First off, I have to mark this season down by 1 point for making them still in high school when the actors are obviously way too old to pass. The very first season should have been their final year of high school, not the fourth. Next off I have to mark them down 1 point for Lana Lang not only being brought back but being intricately woven into the plot. Bad choice, she's still the weakest actor of the cast. Thirdly I have to mark down 1 point for every ancestor of Lana Lang's to be absolutely identical to her. What? Couldn't find any other actors? Hopefully we'll find out it's because she's a clone of a clone of a clone.

Ok, now onto the good stuff. The series opens brilliantly, packed full of action & mystery. Great, scene set. Michael Rosenbaum was even more awesome at portraying a torn Lex Luthor than previously. In the first three seasons he seems like an honestly good guy with a bad childhood and a highly developed sense of curiosity. In this season he really works the good/bad, could-go-either-way, torn-between-the-two pathway decision without going over the top. Tom Welling plays an excellent Clark Kent, though I think the writers need to lose the sappy stuff a bit. His character can still be moral, down-to-earth and inherently good without being moralistic in a leave-it-to-beaver style sap fest.

It was wonderful to have guest appearances from Margot Kidder, who played Lois Lane in Superman II while also introducing the Lois Lane character played by Erica Durance. Sam Jones III who portrayed Pete Ross was lost this season which was unfortunate. As much as Clark has Lex as a friend, Ross played a role of 'best-buddy' which neither Lex or Chloe could be. So, Chloe stepped up as the best friend, Lana had a new relationship, and Clark is now able to get to know Lois. They have a love/hate thing going straight away with Clark still pining over Lana. Sigh - why cant he just go for Chloe?

The arrival of actual character development has made Smallville's increasingly rote freak-of-the-week stories tolerable.
