This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Truly a corny show. Most of what’s intended to land doesn’t land. Credit some of this horrible show to the writers, producers, directors ... they must not know what’s entertaining. All of it’s like a bad version of some Tarantino film or Sin City, both of which are very entertaining, artistic, and nail new school takes on noir. With Hulu having the amazing sense to put forth and support Ramy and Pen15, they laid one of the worst duds I’ve seen in a while. For example, Happy! also does a lot of comic booky violence in a kinda made up world, but we care about the characters more in that one. Reprisal has been compared to Banshee. I see the throwback, violent, over the top comparisons in some cases. But Reprisal consistently has characters do things that don’t make sense, like the main mole not just running away. The lead’s vernacular believability is like Vince Vaughn’s in True Detective 2. Sometimes interesting, usually fake as heck. The worst part is it’s such a wasted opportunity. You can tell tons of money was poured into this steaming pile. And some of the actors would’ve handled better material. Some people were poorly cast, but some were cast well. Expand

I had this on for background noise and ended up binge-ing the first season over the weekend. While the main character's development is interesting and gripping, there are a few supporting roles that lack the same depth. The gang that was focused on through the season had many promising characters that were simply glossed over or never developed past their initial introduction. Unfortunately the season as a whole suffered from a broken narrative, and several sloppy cliches (the biggest of which being the overused "girl power" theme - I don't mind it here and there but it's entirely overdone these days) and the gangs as a whole lack depth. Some truly killer performances from both the female leads, and a few of the supporting actresses. Matty and Ethan are also rewarding characters, so the show does have a few good-great efforts through the first season. Overall, a lot to be improved upon. Pacing and characterization being the two most critical points of failure for me. Despite that, very enjoyable and worth a watch. It's nice to see Hulu gradually increasing the quality of their exclusive content. 7/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well done series about vengeance, family and violence. Low key tone reminds me of Coen brothers production (Fargo type). Drinking, smoking, cursing and killing abound, although the violence is subdued by only showing blood splatters, rather than flying flesh and body parts. Much of the real violence is intimated rather than actually shown.
Each of the first nine episodes kept me guessing as to what was going on, or what had happened. But each offered a new clue, until the final episode put it all together. Unfortunately, the final episode was not that gratifying, as it appeared to be setting up the basis for future series. Many characters I thought would be dead, remained alive after the final episode....sadly. Yes, I will be watching when the next series comes out.
