If the last series established Calder as the lead character – back story, personality, difficult relationship with her church-minister brother – then this series is more of an equal pairing between Calder and the newly promoted Tosh.

With no Tarantinoesque gangster fly-ins, Shetland seems more promising this time around.

This plot is an odd fish, though, and not just because it used Ian Hart, wearing an unlikely wig, for only about three minutes in episode one. .... Never mind. Calder and Tosh McIntosh (Alison O’Donnell) are gelling well as a duo.
