The absence of Spartacus himself is not missing from this season although the sex and gore aspects are turned up to 11.

This season is incredible. Blood and Sand and this season are a 10/10. Both season's of Spartacus are incredible and underrated. The writing is just so good. Acting is great too!

The only reason I wouldn’t call it straight up great is because aside from the finale it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the first season. There just isn’t quite as much tension because for many of the characters we don’t get to know or care about them as much, and for the ones we do we kinda already know what happens to them. However it is interesting to see how they got where they were in the first season, and on top of this they provide a genuinely good new story that feels important rather than just an excuse to reuse actors and sets.
