I love how the characters develop with there powers, relationships and emotionally. Expand

However, I love all the characters APART from Clary. Could they not find a better actress? Even I think I could do better. I much prefer the Clary from the movie. The Clary in the show is so...bland, boring, annoying, ordinary, and thinks she's better than she actually is. Her facial expressions are also weird and over-exaggerated. There, I said it, Kat can't act. That's just my opinion though. I also prefer the Jace from the movie but the one in the TV show is cool so no complaints there. I love Alec, Izzy, Simon and Magnus especially. Matt, Harry and Emeraude are great actors in particular and play their parts so well.

The show keeps me interested and wanting to find out what happens next. I recommend it.

And I personalty think they did a great job.
On the other hand I understand you didn't like Clary's and Jace's actors (the other are all amazing, especially Alec's and Magnus'), but I assure you get really used and attached to them if you're open-minded enough.

If you love Supernatural then you will most likely love this show. Stick with it until episode 4 at least before passing judgement/reviewing.

You can love the books, the movie & the show - I do. If you don't compare then they are all enjoyable.
The show has Good acting, characters, action & style. Plots could better but still enjoyable most episodes.

Her moaning and pathetic fake crying at every scene are ridiculous. Hysterical when those two attempt to look like they're fighters poised with their glow in the dark plastic swords held high. I couldn't even watch the horror that was Luke trying to act in pain...

Worst writing possible with numerous things that make zero sense and settings that are anywhere but NYC. Atrocious casting to say the least. If you constantly announce how much Clary looks like her mother when they only way they could look less alike is if they were different races; you tell the audience how stupid you think they are over and over and over...

Sadly that's about all there is that I can praise. There's a clear and constant hint of sexualisation as they find any excuse to squeeze Miss McNamara into a tight leather outfit that shows off her body; but I'll admit I did enjoy the eye candy during my soapy teen monster fighting serial. In fact, it's half the reason I'm still watching as she's the only real stand out part of the show.

The show itself lacks the humour that the like of Buffy had, with far more time being spent going on and on about magical mcguffins and the "destiny" of the main character. The show tries to be far more serious in tone than it's pacing or atmosphere can deliver making it come across as "moody teen" the TV show. It's hardly a bad show, but it's one I can only recommend to fans of the genre. If you grew up watching Charmed or Buffy, you'll probably find yourself at home here; but there's far better stuff out there.

While MTV surprisingly made an engaging show with the "Shannara Chronicles," Freeform swung and missed with this series. The pilot was a boring, confusing train wreck.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What can i say? Im completely disappointed. I had hoped that someone could accurately bring the mortal instruments to life on a screen after the train wreck that the movie turned out to be but instead they give us this. They spend to much time trying to appeal to pop culture and attempting to cram all too much plot into each episode rather than focusing on information accuracy and a good quality script. Not only that but the special effects and the demons were rather pathetic, but could be overlooked. The choice of actors could have been much better as well. I've read all the books and it's really a shame because the mortal instruments is a great series and it has a lot of potential as a tv show but not if it keeps getting screwed over.

To be more specific on some earlier points, on the show Valentine looks more like he should be Clary's grandfather rather than her dad and not at all as the book describes him. Another one is that shadowhunters are supposed to be wearing their fighting gear, not fancy business suits. The institute is not supposed to be all modern and high-tech because shadowhunters are very traditional and don't even allow telephones in Idris so the chances that they're using touchscreen computers is extremely unlikely.

I will continue to follow it though in hope that the producers will pull their crap together and turn this into something awesome.

That being said, if I am able to make it through the entire season I will be truly amazed. Each episode of this horrible acting pushes me closer and closer to no longer watching. There's a reason that the main actress, Katherine McNamara, has no big accomplishments to her name. No big movies, no long lasting TV Shows. I don't see that changing in her future unless she gets some major help with her acting skills, or lack thereof. Expand

I really do think, despite all the negative comments, that you must give this show a chance. The biggest problem people had with this show was the changes, I guess. Like the fact that they took a plot from the second book and mixed it with the first book. Fans of the book said that they were not going to continue watching, some of the reveals which were made early on and that the pace was not the same. However, since the author of the books, Cassandra Clare, has approved this show, its pace, actors and its context (which is slightly different from the books) I don't think the changes that were made are that much of a problem. Special effects and the monsters are not as realistic as you would expect, but that's just because of the budget. If, and I hope, the show gets a renewal for a second season, I'm positive they will improve the effects and the cringeworthy cheesy lines.
While, Simon, Alec, Magnus and İsabelle are portrayed with perfection, I had a slight discomfort with Clary and Jace, I felt like their connection was sort of forced at the beginning. But like I said, with each episode, they get more in character.

I'm beyond shocked by the negative feedback this show gets and I truly believe that, with every episode, the characters fit more, and the story unfolds nicely. The show just improves. It's just a good show. Don't judge beforehand and watch it, please.

The storyline is good but the actors who play Clary and Jace should take acting classes, they do not show emotions and Jace's hair cut is ridiculous. They don't even seem to like each other, so this could never be a credible romantic pair.

Moreover, the highlight of the season comes from Harry Shum Jr's and Matthew Daddario's portrayals of Magnus and Alec respectively, whose budding relationship is perhaps the most compelling aspect of the series. They play their parts beautifully and it builds up to the climax of episode 12 entitled Malec (their names combined). If you are a reader who gets heated when a show or movie differ from the novels, I would suggest coming back to this show at a later time, if at all.
This being said, the acting wasn't all that awful. Really, the actors in this show were small time actors, or simply in commercials or music videos. The FreeForm/ABC Family hit Pretty Little Liars was god awful in the beginning (acting wise, nor did they follow the plot of the book), but the show went on to be very interesting and the networks prime feature. I see much potential in this show becoming a hit, but it's not quite there yet.
It definitely was a step up from the movie though, but no where near the books. The books will be nearly impossible to live up to, but if this show is done correctly, I don't see how it won't be, at the very least, a good show. I do recommend it, but I also must warn you, it is a show that takes ASPECTS of the novel and make it their own. It's in no sense bad, but it's not like the novels. I enjoyed the show, and will be keeping up with it.

    There is a bigger story to tell here, this is for sure, and the story is definitely attention worthy, it simply needs to take a more credible route rather than this thing that I'm trying to watch.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is a reason why they note shows as being based on novels though in this case they should follow that up with loosely. To note some points in particular that are frustrating;

    - the connections between characters appear forced, affections for one another are not subtle and the chemistry that builds between characters is skipped,
    - stand offish scenes remind you you’re watching a show and bring you out of their world,
    - the fact Clary must have been dipped in a vat of nuclear waste to have that shade of orange for her hair,
    - there is a background to the plot we see developing yet at present it seems more attention is dedicated to the skimpy outfits of the girls and overly dramatic vampire teeth,
    - despite being a world with rich history everything seems to happen in some modern industrial setting with lots of piping.

Some of the characters are played by actors that do justice to their roles such as Simon. The nature of the character comes through from the book and as he annoys me as much in the show as he does in the book for the same reasons which is ironically a good thing. Here’s hoping the others grow into their roles and fast.

Episode 4 (latest) felt like it could have been more pivotal to the development of the narrative. Instead we basically learned that someone is making a transformation from lonely boy to demonic lonely boy, someone is denying their true colours and someone gets a pretty necklace. The episode felt short due to this.

    What we would like to see;
    - Clary be a strong female lead,
    - less pretty more gritty (Lets show this urban metropolis and demonic world for what it really is)
    - characters develop their relationships and chemistry in real time (stop fast tracking the love!)
    - a better understanding of the world of Shadowhunters,
    - less demonic raves,
    - more flow & less stop and stare,
    - more integration of the original plot line and sequence of events

Its lacking yet still intriguing. Fingers crossed it improves from here and loses its cliché soap opera vibe.

It does have potential though if the show would draw a bit more from its source material (key events, key characters, dialogue, the whole fact that Shadowhunters don't understand modern technology which sets up so many opportunities for humor) and figure out the direction it wants to go. It also needs to be take itself more seriously; it isn't a kid's cartoon.

Bring back the humour-- bring back the light and witty banter. You can still install the serious undertone of what's been happening but don't completely disregard the original book. I have nothing against how you've progressed 'Malec' rapidly because it draws in viewers and appeal to the kind of audience you're reaching out to. Small parts of script, such as Simon being turned into a rat, would've been a great addition to the 'humorous' aspect of the show.

As much as I love the series and as much as I can see it's potential, the only characters that seem to fit their original profiles-- are Magnus and probably Simon. This is kind of disappointing.

However, that being said, I want to give the show a chance to pick it up a notch and see if they can use feedback from fans and critics to further engage their audience. REMEMBER; the movie wasn't much of a hit either. This TV series has the potential to blow that **** out of the water.

seriously? this serial has nothing to do with the mortal instrument book. The film was better not only in casting actors but also in action. The serial does not go by the book at all, but it's up to it's own story. Cast of the actors is pitiful - Jace (Sherwood) is not Jace as in the book. Alec (Daddario)? This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had great expectations from the show but I am really disasappointed watching it. I always anticipated what will coming (actions and dialogues) and I'm almost always right. There's no element of surprise. And I just can't stand the character or maybe the actress who plays the character of Clary Fray. She's not authentic at all. The first episodes, if the Lord didn't have mercy, I would not probably watch the following ones ! It was so cliche, nothing really special ! But it' has improved a little bit ! PS: Sorry for my English ! Expand

This is one of my favorite supernatural tv shows of all time. The visuals are spectacular. The cast gives fantastic performances especially Katherine McNamara, Matthew Daddario, Dominic Sherwood, Harry Shum Jr., Emeraude Toubia, Isaiah Mustafa, and David Castro.

Yes, the first season is rough. The same is true of many shows; it takes a while for the writing and acting to settle in, and the budget was sparse leading to some bad effects. However, do yourself a favor and power through it. You won't regret it.

This is an IMPORTANT show. It has a sexually and racially diverse cast (and writers room) with appeal to a broad audience who are drawn to it for diverse representation. One of the most prominent romantic pairings is a same-sex couple in a healthy, stable, interracial relationship that avoids harmful tropes and stereotypes.

One of the primary metaphors the story is built around is racism and white supremacy (not surprising, the original novels started out as Harry Potter fanfic, which is another franchise build around a fascist would-be uprising); the title characters, the "Shadowhunters" are mostly a new generation trying to dismantle the oppressive structures of the paternalistic, authoritarian institution they were born into. The chief villain is a would-be fascist dictator trying to overthrow their government and commit genocide against the non-Shadowhunter supernatural races.

In light of the current events along the US border, events which are being driven by racism and white supremacy and which hearken back to genocidal ideologies of the past, these are important, topical issues. The world NEEDS a show like this.

It's a start, a rough one perhaps but it's still the beginning of something that would later become beautiful (not that it was ugly before, just not as beautiful). I'm still giving it a 10 anyways because that's what I'd give season 3, but there is no season 3 without season 1, right? Expand

But ignore the books because the show is an original adaptation -not exactly an adaptation- and they follow the main storyline but also have a personal storyline. The show also treat better all the characters because in the books you only see Clary and Jace, the show has lots of Magnus, Alec, Luke, Maryse, Maia, Simon, etc. It's one of the best representation for LGBT couple, mental health, POC and all.

The concept is awesome. Its unique, I like that these angel type beings are edgy and kind of emotionally detached. Even their look is neat, with their tattoos and leather. They're not all feathers and light or anything. The overall aesthetic is very pleasing. The movie had some corny bits but I enjoyed it and had hoped for a sequel. I appreciate that the show came to fruition.

Although, I must say, I absolutely despise this Clary girl. Everything from her voice and appearance to her weak, needy behavior. Its such a shame. I know shes confused and going through oh, so much but- unfortunately I hate the girl and cannot connect with her or feel any sympathy for her. I literally made this account to express my disdain for Clary.
The show and movie for that record, are totally tweeny and inane but admittedly, to an extent, its part of the draw for me. Its good to unwind with after a long day.
On a positive note, I'll reiterate that I appreciate that the show came to be and I do enjoy Isabelle and her antics. Magnus is of course, fabulous.

Still ok so far but felt that Katherine is not suitable for this lead role. Nothing against her but I only saw a barbie doll , not a shadow hunter. Her whole vibe is wrong. It felt forceful, trying too hard to play her character. Better to be a disney princess or in a barbie movie lol. Absolutely not cut for this one

Despite what other reviews suggest, Shadowhunters is not your run-of-the-mill, pre-teen/teen sci-fi show. Yes, the show has its fun, quirky, and somewhat cheesy moments, particularly in Season 1, but it has matured a lot since then and taken on a much darker and more serious tone. Although the characters are part of a fantastical world, their personalities and life experiences are deeply embedded in reality. This leads to prominent story lines about topics that are often thrown to the wayside in sci-fi/fantasy shows (i.e., sexuality, mental health, addiction, racism, homophobia, etc.) and sparks conversations that allow for learning experiences, both for the characters and the audience.

This show has also become extremely well-known for its positive representation. It features diversity, but not in cliches or token characters. 5 of 8 of the main characters, as well as many recurring characters, are played by People of Color and many of them hold leadership positions. Several well-developed characters identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, including one of only two asexual characters currently on TV. One of the main (and most popular) romantic relationships in the show is between a recently-out gay man and a bisexual man and it has been allowed to develop onscreen, front and center, in many respects. Religious minorities are also featured in prominent roles, as well as strong, capable women who empower each other. This representation not only makes a difference in the lives of those who watch Shadowhunters; it has provided the show with a platform to break overused and harmful stereotypes - a platform that the show has overwhelmingly used beautifully to do exactly that.

Because of all of this, Shadowhunters has broken the mold of your typical genre show and paved the way for other shows to follow in its footsteps. The cultural importance of Shadowhunters cannot be overstated. There's a reason that it won 4 People's Choice Awards in 2018, including Show of the Year. It's definitely worth a watch!

The pilot is so bloated, attempting as it does to relay all the rules of its fictional universe through nauseatingly clunky dialogue and disorienting time- and location-jumps (including some to freaking Chernobyl, where the series’ big bad has randomly chosen to camp out), that it’s difficult to make sense of anything going on, but here are the basics.

McNamara does her best, but Clary has been written as all breeze and no storm, which makes her central relationship with Jace more an algorithm of attractiveness than chemistry. Decter appears far more interested in Revelations than revelation, and in his rush to get to the "good stuff" he has forgotten that this kind of stuff is good only when it takes a while to get there.

Not even the directorial efforts of McG can salvage what’s happening here. There are some mild action sequences, but they don’t do much to elevate the proceedings.
