Race isn’t just an engrossing and surprisingly suspenseful docuseries about an elite athlete trying to get to the top tier of his sport. It’s also a great intro to racing and NASCAR, including a clear-eyed look at its rebel-flag-waving past.

Most moving is the personal time spent with Wallace himself. He opens up about the pressure to win as NASCAR’s only Black driver, and the stress and newfound fame he feels from being a part of racing’s social justice movement.

It’s a series that undeniably drifts into hagiography and has a frustrating habit of raising interesting topics only to push the gas medal and move on. However, it gave me a greater respect for Wallace as a person and as a driver, presenting the difficulties of his sport in a way I haven’t really seen before.
