Season 2 was vastly superior to Season 1 due to superb, nuanced, nonverbal acting; adorable cast; beautiful costumes, parties and dancing worthy of a Regency period drama. Season 2 (only 6 episodes versus 8 episodes in Season 1) is just a stepping stone to the ending in next year's Season 3. Because of the longer plot development, some found Season 2 "boring" or "wearying"; however, I did not. If you are looking for non-Bridgerton drama, you won't be disappointed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Given the long gap between Season 1 and 2 and the key actors that were unable to return (necessitating the tragic death of the romantic hero Sidney and the loss of the lovely Stringer and Babington), it was inevitable that the new series would be quite different. Unfortunately, instead of being more Austen-like, it veered into soapy melodrama even more than Season 1, to the point of ridiculousness at times. It was more like a pastiche of Austen with borrowed bits from numerous other books and films. There were some excellent performances and the sets were better (although the CGI is still dodgy), but the multiple plots and characters all jostled for attention, to the detriment of the central love story, which lacked the magic and sparkle of Season 1 and yet again ended with an implausible cliffhanger. I enjoyed catching up with some of the old characters, but I missed the muted colours, historical realism and sexiness of the first season. Expand

As if to compensate for the uninspired plotting, the cast overacts shamelessly, turning this homage into a handsome but wearying period cartoon. [28 Mar - 10 Apr 2022, p.7]

It’s not worth investing in a BritBox subscription for, but there are worse things to spend an hour on.

This second run duly took a while to get going, but when it stopped apologising for what it was not – neither Austen redux nor a postmodern costumer – Sanditon found its voice and occasionally took wing.
