?
Why was the Klingon CHANCELLOR unable to bring more star ships into battle ? How Did Tyler manage to get on-board or for that matter in contact with a Klingon cruiser and L'Rell without the fear of Klingon Backlash of a Lying Chancellor??
How did Enterprise manage to hold so many shuttles when it was clearly smaller to Discovery as shown by the obvious size difference side by side ? Could they not use the spore Drive and Jump to Federation headquarters to apprise them of the situation and then jump to the fifth red signal location so that Federation Star-ships could join in ?
Didn't they build the Suit based on Mama Burhnam's Suit which would therefore carry over the tether like aspect of being pulled back ?? If it was possible to have a fully functioning suit without the glitch did it not strike Mama Burhnam to seek someone out and fix the issue of the tether pulling her back repeatedly ? Why did Discovery make the time-jump if they were able to neutralize Control before they did it ?
Also I do not understand the need to lie to the Federation about what really happened, was there any reason to this other than wanting to wipe them from the original TOS timeline ?

Where S1 lacked a strong character developments we get those in spades as Capt. Pike and just about everyone else makes up for the bad taste of Lorca's sudden betrayal and Burhnam's one note previously. VFX as expected in 2019 are top notch with everything looking good and believable.
However the Story suffers this time as a lot of 'Inexplicably Convenient' and or 'Does not make sense but goes by so fast that you cant question It' things keep happening. And they try to swing it by you so fast so that you don't get a moment to question the logic of what they are trying to pull out of their @sses.
Enterprise should have been left out completely since only Cpt. Pike was a welcome breath of fresh air as I believe Anson Mount nailed the Firm, Stern yet Hopeful and Encouraging Tone of his character. Spock was well adequate as a Vulcan would say; he fails to come off as anything more than just another Vulcan and not rise as Spock.

All is all it was quite a let down. I would like to see S3 as the characters grew on me, but they really need better and more sensible writing and over arching plot. Also I still have issues with this show being set in the past rather than a far flung future as I would appreciate new characters and new Star-ships rather than relying on the same old same old. A parallel universe was the only way I managed to distance myself into watching the show and not comparing it to the older more grounded, relatively speaking; Star Trek iteration, which the show itself manages to mess up every time they show or reference something from the TOS timeline.

It's also fascinating that a series about the Discovery doesn't end its season with the Discovery in the final scene (they're trying to set up more spin-offs). Some episodes are so packed with "stuff" and contradictions that I didn't even care to follow the plot in a logical sense anymore. At least this season tries to fix some continuity issues that were introduced with Star Trek: Discovery.
Michael Burnham is still supposed to be the hero of the series, but since she's not the captain of the Discovery, she's not in a position to make the big decisions, yet she has all the answers and rebels without consequence (because she's always right in the end). I don't remember most of the other shallow crew members. The bridge crew is more or less cardboard displays and the plot revolves mostly around Michael Burnham who I do not like as a character. Captain Pike is the only bright spot in this season.
As for the production, the series is well done. There are annoyingly overused light glares, but the costumes, masks, and visuals are very good at movie level. The Star Trek easter eggs (props) are neat. All in all, I wish they had invested the budget in better scripts, stories, and dialogues.

I quit watching the new Magnum after episode 2 (loved the original), and ST:D doesn't fare much better. Hawaii-5-O at least showed some landscape eye candy from time to time between a retarded plot twist and a nonsense decision by a totally not credible "task force commander"... sigh.

Season 1 of ST:D was meh, but I still watched it till the end. The spore drive and then the mirror universe somehow managed to maintain drive, but wouldn't have succeeded without Michelle Yeoh. What a graceful beauty at over 50!!
Can't say the same about "Michael". The hairdo is absolutely hideous, and the acting, especially in season 2, unbearably emotional - I can't imagine how someone like that could have successfully studied on Vulcan? hello?

Speaking about emotional, somewhere at about the middle of season 2 I started to fast forward many of the Spock-Michael scenes which add nothing to the plot *yawn*. I was there wishing for Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley to come back and free me from boredom.

Captain Pike seems totally emasculated, not in control of anything, okaying several decisions that are totally unthinkable for a starship captain.

I could go on and on about what's not "on trek" with ST:D, but I don't want to spend hours writing.
But wow, this was so bad.

Overwrought nonsense. Obviously written by committee. They seem to want a moment of deep significance every minute or two. In the end this leaves none of those moments little significance. It needs a moment to breathe. The production values are high and the cast seems capable but the terrible writing holds it back. Also there is constant pandering.

STD’s dialogue is poorly written and never feels genuine. Pseudo emotional monologues alternate between wooden exchanges where characters finish each other’s sentences. Conversations are scripted in a strange way, describing what is happening for the benefit of the viewing audience rather than depicting genuine interactions. Plots are absurd; based around fantasy and magic instead of science fiction. The writing is a politically over-corrected mess, where male characters are given diminished standing and respect. Continuity has been abandoned; plot holes and contradictions litter each poorly written episode.

There are glimpses of genuine star trek and elements of a good show but these only serve to remind ‘what could have been’.

Star Wars had a chase through an asteroid field, let's have characters drive recklessly through an asteroid field, for no reason.
Jet packs are always cool. Lets do that.
Characters repelling down a cliff are cool, let's do that. Even though we have jet packs and don't need to repel ever.
Let's be insubordinate to the Captain and tell him he's wrong. Zero consequences for that behaviour.
Babylon 5 had a cool quirky character Zathras who could fix anything. Let's get one of those. Make it female this time though. Not nearly enough female characters in the show. Note to self, let's kill off a make character as often as possible.
Trek people like references from previous shows. Let's mention Tribbles. Even though Tribbles were unheard of to the crew of the Enterprise ten years later.
Let's sneeze in the elevator. Sneezes are always funny.
Let's have a big big story about this red thing. It's scary and dangerous. Why? Why do our characters think it is scary or dangerous? Never mind, it just is. Have a Tribble question boy.

All of the above is no substitute for a story, let alone a good story.
Take $50k - $100k out of the special effects budget and use it to PAY A WRITER for a good story.

    2. visuals and action
    3. less serious and more entertaining, which brings me back to the silly episodes on the old star trek series.
    4. More character development and more focus on "deck extras"

    cons
    1. characters feel really stupid and incompetent, if your looking to see calculated decisions its not for you. All decisions made feel more like a last minute gut feeling which turn out to be a lucky shot.
    2. Plot of the whole series (that binds the episodes together) doesnt glue you to the seat, you dont really care about it, season 1 was better in that matter
    3. I think the show tries to make references to something every single scene, im just not that deep in the trekverse to understand it, but im sure they are there.

I dont believe this is a badly written season. Its written way better then season one. Every plot is connected somehow, nothing ends as a loose end, stories and mini stories feel complete and well thought through. By describing James. T Kirk, as the "Much whiter and much much blonder" GUY.

Also that fake body positivity theme, really went sour when chubby Tilly outran an entire staff of much slimmer and fitter extras, in a half marathon.

Does this show not have science and military advisers? Because both are bad on this show. Mutiny is not tolerated and carries a mandatory death sentence in pretty much every military throughout history up until current day. And then this complete Mary Sue of a character starts a war that killed billions of beings, but she is the hero and is just so amazing and the best at everything. Plus this genocidal mutineer has the temerity to talk down to her commanding officer which at the very least should earn her a trip to the brig. But not for Mikey Spock. And the actress that portrays Mikey Spock is a talentless hack and should be on daytime TV at best.

I'm a lover of all things Star Trek, so I loved the fresh on the series that was for the first time dark, and it kept getting darker. The plot twists were absolutely fantastic and well thought out. This felt like the best series since Star Trek TNG. But low and behold, the Trekkies who want nostalgia had to ruin it. I knew once they fire the producers of the first season I knew it was going downhill.

The first season had its issues, but for the most part, the amazing storyline and plot kept it moving, now without the grimness of war with amazing sci-fi ideas and space exploration mixed in, the series is left with trying to be the old Star Treks which like "Enterprise" it fails MISERABLY short. The captain is a total pushover; there is endless drama with no payoff or consequences and surreal teaching moments every five minutes. It's almost like the writing is done by committee and we are getting a grimacing look at just how undeveloped the characters are. It's almost as if they have lost their focus and now things are just being thrown on the wall.

So I vehemently disagree with the Trekkies who didn't like the first season. I am not beholden to the past, but what I am beholden too is good watchable sci-fi, and this isn't it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just cancelled my amazon cbs all access channel over episode 2 of this season. I wanted to like this season, and I waited until the second episode to see if I could figure out if the problems would continue or it was just episode 1. The problem is that the red angel story seems to be a way to dig at religion, not christianity, but all religion even the religions of those that are spiritual but not religious.

Adding pike and all the other changes don't make up for this, because of the fundamental problem with the show -- Micheal Burnham. The main character who no one challenges in anyway. In episode two Michael was very vocal about religion being a lie. She was backed up by another person on the away team, and Pike seemed to be the counter point, but really did nothing and didn't openly challenge her.

What is worse is Burnham is a hypocryte, both from a star trek cannon perspective and season one perspective. She is religious. She believes in the katra or spirit which was established in season one. Her logic is a religion. So for her to dump on Buddhism specifically makes her pretty hypocritical since is very close to her beliefs. On top of that TOS Movies, TNG, and Enterprise specifically refer to the vulcan logic as their religion.

So Burnham at best comes off as a religious zealot that does not care about others beliefs. At worst because no one challenges her ever -- that religion is a lie is the writer's perspective and that this is a lecture to the watcher.

Urgh, this show is so tedious to watch, its overly reliant on CGI and lacks storyline, originality and a compelling script. The endless search for Spock, that is interrupted by pointless problems week after week and outlandish violations of everything Star Trek used to stand for. I finally came to my personal conclusion not to watch this anymore, I have better things to do than watching this complete waste of time.

There is this one new male pilot that is criticizing Michael and while hes doing so, he is hit by a meteorite and dies lol The other male lead, the alien with precognitive powers, is very feminine and not a good fighter at all. This new season is like a fusion between Greys Anatomy and Star Trek lol the episodes revolve around talking about their feelings and family relations. I miss the old Star Trek format where in each new episode theyd find and explore a different alien civilisation. The second season in particular, with the addition of Captain Pike, has been a true pleasure to watch.

It is only one episode and it still has flaws, but the biggest problem with it is fans who have already made up their mind that they will never watch this and want to attack it, yet illustrate that they do not properly understand trek themselves. Like complaining about every little thing about the show and then turn around and complain about the show not having any consistency when they try to change it for the better.

You can see as much in the other reviews here condemning this season for the flaws of last season and directing you to go watch the Orville as if that is somehow trek. These people dont want new trek, they just want to rewatch the trek they already have with slightly updated visuals, which is basically what they are getting with Seth Mcfarlanes plagiarism of Trek but is not anywhere near up to that pedigree.

This episode has shown infinitely more attention to detail and is much more respectful of Trek. Referencing not only TOS era but seeing obscure and nuanced lines drawn to other eras of Trek. For example the awesome Barzan engineer from Enterprise pike brings with him that many people who think they are trek fans have completely missed.

It still has a few missteps here and there.. They knew they would need to make a big impact with the first episode to have any hope of holding onto an audience for the season. They put a LOT into the episode and they also amped up the explosion level to Bay. It felt like it was Trek being directed by Michael Bay in the back half, but that is both understandable and forgivable given that they needed to wow an already highly disgruntled audience.

Still not a real fan of the series, especially given the timeline/prequel problem. However it is VERY nice to have a glimmer of having actual Star Trek back on television which this episode did an outstanding job of.

It remains to be seen if they are going to be able to keep it up and manage the continuity with all its problems.

Key thing to remember is when you look at Trek history, that short of TOS (which was a failure of a show and was cancelled and only gained serious popularity thanks to reruns) that every Trek TV show has had awful initial seasons. TNG especially which is so cringe worthy its practically unwatchable in parts. That said TNG is the closest parellel to Discovery in that its the show that is deviating from the norm and trying to establish itself and in so doing so had massive missteps in its first season. If Discovery can continue along this trajectory, the ship WILL right itself and Discovery will eventually become a respectable to Trek history. You cant listen to vocal fans ranting and raving because this isnt the trek they know because they did the same thing every new show and they were proven wrong each time as the shows found their audiences (Save Enterprise which got cut prematurely just as its audience was starting to form)

Moreover than just being wrong if you cant allow for Trek to be something different, it will never grow, evolve or improve and if you are actually a fan of trek you WANT it to change because who wants to keep watching the same thing over and over and over again? Orville fans, thats who.

Will continue to revise review with new episodes. Right now to be honest I would rate the first episode of Season 2 a 7.8, but elect to rank it a 9 to help counteract the ridiculous Orvillians who do not understand trek and are review bombing it for little or no legitimate reason.

My impression up to this point has been that the writers/producers of STD had little knowledge or appreciation of Star Trek in general. Although the effects throughout have been excellent, prior to this latter half of season 2, the overall story telling has been poor and amateurish. While I am a progressive person and welcome the diversity in STD, the poor quality in storytelling and plot prior to these recent episodes has been unfortunate. Moreover what has come across, is tokenism and a patronizing ham-handed appeal to what are imagined SJW sensibilities. Hopefully these episodes (206/208) are an indication of a very welcome course change. *Get rid off or rework the Tilly character. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review is purely for the sake of combating the absurd amount of toxic masculinity and general hatred (from both genders) present on metacitic.
    1. The show isn’t scientific enough.
Since when has Star Trek been scientific? Can you explain to me how a warp drive works? What about a phaser? Or a plasma relay? No scientist on earth would ever tell you that ships can fire lasers in space, or ‘demolecularise’ people. It’s fantasy people, get over yourselves.
    2. The show is too feminist.
I’m sorry would you prefer it if the males went around groping the women or if females actors were employed purely for their sexual appeal (I’m looking a you jerry, I love your acting but there’s no hiding from that one.) 3. It isn’t true to the original Star Trek canon.
No ####ing s$$t Sherlock. How dumb and boring would that be. I’m not here for a rehash, I’m here for a fresh imagining with new ideas and new concepts. Now that’s what Star Trek is really about.
    4. Burnham is a Mary Sue.
No. Burnham disobeyed her captain committing treason which ended with the deaths of millions. That is a serious character flaw that wouldn’t be anywhere near how a Mary Sue would behave. She spent the entire first season trying to return to prison for God’s sake. She was forced into the position of saviour by everyone else, not because she’s perfect and the only one who can save the universe.

Okay I’m done. Seriously, watch this show it’s amazing.

I thought the second season rebounded from the lengthy attempts at character building and storyline development. This is natural for new shows...the star trek audience is probably a little less patient with that sort of development given the history of the franchise.

I am not a fan of the idea that you have to remain loyal to any franchise. If you can't grow and explore then what's the use. If the same old stuff worked for today's audience it would still be on TV and we wouldn't be talking about a new series but rather a continuation of Star Trek TNG, Voyager, DS9, albeit a prequel and not a sequel given the timeline. I am okay with the show being creative, being bold, and taking the franchise where no fan has gone before (pun intended)!

I enjoyed every single Star Trek series, each movie, and each special on the topic. Star Trek Discovery is no exception. Roddenberry was master at dealing with the issues, challenges, and complex emotional societal quandaries of his time. Star Trek Discovery should be equally bold. I still do think the franchise has done a poor job in managing the look and consistency of the Klingons over the years and through several series. This new Klingon look caught me off guard at first. They need to explain how we get from here to Worf by way of what we saw in the original Kirk series...genetic manipulation, interbreeding, Eugenics, or something else...just help us tie it all together.

Overall, the show is excellent...my only issue is all this talk about characters leaving the show...are you kidding me!!! Just when you got to love the dynamics of Pike and his crew, Philippa Georgiou, Spock, Spock's family, Michael, Stamets, Tilly, Klingon L'Rell, and others there is talk that several folks are not returning. That would be a mistake in my view. The Star Trek community needs both Discovery and the Pike evolution in my view. If that is being explored as a separate series then fine but to just stop it altogether is ridiculous.

Do more time travel, do more cross-over, do more Borg (please), and do less soap opera-like material and explore a world where Star Trek Discovery can be the new science lab for kids learning physics, chemistry, biology, and such. I still recall how the original Spock's analysis of a silicon-based life form (discovered in a cave on some planet) compared to carbon-based life forms, helped me on a chemistry test. You have a whole new generation of kids wanting to learn about computer coding, AI, data science, space travel, aliens on other worlds, etc. Spend time teaching them how you got to "Computer" and the science behind that mastery of integrated technology that Trekkies take for granted as a talking problem solver. Show them how do you create hollow deck technology we saw in TNG, Voyager, and DS9, how you formed the Federation of planets, debate the evidence of the famed The Hatona Council, challenge Sitchen, Erich von Däniken, and others...make Star Trek the experimental imagination on where so many are afraid to go...you can do it...you are off to a great start so far...Don't let biased skeptics stuck in the past slow you down!!!

However what you cannot say is that this show is a 0 or a 1 or anywhere close. It simply isn't. This season takes you on a great journey with a fairly great plot that comes together without needless filler episodes and is conveyed through stunning visuals, themes and admittedly cheesy dialogue which sometimes detracts from its serious moments however there are still many impactful and powerful scenes which a wide array of people will definitely enjoy. The only aspect I found somewhat lacking was a motivated villain. Without getting into spoilers the enemy is simply.. One dimensional and bland. Its been done before and doesn't add anything new to the formula but at the very least it services the plot and makes for some great episodes. Recommended if you liked the first season since in my opinion this season is better overall and doesn't wait to get straight into the mystery and action. The execution of the plot was mind-blowing and while it started out slowly, by episode 4 or 5, it took off in a very unexpected direction that kept me guessing throughout the remainder of the season. The acting was superb, especially from the actors portraying Spock and Pike. Many of these negative reviews seem to attack the show not "feeling" like the other shows in the series. Have you ever thought... perhaps this is a good thing? Yes, a good thing not to be fed the same formula over and over again until it becomes stale and unappealing. While others complain that it does not contain enough "real science," which honestly, come on... Heisenberg compensators, warp drives (perhaps possible with unlimited energy IE: never going to happen and anti-matter/matter annihilation would not begin to supply the energy needed), and phasers are real science? The show is classified as SCI-FI for a reason... it is a work of FICTION. While it does include scientific terminology, the actual devices used are at best totally unrealistic or at worst, a total work of fiction, however, they do use a scientific approach to explaining the operation of these devices (for the most part), which I find in equal quantity in Discovery. Lastly, we get the standard complaints from Trumpers about SJWs and the like... and to that I can just say... Star Trek certainly is not the show for a Trumper. It contains science (evil), no religious dogma (yay), and worst of all for you guys, a futuristic utopian Communist society without money, disease, war, and poverty. In conclusion, the story is fantastic, compelling, captivating , and most importantly entertaining. While it does not follow the "Star Trek Formula" it is able to successfully continue the saga of the story we have all grown to love and cherish over the many decades since it was originally conceived, while I think, staying true to Gene Roddenberry's original vision for the series, going boldly where no man/one has gone before. I'd seen many storylines in everyone. the demographics and storyline are more aboard than the others and it shows a different take on the relationship within the crew, with their evolution with each other. It's fun to see the "Discovery" characters, who improved greatly over the course of Season 1, play in the same space as the classic guys. This is a setup the series has proven it can work with: interpersonal relationships (Spock is Burnham's brother, of course) and a multi-episode adventure. And in the season premiere, The new "Discovery" continues to shine, with a more confident atmosphere and even some humor mixed in.
