Honestly this special really didn’t do it for me. I do think Pete Davidson is talented and has a unique perspective but he is mostly tolerable in 5 minute increments vs a whole show.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pete Davidson is a funny stand-up, and his recent Hot Ones was a good example of how funny he can be. Unfortunately, this stand-up special is not great. Starts off strong, but quickly devolves into him walking back apologies he rightly gave, including to the Navy SEAL on SNL. The joke he made then was pretty funny, as Crenshaw himself remarked, but his flippant brushing off of a combat injury was not. I really though he showed a lot of class apologizing, and giving Crenshaw an opportunity to show what a good sport he is, but now he claims, in hisnstand-up no less, that the one good thing that came out of the whole situation was **** Much like the rest of his act, it lacks humor and decency. Alive From New York runs just under 50 minutes, and would have a chance at being decent if the New York comedian decided to cut it down to a solid half hour. Instead, he waffles on in a meandering way, never quite hitting his stride and certainly benefiting from a generous editor.

This performance is so raw, director Jason Orley leaves in not just the parts Davidson says he’d cut from the special, but also the aside the comic makes to him from onstage about a joke he wants left in, too.

Alive From New York runs only 49 minutes, but it still feels both as thin and padded as the marginally spiffed-up Davidson in his T-shirt, suit jacket, too-short dress pants, and sneakers.
