It's early on a Friday night and you're alone at a cocktail party outside of Boston. After your second Gin and Tonic you bump into a friend from high school who is up from DC and visiting his sister for the weekend so you have your third G & T and join a group of his people that look pretty chill in their relaxed Gap clothing and distressed 501s and cute-rimmed glasses. After your second Gin and Tonic you bump into a friend from high school who is up from DC and visiting his sister for the weekend so you have your third G & T and join a group of his people that look pretty chill in their relaxed Gap clothing and distressed 501s and cute-rimmed glasses. They start to talk politics, about "the party", about "the future", and the ideals that they will be carving out for "you", for "everyone". They drink craft beer and check their phones. They eat puff pasty and play with their Porsche cayenne key. They ask the host to put on some Bob Dylan because his music is so "right for right now". Time passes and your friend, the one from high school, the one with the sister, looks around as he straightens his invisaline and actually cares for one-billionth of a second to think where you might be and that's so nice and swell but you've already had five drinks at the dive bar around the corner with some much better people. 1. I do wish these specials had been an opportunity for the Pod Save crew to push the format to different places, or to experiment with something other than a lengthy group chat as the opening scene. ... It’s hard for these Pod Save specials to breathe through the noise of a deafening media cycle of election season when the thing that feels most striking about them is that they’re a known quantity, especially for the news-junkie crowd.

The hosts' onstage banter was generally more entertaining than the pre-planned segments, which included a mock instructional video about election canvassing, a profile of young political activists in Florida and a game show parody called Disenfranchised or Deplorable? A notable exception was the interview with a pastor leading the fight to restore voting rights to Florida felons. It was both effective and important because the issue could well determine which way the state leans in future elections.
