    Red Dwarf has been deteriorating in quality since the introduction of Kryten as part of the main cast at the beginning of season three. Now, there is a reason Seasons 7 and 8 have been completely disowned by fans: they're terrible. Maybe not terrible in the traditional sense of bad acting. because all of the acting is relatively good. No, the deterioration of the series comes down to the bad writing, with Rob Grant departing from the show and leaving Doug Naylor to work on it. It seems all of the good and original ideas came from Grant after this split. The premise of the series is this: Lister is the last survivor of the human race, on a ship with a creature that evolved from Lister's Cat three million years before, Kryten, a series-4000 mechanoid, and Kochanski, Lister's love interest who comes from a parallel dimension where SHE is the last human survivor. The dwarfers have Red Dwarf recreated for them after Lister "misplaces" it, and, upon arriving, discover that the robotic grey goo that rebuilt the ship also resurrected the dead crew, completely defeating the purpose of the show to begin with, to showcase the effects of Lister alone in deep space, the last of his race. This season brings back Rimmer, who is alive now, as he departed in the previous series in a horribly missaimed attempt to bring a bit of humor to the show by sending him off as the "new" Ace Rimmer in another dimension. This time, Rimmer has been resurrected along with the crew. He, Lister, Cat, Kryten and Kochanski end up imprisoned in a previously and conveniently unknown-until-this-point prisoner deck on what was once a mining ship. Naylor seems to have retconned so many elements to make his story fit that it no longer makes any sense at all. This season is by far the worst in the entire series, with no humorous moments to speak of apart from the odd giggle, no memorable episodes and no redeeming qualities whatsoever, apart from the acting, as Naylor has butchered the show's writing with his newfound creative freedom.… Full Review »
