I'd say it is watchable, but only barely. Performance from Garner (Ruth) is highly commendable, but also performances from almost all other actors are quite good, considering the very weak writing. Basically the actors are holding the series standing, at least in my view. The series pilot is amazing, but then the plot quickly mires down.

Overall, although the show tries to sell itself as realistic, it is not at all. 1. Characters undergo HUGE transformations in no time and without consequences. 2. Some characters rise from "zero-to-hero" in a matter of 1-2 episodes and their status among the other characters is automatically set to the "hero" level. 3. The writing is very weak, filled with plotholes, unintuitive & unexplained behaviour.

4. Sometimes, character lines are citing facts that are directly contradicting facts presented to the viewer 2 scenes before, and the discrepancy is NEVER resolved.

5. The direction with the faint blue filter becomes very, very tiresome; the viewer cannot distinguish between times of day, which may be intended, but annoying nonetheless.

6. Towards the middle of the 2nd season and onwards women take a clear lead in the series, but not in a negative, feministic/SJW way. However from towards the end of the 2nd season, one of the leading female protagonists is increasingly boosted by the writers. She has traumatic experiences that scar people for life, yet she suffers no side effects. Her decision making and hunch are almost infallible. Mary Sue-like.

TL;DR
This is not Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul. Not by a long shot. Not even by approximation. Watch it as a standalone series and keep your expectations very low.

Great actors, especially Bateman, Linney and Garner. So score is based on what else is out there, compared to movies and so on from 30 years ago it would be like a 1. But it's Netflix, a far left propaganda outlet with a mission to break down everything good about western culture, like e.g. family. It's full of misrepresentations of the real world like basically all women are strong and men are weak and stupid. Just as we are used to from the last 40 years of Hollywood regressive propaganda. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honeslty when it comes to this series after watching 3 seasons, it felt unworthy the time spent on it! To be fair only two characters where worthy watching "Ruth Langmore" and "Ben Davis". these two actors gave some meening for this series. There is no action in it, the drama is so fake and the tempo is so slow, there is no emotional incentive in this story. The only person who moved me is Tom Perfrey and Julia Garner. else, I was expecting better from this series. Expand

THE SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO BREAKING BAD? (..but with one key issue)

Not really a big fan of copycat TV..but they do a good job..and am I right? This show doesn't exist if it weren't for BB making the blueprint mainstream. Just finished season 3 and WOW!..can't wait for next season (*sigh*..in another year)

Not gonna punkya with any spoilers..but do have 1 lil whinyB that I think separates OZARK from BB and I think it's pretty key.

First lemme say I DO love this show despite "only" giving it a 7 only cuz it truly does require someone to suspend disbelief to such an extent that ALL these dark forces surround the Byrde Family..yet somehow THEY manage to remain unscathed..Yeah OK..I get it..IT'S A TV SHOW AND IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE REAL..I KNOW!!!..but that's also supposed to be the hook. A seemingly normal middle class family finds themselves thrust into chaos..but yet still seems to retain their "Beaver Cleaver" suburban normalcy. The average dull middle class family is supposed to be able to relate and fantasize that THIS could be THEM!

Props this season to THE ACTING: never really been a big "acting" guy..but this season especially has been standout. Last year it was Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner?) actress..(season 2) scene where she is crying/apologizing to her Dad in the car is frickin Oscar worthy IMO.

This year Ben -Wendy's brother- was AMAZING how he was able to dig deep and go into the emotional pit of despair (I don't EVER!!! want my emotions so close to the surface that I can tap into them like that)..I see big things for this dude ahead
..and even Wendy (Laura Linney) showed me some acting KungFu I did not know she possessed.

Jason Bateman? does he get "acting" credit or not?..cuz his main groove is staying stonefaced and stoic NO MATTER WHAT IS HAPPENING!..but yeah..I love the dude

OK so if there is a whiney li'l complaint about this WHOLE concept..and what makes Marty Byrde different from Walter White..it's that Marty (and Wendy) actually sat down and CHOSE this life. There was no gun to their head.

Walter White was a 50 yr old milquetoast high school teacher with a special needs teen son..a dependant wife with an unplanned newborn on the way..mountains of debt who suddenly learns one day that he has cancer and only 6 months to live. I CAN EMPATHIZE WITH WALTER WHITE! HE'S TRYING TO SCRAMBLE TO LEAVE HIS FAMILY WITH SOMETHING BEFORE HE DIES! He has 6mos to do so and obviously nothing legal is going to do that for him (he even allows himself to rationalize that anyone who buys his product is doing so freely and willingly). It's only once he's in ThaGame does he, HIMSELF, become HOOKED become on the excitement, money, respect & power his new profession gives him.

..but Marty & Wendy?
..no crisis..no cancer..no "gun to the head"
..they could have said No to Cartel Life (in the beginning) and gone on with their middle class lives

..and to me this makes all the difference
..much like Tony Soprano, since Marty & Wendy are the focal points of the show we root for them..We want them to succeed

..but should we?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show started off really good but I began to hate certain aspects of the show, with every new episode. There are just too many unrealistic scenarios and they get worse by the episode. Yes, I understand it's fictional, but c'mon. I can't fall in love with Marty Byrd's character, too wussy like. Doesn't really have a backbone or supports his wife in the arrangement they have with the cartel. She's basically uprooted with her kids to a different place, and though she's in on it to a certain extent, she realizes she has to play the game and she's all in on it and he starts to punish her for it. But for me the writing kills me. The scenarios and how they play out it just would never happen, and I found myself saying this too many times. The Snells would long be dead in a real scenario. The brother would never be released or locked up locally after so many criminal offenses. Many things seemed forced.I'm not saying its the most terrible thing I've seen, but I can't saw it's really good. I just don;t want to reveal too much but just too many writing hiccups that just kill the mood. Expand

Season 3 on the other hand is a tedious 'Breaking Bad' knockoff that has characters that just won't shut up no matter how much you want them to stop talking and on top of that they either killed off or wrote out every interesting character from the 1st two seasons. This series is a way for the producers to wave the flag for 'cool, sexy, criminals' and the absurdity of woke misandry taking over the drug trade! Burn in hell producers, burn in hell, you are safe in your gated communities and mansions, whilst drug addicts go on crime sprees (in poor areas) and die in the streets. You evil bastards. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Up until halfway through season 3, the series is very very good. I think it all goes downhill when they kill off Ben. And it only gets worse from there. The final episode, where all the bad guys win, is **** terrible and lazy writing. Killing off Ruth was an awful narrative choice, and Jonah killing Mel makes no sense at all. I don't think the ending makes any sense. I think it was lazy and ruthless character assassination. Some plotlines were also explicitly abandoned for no reason, like when Ruth confesses to the sheriff that she killed Javi. The ending of season 4 ruined this show like season 2 of Goliath. The writers went too far in letting the bad guys win. While bad people do win in real life, I didn't sink 30+ hours into Ruth Langmore's story just to see her unceremoniously murdered by a character nobody cares about and who has no ark whatsoever. I am so glad Jason Bateman was able to produce this unconventional magnum opus. This series stands apart from other family crime dramas, mainly because it is not about a crime family. The short documentary about the show talks about the struggle between the Byrdes and the Langmores. From that perspective the arc of the show is disappointing and does not bode well for the socio-economic underdogs. It is arguable if their failure is due to their own worst instincts, or unfair social forces. The Byrdes show a remarkable tenacity and willingness to survive at all costs, and their evolution from terrified victims to cool and calculated manipulators is a sight to behold. Every single character in this show is absolutely memorable and authentic, everyone is flawed and has a cloudy moral compass. IMHO the show did come to a logical conclusion, Ozark is astounding. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a brilliant TV series with a great ending. I understand why many people don't like it because they were expecting the normal Hollywood good guys win and bad guys get punished scenario, but Ozarks is ultimately a show that reflects the dark side of real life. It's a show about power and money and how it corrupts everything. The fact that Jonah was the one who supposedly pulled the trigger just illustrates this concept perfectly. Those in power will sacrifice others to fulfill their own ends, it's how they stay in power and accumulate more. Expand

It’s three in one – emotional, entertaining, and insightful!

Tbh, I just found this TV Series – in early 2022 - because it’s really hyped in the world for new coming episodes. I didn’t expect it is gonna make me stunned since I’ve finished my first episode. Since then, I’ve been binge-watching so emotionally and entertained through an unexpected great storyline. Simplicity in the main plot – money laundering in Ozarks – seems perfect through developing the storyline and characters. The whole storyline only focuses on that main plot but is spiced with developing characters and insightful information about money laundering practice and dramatic life. Almost every episode for every season seems plausible and insightful to believe if it could really happen in the real world.

The pros are a great storyline and chars, an amazing director and actor's performance, delightful visuals, and an informative story. Developing storyline and chars well-narrated through problematic work-life in Chicago, unworkable and unhappy marriage, troublesome kids, and financial shortcut through devilish opportunities as drug cartel’s money launderer. Basically, the formula is only focusing on resourceful money laundering practices to make it informative but also delivers problematic psychological issues to make it plausible and relatable to the audience. The amazingness of directors and actors are nominated for tons of Emmy Awards with Bateman winning for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series in 2019 and Garner winning for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2019 and 2020. Besides that, this series is well-known for iconic visuals through distinctive color grading – ex: heavy blue hues, dim lighting, and deep shadows – to make this series more emotional and entertaining. This series is also pretty accurate for money laundering practices caused the production involved real FBI agents in financial crimes. On the other hand, the cons are the series is not suitable for all the audiences because it could be considered a hardcore genre. Another con is degrading quality throughout time which maybe one of the reasons why this series would be ended at this year.

Overall, this series is really amazing. I’ve never thought that we could consume TV Series emotionally entertained and learn a lot of knowledge. I can’t wait for this series to end magnificently!

It's an incredible show that in my opinion is on par with Breaking Bad, at least up until the last season. Ozark has mastered the feel of tension. Every moment felt like an imminent implosion was about to happen, and I was on the edge the whole time. The acting was phenomenal. Every single character felt real, and it really brought the show together. The only possible negative of Ozark, is the ending and the second half of the last season. I understand why the writers chose to end the way they did, but its still just felt a little off. It almost feels like show went out with a whimper just a bit. However, that did not ruin what was otherwise and amazing show, and I still give it a 10 out of 10. Expand
