Season 5 of New Girl doesn't shake much up overall. It's the same formula that's made you either like or it dislike it over the years. There are a couple of shake ups here and there (Megan Fox guest stars for a few episodes) and Jess is omitted on occasion to build up other stories. What really makes me enjoy this show still is the occasional awesome joke and the development of each character as they get older and their lives start taking shape. By the time the season was over I realized that there's still a lot I want to see happen before New Girl inevitably gets concluded. I can see the show creators keeping things pretty steady for another two seasons - beyond that I'm not sure the show will exist. The biggest criticism is that there's a little too much predictability to the show and, while that's okay most of the time, a few new jokes, style or encounters would go a long way to keeping things fresh. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I first heard that zoey deschanel wasn't going to be in season 5. I was convinced the show was going to the **** and when I heard that Megan fox would be replacing her I was certain it was a rating trap that would blow up in their face. Then when I saw season 4 on Netflix and saw how Schmidt abruptly purposes to Cece, I had given up on New Girl. Fast forward seven months I get a notice from Netflix that the latest season of new girl was added. I forgot Megan fox was in it so I started watching. It started out like the other new girl seasons but then Jess leaves to Jury duty, Cece becomes a main character, then Reagan (Megan Fox' s character) is persuaded to move into the apartment. From that point on it only got better. Without Jess there is time for develop Winston's character rather than whatever quirky antic the writers thought would be funny in that particular episode (I would argue is due to the writers subconscious racism), there is time to explore Schimdtand Cece's relationship, and possibility of Nick and Reagan. New girl without Zoey Deschanel is arguable better than New Girl with Zoey deschanel. Then Zoey Deschanel returns and Megan Fox leaves in one of the smoothest transitions I have ever seen. But the story doesn't return Jess dating life or career because Cece and Schmidt's wedding is the central theme. Some of the story is devoted to Jess but season 5 is more evenly split than past seasons. Winston gets a serious girlfriend. Sam returns. It made me reminiscent of season, when in my opinion the show peaked. Although I liked it because the narrative was around a wedding there are plenty of annoyingly sappy moments and the humor isn't alway there. Season 2 was great, season 3 and 4 each took a step back, but season 5 has New Girl knocking on the door of greatness again. Zoey Deschanel's pregnancy has given this show new life. Expand
