Samurai Champloo is a irreverent and entertaining anime series. The story is set in Japan's Edo period, but that doesn't stop the writers from bringing in plenty of contemporary references. There are three main characters: Foo, a young girl in search of the "samurai who smells of sunflowers"; Mugen, a roguish wanderer; and Jin, a ronin. The story follows their journey on Foo's search.

The series starts out relying on comedic situations, almost slap-stick at times, as the three travelers are thrown together and make their way through various obstacles. There's some fun sword fights as well, but this isn't a series built around fighting scenes. Later on, character development takes a more prominent role, to the point where some of the later episodes aren't funny but rather thought-provoking and sometimes sad. The humor always remains, though, and is the best part of the series.

The reason this review is rated a 7 instead of 8 or 9 is that three of the last five episodes are very weak. I don't want to post spoilers, so suffice it to say that two of these seemed completely disconnected from the story and way over the top in terms of being unrealistic, and the fate of the main characters in the finale seemed unbelievably convenient.

Overall, an excellent series, well worth the time to watch. Highly recommended to anyone that enjoys a little comedy with their samurai.

Prior to viewing this and Cowboy Bebop, I had little regards for anime. Although the plot's progression is subtle and fight scenes are few in each episode, compelling characters and satisfying endings make this a truly unique show. Thanks to thrilling action scenes and a diverse range of characters throughout both series, I now enjoy this genre as much as live action.

I don't think hat I've ever been so surprised by something as this. I was given the DVD set as a gift, and I casually put it one one night, thinking that it would be something to pass the time, but I just couldn't stop watching it. I have never been so disappointed to finish a DVD with the understanding that there's no more to follow! Slapstick comedy, finely crafted fighting scenes, great dialogue (English subs), and a killer soundtrack. Not everyone will love this, but I did. Expand

One of the best T.V. show's i have ever seen. It captivated me from the very first episode i saw. This is a show that would be for those who are not, or are into anime. Thanks to all that made this show possible.

Damn good animation, music, and use of the music to set the scenes of the show. The story line is a bit unbelievable, but it's forgiven to an extent given that it's a cartoon. The story doesn't completely flow though, and the ending seems a tad abrupt. Overall a damn good Western style samurai anime.

This show was devised as transferring Cowboy Bebop into the Samurai Edo period. It has the same strengths with well written characters with depth and incredible backstories, a worldbuilding you always believe and stories that are engaging. Unlike Cowboy Bebop it is not that well remembered while being definitely a really great show. If you like either one you will like the other without a doubt.
