It seems like they tried to go too big on the shock surprise and do something different. SPOILER: Also, really hated the Moriarty character and casting in this series. The actor and character always came off like a dim-witted but cocky psychopathic yuppie banker bro given a bunch of cheesy one-liners by the writers. The original character was supposed to be a clever, older professor. Filling the finale with him saying a bunch of cheesy lines just made it even worse. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sherlock Season 4 is fun to watch, because it is a good piece of tv. Being good however is not really satisfying for such a great show. While the mysteries the master detective has to solve are again very entertaining, the context around them seems sort of artificial. Especially Sherlock's loss of childhood memories, which is the entry point of the last episode, is hardly believable and leaves you with the sour taste that the writers were forcefully trying to create something new that is huge and meaningful with Moriarty and Mary being dead. In addition to this over the top writing, the constant reversion of truth about things that happened before at some point is just frustrating, as you get the feeling that nothing that is revealed and supposed to give you the effect of pleasant realization, is to be trusted. While the writing is definitely not the strength of this season, the cinematography is still great and so is the outstanding cast. Expand

A bold, season with moments of pure genius. Inconsistency was probably the biggest issue with the 3 episodes, that and the lack of focus on John and Sherlock as the primary lens. The distance between them can surely only work in the short term to fuel our investment in their inevitable reunion. Hopefully future Sherlock seasons will keep John and Sherlock in centerfield.

Rather than give viewers the careful character development that made the first season so masterful, they decided to razzle-dazzle us with cleverness.... except that cleverness should actually be clever. The inconsistencies, improbabilities, plot holes, and neglected resolutions made the whole season painful to watch, particularly the last episode. Eurus, the long-institutionalized Holmes sister, can control people around her simply by being in their presence? How does that work? How does she magically mover herself (and Sherlock and John) from one place to another? The mind-controlled staff of Sherrinford seems to be relatively small.

Is this an episode of Dr. Who? Because it borders on sci fi.

Also, season four proves once again that Moffat and Gatiss have trouble portraying female characters. "Strong" female characters seem to them to be "kickass." Mary a ninja assassin who can leap in front of a bullet once it leaves the muzzle of a gun fired ten feet away? Eurus the deadliest person on the planet? Mrs. Hudson cornering an Aston Martin like Mario Andretti? Give me a break. I can't possibly suspend THAT much disbelief. Someone needs to tell Moffat/Gatiss that "strong" characters are nuanced, believable characters, which is why they're memorable.

One other complaint: this show should NEVER have killed off Moriarty (I think they did this because they wanted to move on to other villains). As portrayed by Andrew Scott, he is the perfect foil for Sherlock, and he should have been used as an occasionally recurring character. It seems that once Moffat/Gatiss belatedly realized how popular Moriarty is, they kept bringing him back, but the posthumous version, a hallucination in Sherlock's "mind palace" isn't HIM; it's a corrupted version that makes a fool of him. What a terrible shame. And baiting the audience that he might be alive, only to yet again confirm he's not, is truly insulting to the viewer.

Season four episode three was presented as a "finale," and that's fine by me. I'm not enough of a masochist to watch a season five. And sadly, I can't even play my DVD of season one anymore... knowing what's coming is just too painful.

    Au revoir, Sherlock.

In the first three seasons, there was character complexity and growth, brilliant cases and you actually cared about the characters. Viewers are not confused because they don't understand what is going on (they get what is happening). They are confused as to why this season doesn't feel right, like it's a different show,..why characters are completely out of character and why a show that was working so well would change so drastically. You know where the killer is so just call Scotland Yard and have her picked up. No need to get a major character killed off. Then all the "it's all your fault so i hate you" bull **** between Holmes and Watson just seemed old and stale. And the "Final Problem" Ep 3 of Season 4 was frankly ridiculous. I didn't like season 3 much, and expect season 4 would make up for it, but it got even worse now, and I don't think the show can recover from this if they are going to make more of it and keep the same stupid plot lines. I’ve watched the first two episodes of the current series of Sherlock and I have to say, I’ve never seen anything so in love with itself as this series. It’s oozing smugness and self-satisfaction. And for a show which celebrates its own cleverness so much, the depiction of the villain in episode 2 as a Jimmy Saville-esque psychopath was crass and ham fisted.

Even with the amazing cinematography and brilliant direction, the creators could not deter the show falling into a disappointing territory. The new season is disjointed, fragmented and convoluted, and often funny but it does not lead to anything, and even the relationship between Sherlock and John Watson lacks any kind of charm and it doesn't deliver on the grounds we all have been waiting for.

What a piece of garbage. This only rug pulled this appalling, misogynistic queer bait of a season managed is to show that the writers had no clue where they were headed this whole time. The amount of inconsistencies is mind blowing. The acting was fantastic but could never redeem this insult to the viewers' intelligence.

Sherlock has been given a big budget and has become a play ground for camera men: one nice shot is not enough we need three and the film becomes the sort of challenge your optician would use to test you. Then comes the fast sequences that were so charming and new in the first seasons... instead of being useful to the plot line they're used to speed off the points we probably would have been happy to be included in the main story or are just used to show off the series' new budget.
My sympathies to the actors who worked hard to forget how ridiculous was the set or their outfits. Both disrespected the wonderful work done in the previous seasons (seriously since when do we go to Mycroft's office or home and why the hell are both underground??) The actors tried to save what they could and probably would have done a better job if the script had allowed them more than 10 sec dialogues full of one line cliches.
You've heard me, Sherlock has become the super budget day-time soap opera. An overbearing juxtaposition between a children's tale, and an aquarium used so cleverly as a "clue" to the end of the episode. Remember the time when we had to watch Sherlock three times to actually find theses clues?

Sherlock season 4 comples a short list of enjoyable moments intwined with exposition followed by more exposition making each sequence feel somwhat contrived and over-eloborate. To even the most casusal fans of the series, audiences cannot lie about the evident drop in quality since the end of season 2 where originality all but dried up and fan service was all but left to fill the void, with Moffat and Gatiss consuming member berry after member berry to relive some of the glory of the first 2 seasons "Ooh, member Irene Adler?" "Ooh i member!".

From even before the show had begun, people were famaliar with Sherlock Holmes, the clever detective in the funny hat, ever accompanied by his loyal physician, Dr John Watson and it was within the first few moments of watching Holmes for the first time that we truely got a measure of how intelligent he was in his ability to accurately observe what others simply see. However in season four any audience members will doubt what Sherlock can actually see as in between season 3 and 4 Sherlock has appartently developed a God complex that not only grants him the ability to solve cases with no other viable evidence then his mind palace but to also read the future.

The main complement however that i can give this season is its behind the scenes production with acting talent and set value being of the gold standard, even if the story and hideous CGI hinder the preformances and scenery that have been so carefully crafted to retain the look from the first series of Sherlock in 2010.

The Lying Detective brings the show back to form again with a strong villain and mystery and awesome performances, direction, editing, and writing. It's easily better than every episode in the first and third series.

The Final Problem is good but does not accomplish much by the time it is over. It does not really live up to the hype and almost every living or abiotic element in the episode feels wasted.

I will definitely say that Season 4 did not live up to the hype,I mean from the trailers and interviews from the cast & producers heck even the tagline "Its not a game anymore" it seemed like this was going to be the best season yet but sadly it was a different case.Firstly of the performance from the cast was great as expected especially Sian Brooke who was a wildcard and a surprised who worked well.Another mention is Toby Jones who was a villain in Episode 2 and was good but not really great, there was mystery around the character and he gave a chilling performance.

Now the episodes, after the season 3 finale you would expect season 4 to be faced paced and intense but its the opposite as its really a filler episode with boring plot lines and really slow expect fro the surprise ending, without too many spoilers it envoles a wrap up on a certain character.Either way it was disapointing.

Episode 2 provided more a faster pace & a more interesting case involving the villain of Toby Jones Character, this episode rather starts off convoluted and messy but picks up in the second act as the episode gets more intense and interesing and ends with a great cliffhanger involves Sian Brooke's character.

Episode 3 is THE episode that sealed it all after 2 dissapointing episodes. It concludes all mysteries from season 1 to 3 and also features a brief but satisfying return for Jim Moriarty. The episode was intense and really mind blowing expect the ending which ended on a whimper & didn't conclude me character acrs.

Overall I think Season 4 could have done better but was saved by the final episode which was just great if its the final season I would hate to see the show end but it really satisfied me.
