Great character development but its balance regarding action and badass gangster situations was lost. Too much politics and modern society winks. I would have needed more of those Peaky from the "No fighting scene" or the "Don't f**k with the Peaky Blinders" moments. Worse season overall for me.

Whenever things get too crazy the boys return to Small Heath, where they know the lay of the land and consider themselves invincible. This was the theme in Season 4 and again in Season 5. It also tells me that the writers don't really know how to expand the theme of the series without it getting completely out of hand.

They've already taken great liberty with the Peaky Blinders, but it works within the claustrophobic atmosphere of Birmingham. It doesn't when they start reaching out to London and New York and Shanghai. Thomas may be a smart lad, but he isn't that smart. It takes more than street smarts to run a global empire of alcohol and drugs, and most likely the Blinders would be a small part of a much larger syndicate. After all, how far will 200 barrels of gin per day go? At least, the idea of smuggling opium in the coal is more lucrative, but I don't think the US was importing coal during this time. They had and still have plenty.

Anyway, we are not supposed to take this show too literally. It is largely theatrical, set to one of the most compelling musical scores on television, underpinned by Nick Cave's glorious Red Right Hand, which has been covered so many times now by other artists that I've lost count. Arthur is as compelling as ever even if his actions make no sense. Thomas remains the smoldering lump of coal in the fire. It is hard to figure out what the story is with Michael but you know his new American girl is up to no good. It is so obvious that you can only assume Thomas is letting it play out just for the fun of it.

Finn has come into his own, replacing John, who we lost last season. Unfortunately, he is nowhere near as compelling as his older brother, making me miss John all the more. Grace now haunts Thomas. A nice way to bring back Annabelle Wallis. I assume there will be more ghosts as this series continues.

All in all, it is still fun to watch, but there is only so far you can take this theme. It was better when the boys stuck to Small Heath. Let your rivals come to you, not the other way around.

One of the best television series today and sadly one of the most underrated and ignored. But I like it a lot and I enjoyed this season as I enjoyed the previous ones.

It started a little slow but it quickly composed and closed quite well even though I hate the cliffhanger.

It seems like most people found this season to be the weakest of Peaky Blinders' run, but I think it's the best since the first season. I do think that this is primarily because I found seasons two-through-four to be barely above average, and the change in pace and focus in season five drew me in and kept me interested. I hope that they can keep the ball rolling for season six (which,It seems like most people found this season to be the weakest of Peaky Blinders' run, but I think it's the best since the first season. Oswald is a fantastic villain. Tommy is no longer invincible and his actions have consequences, and blood is rising between the Shelbys. Very intense, very different from the past 2 seasons and I love where it’s heading Expand

The plot develops interestingly, and quickly and aggressively, just not brought to a logical conclusion. Suffice it to say that Winston Churchill and Oswald Mosley - the main fascist of Great Britain - appear here for the first time. In addition, since the fifth season street crime, illegal business and big politics of the Shelby family blend together, and it's very curious to watch.

By focusing on Tommy's deteriorating mental state, the cost of continued violence, and the interpersonal relationships of the Shelby family and how everything they touch eventually turns to ash rather than simply relying on yet more forgettable villains for conflict, Peaky Blinders is a better, more complete family saga than it has been in recent years.
