Mar 27, 2020This show highlights its new technology to an insane degree that shows the power of discovery and finds new ways to explore nature and make the earth feel like it has yet to be conquered.
-
“Night on Earth” has an invaluable asset in Samira Wiley, who provides a kind of liquid narration and is a refreshing alternative to Peter Coyote, David Attenborough and other mainstays of documentary voiceover. She does tend to emphasize the novelty of her program’s technology to an overly emphatic degree, but it is amazing. And what it reveals is a nighttime crawling with creatures—stalking, fleeing, hunting, and surviving. Or not.

Jammed with enough eerie and compelling cinematography to keep us watching.

Aside from a few orienting establishing shots here and there, many of these episodes commit so fully to this alien approach that it’s a legitimate surprise to be snapped back to reality when more traditional looks at various creatures start to sneak through. ... It scratches the human need to be reminded that there is more left to discover, that there are still some quasi-mystical elements of nature that science has barely had a chance to observe, much less explain.
